Mirrors Lenses Prisms Windows Intro Beamsplitters Optical Filters Specifications Following is a short review of filter specifications to assist you in formulating requirements for your particular application. CVI maintains a qualified staff of applications engineers to assist you in selecting the best product available at the minimum cost. Center Wavelength Center Wavelength (CWL) is the arithmetic mean of the pass band expressed in nanometers. For instance, a HeNe laser filter would have a center wavelength of 632.8nm. Center wavelength tolerance: dependent variable determined by your requirements for center wavelength, full width at half maximum, transmittance, and blocking. A CVI applications engineer will be happy to help you with any questions. Out-of-Band Rejection Out-of-Band Rejection (Blocking) is the amount of energy, outside the filter pass band, transmitted through the filter. It is often expressed as an absolute level, such as 10-4, meaning there are no transmission peaks outside the pass band exceeding 0.0001 T or 0.01% T. Values are specified in units of Optical Density (O.D.). 1 Optical Density (O.D.) = Log T 10 where T= transmission. The rejection range in nanometers must accompany this specification. Filter Dimensions Filter dimensions are specified in inches or millimeters, along with tolerances. Standard sizes are 0.50" Ø, 1.00" Ø, and 2.00" Ø. Standard interference filters are mounted in a black anodized aluminum ring to provide a higher quality filter. The Polarizers Waveplates Filters Etalons Ultrafast Interferometer Appendix Mounts ± 20% of FWHM Percent Transmission Percent Transmission is the amount of power received by the detector compared to the total power available. The traditional formula is %T = I/I o x (100), where I o is the incident power and I is the transmitted power. Bandpass Bandpass is the width of the pass band, measured in nanometers, at the halfpower points of the pass band. It is often expressed as Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM). Tolerance: ± 20% of FWHM Bandpass Shape Bandpass shapes can vary from triangular to nearly square. The number of cavities in a filter describes the overall spectral shape. The more cavities the filter has, the more square the band shape. Typical shapes for a one cavity, two cavity, three cavity, and five cavity filters are shown in Figure 1. Typical Band Pass Shape of a One Cavity filter. Figure 2. Typical Band Pass Shape of a Two Cavity filter. Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4. Please note that for custom filters, the number of cavities is a Figure 3. Typical Band Pass Shape of a Three Cavity filter. Figure 4. Optical Filters Intro Specifications thickness for these standard ring mounted filters is 0.25 inches. Custom sizes and thicknesses are available, please contact a CVI sales engineer for more information. Variation of Wavelength with Incident Angle CVI s standard interference filters are designed for use at normal incidence in collimated light. Certain characteristics of thin film interference filters change with incidence angle. Center wavelength, the most important parameter of a filter, varies approximately as a cosine function, shifting towards shorter wavelengths with increasing angle. The following equation may be used to determine the wavelength at a certain angle of incidence: λ = λ o 1 ( where n o n eff λ = Wavelength at Angle of Incidence λ o = Wavelength at Normal Incidence φ = Angle of Incidence ) 2 sin 2 φ n o = Refractive of External Medium n eff =Effective Refractive of Filter Number of Cavities by CWL CWL HBW Number Range (FWHM) of (nm) (nm) Cavities 193-326 -- na 330-396.1 10.0 3 400-1064 1.5 1 400-1064 3.0 2 400-1064 10.0 3 400-1064 25.0 5 400-1064 40.0 5 400-1064 70.0 5 1070-2500 10.0 2 1070-2500 12.0 2 > 2500 -- na Environmental Considerations Filters are sensitive to changes in environment, with temperature and humidity being the most critical factors. CVI interference filters are designed for operation at 23 degrees Celsius. These filters can be used throughout the temperature range of -50 to +100 degrees Celsius as long as thermal shock is avoided. (Thermal shock can be avoided if the change in filter temperature is less than five degrees Celsius per minute.) Temperature change causes the center wavelength to shift approximately 0.02nm per degree Celsius. See Figure 5. λ Figure 5. Temperature Coefficient vs. Center Wavelength. Long-term exposure to extreme humidity may cause filter deterioration. A CVI applications engineer can provide additional information on this subject. Environmental Specifications Humidity: MIL-STD-810F, Method 507, Procedure 1 Abrasion: MIL-C-48497, Para. 3.4.3.1 20 eraser rub Adhesion: MIL-C-48497, Para. 3.4.1.1 tape test Cleanability: MIL-C-48497, Para. 3.4.2.2 solvents Surface Quality: 80-50 scratch-dig Custom filters can be manufactured to withstand more than 20 cycles of MIL-STD-810C. Cosmetics CVI strives to give all of its products a pleasing appearance. However, total elimination of pinholes, inclusions, microscopic scratches, and other imperfections would dramatically increase filter costs. Careful attention is given to ensuring that these minor defects do not affect filter performance. Packaging CVI filter products are packaged to promote optimum shelf life. Unless the customer makes special arrangements, filter products will be delivered in our standard packaging. Filters are packaged in a protective envelope which is impervious to moisture. This envelope is then purged with nitrogen and heat sealed which minimizes environmental damage. Cleaning Method Optical filters are fragile and must be handled with care. CVI s filter products are cleaned and inspected for quality assurance before they are shipped to the customer. These products should be handled by the edges to avoid any damage to the optical surfaces. When cleaning becomes necessary, please follow the recommended cleaning method below: Fold a lens tissue to a size just larger that the optic being cleaned. Spray the folded edge of the tissue with isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe the surface of the filter with a straight sweeping motion. Do not reuse a contaminated tissue as damage to the optical surface may occur. Repeat the process if necessary. Custom and Image Quality Filters Capabilities Intro Custom Filters When it comes to optical filters, no job is too big or too small for CVI s Optical Filter group. We offer a wide range of center wavelengths and bandwidths. Optical filters can be designed with custom blocking if required. If your application calls for special shapes, sizes, or a special mount, CVI s Optical Filter group is waiting to help. We have a complete manufacturing facility that allows us to create a wide range of options. Put our 30 years of experience to the test. Please contact our helpful applications engineers for assistance. Image Quality When your application requires an improved image, CVI can accommodate your needs. We begin the process with our high quality, optically flat substrates. These are then coated and assembled using highly specialized techniques that produce a filter of higher optical quality.
