Use these same instructions to make 4-12 ½ Large Variable Star Blocks and 30-6 ½ Small Variable Star Blocks. 2. Take 4 Blue 3 ½ (2 ) A squares, 4 Blue 7 ¼ (4 ¼ )B triangles, 8 yellow 3 7/8 (2 3/8 ) C triangles and 1 gold 6 ½ (3 ½ ) D square. Lay out the block design.
3. Sew a yellow C triangle to opposite sides of the blue B triangle to make a flying geese unit, make four. 4. Sew a blue A square to opposite sides of the flying geese unit, make two. This makes your top and bottom row. 5. Sew a flying geese unit to opposite sides of the yellow D square, this makes your center row. 6. Now sew a top and bottom row to opposite sides of the center row. This makes one complete Variable Star. 7. Repeat to make a total of 4 Large Variable Star Blocks and 30 Small Variable Stars Blocks, four of the small will be used for the border corners and the remaining 26 small will be used to make the Double Star Blocks. Double Star Block: 1. Take 2 completed Variable Star Blocks, 2 red C triangles, and 2 white C triangles. Lay out the block design. 2. Sew a white C triangle to a red C triangle, make 2 half square triangle blocks. 3. Sew a half square triangle block to a Variable Star Block for the top row and repeat for the bottom row (watch the direction of the triangles). 4. Sew the top row to the bottom row. This completes one Double Star Block. 5. Repeat to make a total of 13 Double Star Blocks. Pinwheel Block: 1. Take four red C triangles and 4 white C triangles. Lay out the block design. 2. Sew a white C triangle to a red C triangle, make 4 half square triangle blocks. 3. Sew two half square triangle blocks together to make half the block, make two halves (watch the direction of the triangles). 4. Sew the two halves together. This completes one Pinwheel Block. 5. Repeat to make a total of 6 Pinwheel Blocks.
Assembling Quilt Center: 1. Layout your two solid red squares, four large Variable Star Blocks, 13 Double Star Blocks, and 6 Pinwheel Blocks according to the Sewing and Cutting Layout shown. Take care to place the blocks in the correct position and direction to achieve the final design. 2. Mark each row with Row #1, Row #2, etc. Sew your blocks in rows, and then sew the rows together. The bottom row will only have four blocks. 3. Press your quilt with starch, especially along the cutting line, to prepare it for cutting. 4. With a pencil and ruler mark the cutting lines (Optional: Apply the Cutting Guide Tape along both sides of the cutting lines and use the Arrow Guide Tape for your arrows). Label the sections with arrows as shown. 5. Carefully cut the top into 3 sections on the marked lines. Be sure to cut the Cut First line first. Cut First Sewing & Cutting Layout Reassemble Diagram
6. Lay out the sections as shown in the Reassemble Diagram with the arrows pointing down. 7. Sew the sections together and press. 8. Trim the excess fabric in the corners with a square-up ruler to complete the quilt top. Quilt Borders: 1. Measure your quilt from top to bottom and side to side (measure through the center for an accurate measurement) and trim the border strips to size. Sew the border strips to the side edges of the quilt, matching the center and ends of the borders to the center and ends of the quilt top. Press seams towards the border. Now add the small Variable Star Blocks to each end of the remaining border strips. Press seams away from the corner squares. Sew these borders to the top and bottom edges of the quilt, again matching the center and ends of the borders to the center and ends of the quilt top. Press seams toward the border. Finishing: 1. Layer the backing, the batting, and the quilt top. Baste the layers together and hand or machine quilt as desired. 2. Use diagonal seams to sew the 2 ½ wide binding strips to make one long strip. 3. Sew the binding to the edges of the quilt. 4. Trim the extra batting and backing even with the edges of the quilt. Turn the binding over the edge to the back and hand or machine sew in place. Enjoy your quilt! 2013 Sandi Blackwell, Stitched Buy, Square-agonals
