June 2018 WHAT S NEW SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR TEENS AND ADULTS When: June-August 3rd Summertime is reading time! Join other Massena Public Library readers in our Adult/Teen Summer Reading Program. Stop by the Circulation Desk and pick up your Summer Reading Bookmark. Checkout a book, ebook, audiobook, magazines or DVD and you ll earn a sticker for your bookmark. Once your bookmark has six stickers you ll receive a coupon for a free beverage and snack from our Library Coffee Bar. Your completed bookmark will also be entered to win our grand prize which will be drawn on August. 3rd. You can only earn one sticker per check out per day. Complete as many bookmarks as you d like, the more you read, the more chances you have to win! Get ready to rock out this summer with the Libraries Rock Summer Reading program! KNITTING GROUP When: June 5 th, 12 th, 19 th & 26 th Time: 6:30-8:15pm Registration: Not Required Whether you've been knitting for decades or days, join this welcoming group of knitters in the Library's Warren Room. Bring your latest project and join the group as they knit by the library fireplace every Tuesday evening. This is a drop in group, registration is not necessary. SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES Murder on the Orient Express When: Saturday, June 9 th Time: 1:00pm Where: Library Screening Room Join us for an adventure on a historic train! Murder on the Orient Express is a mystery drama directed by Kenneth Branagh, based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. The film stars Branagh as Hercule Poirot, with Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, and Daisy Ridley in supporting roles. The plot follows Poirot, the world-renowned detective, as he seeks to solve a murder on the famous trans-european train in the 1930s. The film received praise for the cast's performances and the production value. SEWING PROJECT SMALL BAGS When: Thursday s June 7 th, 14 th, 21 st & 28 th Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Friday s June 1 st, 8 th, 15 th, 22 nd, & 29 th Time: 10:00am - Noon We are starting our gifts (Christmas gifts) we are making one gift per month from now till January. BEGINNER QUILTING - SQUARE-LAYOUT QUILT When: Tuesday, June 5 th, 12 th, 19 th, & 26 th Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm When: Wednesday, June 6 th, 13 th, 20 th, & 27 th Time: 10:00am - noon Would you like to learn how to quilt? Join local seamstress Cathlene Hartson as she teaches the basics of quilt making. This four session workshop will include demonstrations and hands-on work at Massena Public Library s new quilting lab. You will learn the techniques of quilting and work on your own quilt project. Sessions will include: rotary cutting, machine piecing, sashing, corner stones, borders, batting and backing selections, quilting, binding and labeling. These sessions guarantee to jump start your quilting abilities. SUMMER BAG SALE When: Saturday, June 9 th Time: 10:00 am - 4:00pm Thanks to the generous donations from our patrons, the sale will offer new selections in all areas. Stock up on a great selection of books, $4.00 per bag. OPEN SEWING LAB When: Wednesdays Time: 1:00pm-4:30pm When: Saturdays ( till June 9 th ) Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm Would you like to work on your sewing or quilting project in the Library s sewing lab? We ve established weekly open lab times to allow you to use the Library s sewing machines and equipment. Please register at the circulation desk and sign a waiver before you use the lab. The library's Sewing Lab is equipped with six heavy duty Singer sewing machines, cutting mats, scissors, rotary cutters, irons & ironing boards - but please bring your own machine if you prefer! BOOK CLUB EVENING When: June 26th Time: 6:30pm -8:00pm Our Library Book Club selection for June is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by American author Rebecca Skloot. This 2010 non-fiction book was the 2011 winner of the National Academies Communication Award for best creative work that helps with public understanding of topics in science, engineering or medicine. The book is about Henrietta Lacks and the immortal cell line, known as HeLa, that came from Lacks s cervical cancer cells in 1951. The book is notable for its dealing with ethical issues of race and class in medical research. If you d like to join the book club please contact the library.
SEWING MACHINE MAINTENANCE Date: June 11 th Time: 10:00 am Cost: FREE Would you like to learn how to oil and keep your sewing machine in good working condition? Join Joe Matthews June 11 th @ 10:00am. This service is free ; just bring in your sewing machine and he will show you what to do. LEGO CLUB Date: June 2 nd. Time: 10:00am Children 6 and up are invited to join us for Lego club. The objects you build will be on display at the library. The library will have all the Legos you need so please do not bring your own. HISTORY COMES TO LIFE Date: Saturday, June 2 nd Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 am Cost: FREE event open to the public ( ALL AGES) The Society for Creative Anachronism will be hosting their special talents at the library in an event for all ages. There will be a variety of classes and games to play in addition to a heavy fighting demo. DESIGN YOUR OWN VIKING APRON DRESS OR VIKING SHIELD Date: Saturday, June 2 nd Time: 2:00 am - 3:00pm Cost: FREE event open to the public ( ALL AGES) Kids and Teens are welcome to come in and design their own Viking shield or Viking apron dress. Based on historically accurate recreations. OUTDOOR GAMES FOR CHECKOUT We now have outdoor games available for checkout!! Kan Jam, Ladder Toss, and Corn Hole can be checked out for a week. DELL LCD PROJECTOR FOR CHECKOUT Also available for a 7 day checkout is our Dell LCD Projector, perfect for showing movies or plugging into a lap top or any game console.
