CUTTING TIPS If not using a 60-degree triangle ruler, trace the triangle and diamond templates onto template plastic and cut out. If using a 60-degree triangle ruler, place the ruler over the diamond and triangle templates to determine the correct alignment lines. Fussy Cut Diamonds Fussy cut diamonds are cut from 6 1 /2" x WOF strips. The widest part of the diamond will be cut from the center of the strip. Make sure that the desired motif is centered along the length of the strip before cutting. selvage 6 1 /2" desired motifs selvage Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, so that it measures 3 1 /4" x WOF. Align the bottom edge of the Diamond Template for 6 1 /2" strip (or the appropriate guideline on a 60 triangle ruler) with the folded edge, centering the desired motif within the seamlines. Trim along the angled edges of the triangle to cut each diamond. 3 1 /4" Non-fussy Cut Diamonds Non-fussy cut diamonds are cut from x WOF strips. Align the marked edges of the Diamond Template for strip with the long strip edges and trim along the angled edges, or use a rotary ruler to cut -wide segments from the strip as shown below. fold To fussy cut diamonds as shown in our sample quilt, it may be helpful to temporarily mark motif outlines on the template or ruler. Six identical diamonds are needed for each block. 7 6 Align the 60 ruler guideline with one edge of the -wide strip and cut along the ruler's edge. Align the ruler guide with the cut edge, and cut to make the diamond shape. 60 guideline 5 4 3 2 1 2 1 Cutting Triangles Keep template or ruler in same orientation when cutting triangles from directional fabric. Rotate the template or ruler 180 when cutting triangles from non-directional fabric to get more triangles per strip. 5 4 3 1/4" 1/4" Cut directional fabric with template or triangle ruler in same orientation. If cutting triangles using a straight rotary ruler, offset second cut by 1 /4" at triangle tip. Rotate template or triangle ruler 180 when cutting non-directional fabric. If cutting triangles using a straight rotary ruler, offset second cut by 1 /4" at triangle tip. PAGE 3 OF 5
Make the Blocks Note: All seam allowances are 1 /4" unless otherwise specified. Press seam allowances open unless otherwise indicated. Join one diagonally-cut rectangle to each angled edge of the diamond units to create a half-block. Press the seams open. Place one sashing row between each row of blocks. Matching seam lines, join the rows to the sashing strips along adjacent edges. Press the seams toward the sashing rows. Referring to the quilt photo for fabric placement, arrange 6 identical diamonds, 12 matching triangles, and two pairs of diagonally-cut rectangles as shown. Take care to orient fussy cut diamonds and directional triangles around a central point, as shown in the quilt photo. Matching seam lines, join the halfblocks together. Press the seam open. Add the Border Join the outer border strips end to end, using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Cut 2 strips, 2 1 /2" x 68 1 /2", for the side borders, and 2 strips, 2 1 /2" x 65 1 /2" for the top and bottom borders. Join one side border to each side of the quilt center. Press the seams toward the borders. Join the top and bottom inner borders to the quilt center. Press the seams toward the borders. Finishing Remove the selvages from the backing fabric, then cut the yardage into two equal lengths. Join the pieces together along one long edge, using a 1/2" seam allowance. Join one triangle to each outer angled edge of each diamond. Press the seams toward the triangles. Matching seam lines, join three diamond units together along adjacent edges. Press the seams open. Repeat steps 1 5 to make a total of 20 blocks, referring to the quilt photo for fabric combinations and quantities. Assemble the Quilt Center Referring to the quilt photo for block placement, arrange the blocks and short sashing strips in five rows of four blocks and three short sashing strips each. Join the blocks and strips in each row together along adjacent edges. Press the seams toward the strips. Arrange the long sashing strips and corner squares in four rows of four strips and three squares each. Join the strips and squares along adjacent edges to make sashing rows. Press the seams toward the strips. Layer the quilt backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt as desired. Stitch around the perimeter of the quilt, a scant 1/4" from the edge. Trim the excess fabric and batting. Use your favorite method to bind the quilt. PAGE 4 OF 5
