POOL BARRIERS/ENCLOSURES Private pls shall be prtected by a barrier/enclsure t prtect small children. Fencing Fencing shall measure 48 abve the grund n the side f the fence that is utside the pl area. The maximum vertical clearance between the barrier and the grund shall be 2 measured n the side f the barrier facing away frm the pl. Openings in the barrier shall nt allw the passage f a 4 ball. Chain link fences shall have a maximum mesh size f 2 ¼ square. Lattice fencing may be used when the pening frmed by the diagnal members is nt mre than 1 ¾. Gates Access gates shall cmply with all fencing requirements and shall pen utwards frm pl area, be self-clsing and have a self-latching device. When the release mechanism f the self-latching device is lcated lwer than 54 frm the walking surface, the fllwing apply: The release mechanism shall be lcated n the pl side f the gate at least 3 belw the tp f the gate. The gate shall nt have penings greater than 1 ½ within 18 f the release mechanism. Abve Grund Pls The pl walls can be a barrier if they are at least 48 abve the grund. The ladder used fr accessing the pl shall be enclsed by an apprved fence r gate meeting the abve requirements (See Fencing) r the ladder shall be capable f being secured, lcked r remved t prevent access. Drs Drs that frm part f pl enclsure and prvide direct access frm the huse r garage area shall prduce an audible warning when the dr and/r its screen are pen. The alarm shall: Begin immediately after the dr is pened and sund cntinuusly fr 30 secnds; Be capable f being heard thrughut the huse; Autmatically reset; Be equipped with a device that will deactivate the alarm fr nt mre than 15 secnds; and Be lcated at least 54 abve the dr threshld. Ht Tubs/Spas Apprved lckable safety cvers must be prvided and labeled that they have passed the required ASTM F-1346-91 test. 2 P a g e
Typical Fence and Gate Details NOTE D: When the release mechanism E f the self-latching device is lcated lwer than 54 frm the walking surface the gate shall nt have penings greater than 1 ½ within 18 f the release mechanism. The release mechanism shall be lcated n the pl side f the gate at least 3 belw the tp f the gate. ENTRAPMENT PROTECTION FOR SUCTION OUTLETS (FLOOR DRAINS) Accrding t the ANSI/APSP-7(see 2009 Michigan Residential Cde), a listed and apprved unblckable utlet cver may be installed if there is a drain n the bttm f pl OR additinal drains may be installed, at least 3 apart. ELECTRICAL ***** IT IS ILLEGAL FOR ANYONE TO PERFORM ELECTRICAL WORK ON A PERMIT OBTAINED BY ANOTHER PERSON ***** The city references the 2009 Michigan Residential Cde 2009 fr all installatins. STORABLE POOL - WIRING The factry supplied crd-cnnected pl pump mtr fr a strable pl must be plugged int a receptacle that has grund fault circuit interrupter prtectin (GFCI). This crd is usually 25 feet lng. A GFCI receptacle lcated n the exterir r interir f the hme/garage may used t prvide the necessary prtectin. A GFCI breaker installed in the circuit breaker bx can als be used t prvide the necessary prtectin if the receptacle des nt have built-in GFCI prtectin. Any factry supplied light fixture must be plugged int a GFCI receptacle. PERMANENT POOL - WIRING A separate, dedicated circuit frm the breaker r fuse bx must be installed fr the pl pump mtr. This circuit is typically 20 amps but depending n the size f the mtr a 15 amp circuit may be used. Under n circumstances hwever, can the wiring be sized smaller than # 12 AWG. The interir prtin f the wiring fr the pl pump mtr may be run in nnmetallic sheathed cable (Rmex), and must be installed thrugh basement jists, nt belw them. Once utside f the hme, the wiring must be cnverted int three separate individual cnductrs with an insulated grunding wire and are typically black, white and green. Tgether with the wiring frm inside the hme, they are installed int an apprved, weatherprf device r junctin bx munted n the hme. Frm this bx, electrical PVC cnduit is installed t an area n clser than 6 feet t the pl, r t where the pl pump mtr will be installed (smetimes n the side f the hme). The PVC cnduit must be buried t a minimum depth f 18 inches and inspected prir t cvering. The PVC is run t an apprved weatherprf bx and munted n a 4 inch x 4 inch treated pst r galvanized steel. At this pint, the three individual cnductrs are pulled t the bx thrugh the PVC cnduit and a GFCI prtected receptacle and an apprved in-use cver installed. An in-use cver enclses the pl pump crd and receptacle cnnectin and lks like a plastic bubble. 4 P a g e
If the factry supplied crd t the pl pump is f the twist-lcking type, the receptacle bx may be installed 5 feet frm the pl and a twist-lck type receptacle installed with an apprved in-use cver. In additin t the pl pump mtr receptacle, an additinal GFCI prtected cnvenience receptacle is required t be lcated a minimum f 6 feet frm and nt mre than 20 feet frm the inside wall f the pl. An existing GFCI receptacle n the rear r side f the hme, r n the exterir f a detached garage r ther accessry structure may serve as this required receptacle s lng as it is within the 20 ft zne. PERMANENT POOL ABOVE GROUND - BONDING A slid, #8 cpper cnductr must be run frm the pl pump mtr and attach t the pl pump mtr receptacle bx (if it is lcated within 5 feet f the pl), any ladder hlders r pl hand rails that are metal, the pl heater, the pl filter and any wet-niche lighting fixtures. The pl water must be bnded, usually accmplished by a cnnectin made t a bnding lug n the pl filter. The required bnding wire must surrund the circumference f the pl cnnecting at fur equal pints t the metal stanchins f the pl. If the supprting stanchins are nt made f metal, the bnding cnductr will simply surrund the pl but is nt required t be attached t it. The slid, #8 cpper bnding cnductr shall fllw the perimeter f the pl at a distance f 18 t 24 inches frm the inside walls f the pl and buried between 4 and 6 inches belw grade. It nt required that this cnductr be run back t the service panel r cnnect t a driven grund rd either at the hme r the pl. PERMANENT POOL ABOVE GROUND - LIGHTING Lighting fr abve grund pls typically cmes with a factry supplied crd that can plugged int any GFCI receptacle that is at least 6 feet away frm the pl. PERMANENT POOL IN GROUND BONDING & LIGHTING Cntact the electrical inspectr at 586.446.2381. PERMANENT POOL - KEY POINTS All receptacles utlets lcated between 6 and 20 feet (whether new r existing) are required t be GFCI prtected. The crd fr a permanently installed pl pump must nt be lnger than 3 feet. 5 P a g e
Undergrund feeder cable (UF cable) may nt be used t feed the pl pump mtr. Only PVC cnduit that is listed fr use with electrical wiring can be used. Switches and/r switching devices n the prperty shall be lcated at least 5 feet hrizntally frm inside wall f the pl, unless separated frm the pl by a permanent barrier. Undergrund wiring nt assciated with the pl shall be kept a minimum f 5 feet hrizntally frm the inside wall f the pl. HOT TUBS - WIRING Cntact the electrical inspectr at 586.446.2381. 6 P a g e
