travel environments: project examples

hello from

hello from bwd We are interior architects. We provide a creative consultancy service to help you improved your business premises. We offer our services individually or as a package. We can take your brief from concept and manage it through to on-site implementation. Our strap line bringing spaces to life describes our project approach. We work across all commercial sectors and have a track record for providing creative, practical and commercially viable solutions for all kinds of organisations. This document showcases a selection of our travel related projects, to give you a flavour of how we work. We would welcome the opportunity to meet for a no-obligation ideas consultation and look forward to hearing from you soon. Kind regards, Bev Wood Owner/Creative Director 01253 732 864 all images bwd Limited www.bwd.uk.com

who we are, why we re different Our offer sits between the architect and product designer. The ground between these two disciplines requires an understanding of how people use and interact with spaces. All projects center around the people working in an environment as well as those using it. Designing spaces which work operationally as well as aesthetically require a mix of complementary design skills which we have within our team at bwd. We have many examples of successful projects which fall between architecture and product design and have showcased these throughout our website and within this sector-specific case study. We offer a full end-to-end design service from concept to completion. We have also developed long-standing relationships with other creative professionals as well as contractors and specialist suppliers, with whom we collaborate to enable us to deliver you the best possible results. We believe design consultants tend to be reactive in their response to a client brief, at the expense of maintaining a strategic perspective. This is where bwd is different. We work in partnership with our client to identify all of their requirements and we always explore present and future considerations before we start our design work. Understanding our clients viewpoint, their strategic business direction, and budgetary constraints are very important to us. We don t believe one size fits all that s why we tailor our services and fees to suit individual project requirements. Projects require differing degrees of creative input and we reflect this by adjusting our fees to suit. We have very high internal standards and devote the same attention to every challenge; big or small. all images bwd Limited www.bwd.uk.com

services offered concept generation drawings and specifications We offer a full end-to-end design service from concept generation, which start as loose sketch ideas, through to more detailed drawings. We listen to what our clients say and we fully explore our client s briefs. We use a mix of mediums to generate and communicate our concept ideas from sketches to computer generated modelling and photo-realistic rendering, as the example shown left. In addition to our design role, we help our clients manage the project process. We chair and co-ordinate meetings, and manage other professionals, stakeholders, and supplier inputs. We can produce all details required for manufacture and implementation. Our projects run smoothly because we are good communicators. Our clients feel confident knowing everything is getting sorted leaving them to get on with their day to day role. design development implementation management We have a proven track record of being able to develop ideas to enable contractors and suppliers to accurately price our proposals. We have an experienced team who produce 2D and 3D drawings to communicate the design. The example opposite is a photorealistic visual of the concept design above to accurately demonstrate how the final concept design would look in-situ, prior to investing in the implementation stage. We have taken public and private sector projects from inception to completion and have proven our ability to meet pressing deadlines and budgetary constraints whilst ensuring the approved design is not compromised during implementation. We work effectively as part of a wider project team as well as with contractors, manufacturers and specialist suppliers.

travel environments Liverpool John Lennon Airport

client: Liverpool John Lennon Airport - buses challenge We were invited to deliver the North West Development Agency s (NWDA) programme of tourist-led airport enhancements at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The aim of the project was to provide a welcome and positive first impression, when arriving into Liverpool, during Liverpool s 2008 European Captial of Culture Year. results We developed a visually-led journery through the North West which started once visitors touched down on the runway. Arriving passengers were greeted by colourfully wrapped transfer buses as well as on bus electronic screens running bespoke designed to welcome and statutory information. The original artwork was generated for seven airside buses. Although the artworks were the same (to save cost), the colourways were all different and designed to reflect the airport s carriers e.g orange for Easyjet, blue/red for Ryanair. outcomes As a funded project, the funders required the 08 logo s integrated into the artwork. We suggested separate placement which would enable the airport to remove the logo s at the end of 2008, leaving a lasting legacy of the artwork. all images bwd Limited www.bwd.uk.com

travel environments Liverpool John Lennon Airport

client: Liverpool John Lennon Airport - baggage reclaim challenge As part of the tourist-led airport enhancements at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, we were briefed to look at the baggage reclaim area. The aim was to continue the welcome into this space. results We wrapped the columns, which lined the baggage reclaim hall, with original artwork depicting images of five regional areas in the North West namely, Lake District, Blackpool, Liverpool, Manchester and Chester. Additionally, the base of each column was wrapped in etched stainless steel, depicting place names from the regions, to protect the column bases from trolley damage and to also tie in with the artwork themes. Floor vinyl was included to brand the space. outcomes Beyond the 08 celebrations, the floor vinyl was removed and the project legacy has remained. all images bwd Limited www.bwd.uk.com

travel environments Liverpool John Lennon Airport

client: Liverpool John Lennon Airport - departures challenge We were briefed to look at enhancements in the departure lounges in order to continue the visual journey through to other areas in the airport. results Existing table tops were replaced with new 08 branded ones and existing carpet tiles were lifted to install bespoke printed 08 logos along the routes to/ from the aircraft. The glass screen separating arrivals from departures features more of the regional story and formed a strong visual backdrop to the airside departure lounge outcomes There were over 300 metres of original artwork generated for the glazed corridors. Generating this much original design allowed us to use elements in other areas of the airport to further enhance the space. all images bwd Limited www.bwd.uk.com

travel environments Blackpool Transport Limited

client: Blackpool Transport - travel centre challenge We were invited to design, manage and implement Blackpool Transport s new travel centre on Market Street in Blackpool s town centre. The aim of the refurbishment was to help improve the customer experience and to create a more welcoming and friendly place to visit. results We have designed new counters which feature an interchangeable indicator panel to enable staff to define their position or showcase specific customer messages e.g. Ticket Collection Only. New easily accessible storage has been provided as well as new bespoke merchandise display units and a wall-mounted timetable panel. outcomes The shop has received praise from staff and visitors alike. The new brighter space is encouraging better treatment of staff and previous queue management issues have been alleviated. all images bwd Limited www.bwd.uk.com

travel environments Lancashire County Council

client: Nelson Bus Station - ticket office challenge To create a new ticket office within the new Nelson bus and rail interchange that would reflect the regional Tourist Board brand as well as remove physical barriers between customers and staff. results We have designed a space which offers a more open counter service. Previously tickets had been issued behind a glass barrier. The counters offer staff a better face-to-face customer experience with the added benefit of having a built-in security system, should the staff feel threatened in any way. outcomes The wall space is maximised with bespoke designed literature display panels and regional branded messages are presented consistently around the ticket office. The door panel features a vinyl to reflect a sense of place and customers can access the office via generous automated doors. all images bwd Limited www.bwd.uk.com
