A.2. Definitins/ Terminlgy SEC (2020): Media Literacy Educatin Term Definitin Assessr The persn respnsible t grade the candidates wrk, issue a mark and determine the candidates final grade. Assessment (Cntinuus) A number f tasks given t the candidate during the curse; these culd be an individual task r as grup wrk. Cntrlled Assessment An assessment in the frm, f an examinatin and cnducted within a schl envirnment. The minimum time fr this assessment is 1 hur. Learning Outcme Learning Outcmes are statements, which describe what a qualificatin represents in terms f knwledge, skills and cmpetences. The Malta Qualificatins Framewrk (MQF) defines a learning utcme as what a learner understands and is capable f ding at the end f the learning prcess. Knwledge Knwledge refers t the understanding f basic, factual and theretical infrmatin, which is traditinally assciated with frmal learning but can als be acquired frm infrmal and nn-frmal learning. Skills Skills imply the applicatin f acquired knwledge and understanding in different cntexts. A skill may be the result f frmal learning r f repetitive wrk in an infrmal setting. Cmpetences Each cmpetence is defined as a cmbinatin f knwledge and skills and is assciated with the level f autnmy and respnsibility that the persn is expected t have at that level. Unit Cntent The unit cntent is the cntent required t be cmmunicated and given t the candidate per learning utcme. Each learning utcme must have cntent related t it and this cntent must be delivered t give the candidates the tls t achieve that utcme. Assessment Grading Criteria A descriptin f what a candidate is expected t d in rder t demnstrate that a learning utcme has been achieved. Sample f Wrk The internal r external verifier gathers a representative sample f the candidates wrk t be verified. Quality Assurance T assure the standards and quality f the learning assessment prgramme. Malta Qualificatin Framewrk The Malta Qualificatins Framewrk (MQF) prvides an indicatin f the level f difficulty as a benchmark fr a qualificatin, which needs t be assigned a level, and mapped t the framewrk. The MQF has level descriptrs frm Level 1 t 8. The level descriptrs are useful fr educatin and training prviders as they describe the Knwledge, Skills and Cmpetences and a set f Learning Outcmes, which indicate t the learner the end f a learning prcess. 6 P a g e

Synptic Assessment A Synptic Assessment can be defined as an assessment, which is designed t cver all the assessment grading criteria fr a given unit. 7 P a g e

A.3. Assessment A.3.1. Scpe Assessment is an imprtant element in any learning prcess. In rder t ensure that assessment infrms candidates and at the same time meets imprtant cnditins f reliability, validity and fairness, imprtant rules and prcedures must be adhered t. In particular, the assessment regulatins and prcedures that are explained in this sectin will ensure that assessments are: Of the required standard, quality and level Fair fr all learners Valid and reliable Each unit will be assessed by means f three assignments, ne f which must be an assessment cnducted within a cntrlled schl envirnment. The assessment mde/type, criteria t be assessed and marks distributin are explained in Part B f the prgramme as part f the unit specificatins. A.3.2. Prgramme Grade A cumulative percentage mark, calculated n the basis f a sum ttal f all the 3 units, determines the final grade f candidates/ learners. Candidates/ Learners may qualify fr Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The results f candidates/learners wh d nt btain at least a Grade 7 shall remain unclassified. A.3.3. Imprtant Cnditins Candidates must btain a minimum f 50 marks in each unit in rder t btain a grade classificatin. If a candidate btains a minimum f 50 in tw units, but fails t satisfy the examiner in the remaining unit, s/he may be eligible t btain Grade 6 r Grade 7. If a candidate btains less than 120 marks, his grade will be Unclassified. The same applies if a candidate des nt btain at least 50 marks in tw units by the end f the prgramme. A.3.4. Re-Sits If fr a given unit, the ttal mark gained by a candidate is less than 50 marks, s/he will be eligible t re-sit. The re-sit assessment must cnsist f a synptic assessment cnducted within a schl-cntrlled envirnment during the same academic year. The highest pssible mark that may be btained in this case is 60 marks. Candidates wh btained an average f 50 marks r mre n cmpletin f the three tasks fr a given unit will nt be eligible fr a re-sit t better their riginal mark. Candidates wh miss the cntrlled assessment fr a justifiable reasn will be eligible t sit fr the synptic assessment and may btain full marks. The mark btained in this assessment will replace the cntrlled assessment mark. The cntrlled assessment must nt be mre than 2 hurs lng. 8 P a g e

A.4. Quality Assurance An imprtant aspect f this prgramme is the quality assurance prcess that must be cnducted thrughut the implementatin f the prgramme. Three main prcesses are t be cnducted as stipulated in the table belw. Internal Verificatin f Assessment Briefs All assessment briefs are t be internally verified befre being issued t the candidates. Within this prcess imprtant checks relating t learning utcmes, criteria t be assessed, validated and reliability are t be perfrmed. Internal Verificatin f Assessment Decisins Once learners cmplete their wrk and assessments have been crrected, a representative sample f learners wrk is t be internally verified. External Verificatin The prcess f external verificatin will ensure that prgramme quality and standards criteria are met. Part B: Unit Specificatins B.1. Intrductin This part f the prgramme guide prvides detailed specificatin fr each f the 3 units that are t be implemented fr the successful cmpletin f the prgramme. The curriculum design adpted fr the develpment f the units f study is based n the learning utcmes apprach. The latter can be defined as written statements f what a learner shuld be able t d/knw/apply by the end f the learning prcess. The structure f the unit specificatins is presented belw: 9 P a g e

B.2. Interpreting the Unit Specificatins. Under each grading criterin all the cntent that has t be cvered can be fund. Examples (e.g.), semi-clns and cmmas are used in the Learning and Assessment Prgramme. When semi-clns are used the students shuld be assessed n all the cntent prescribed. Hwever, when the list is headed with example (e.g.), all the cntent is t be cvered but the students are expected t be assessed n mre than 50% f the cntent prescribed fr that grading criterin. In each grading criterin there is a cmmand verb which specifies the level f cntent expected by the student, such as list, identify, utline, describe, explain etc. These verbs are defined by MATSEC in the glssary f verbs available n their website. It is f vital imprtance that the cmmand verbs specified in the grading criteria remain unchanged in the assignment brief. 10 P a g e
