The QSX Newsletter Dec, 2009 Issue 12 Contact information: President Mark Gershen, KF6YAN 818 2412212 VP Larry Cohen, AD6IZ Secretary Leah Shirokoff, KE6MMU Treasurer Christine Olliff, KF6OPU Repeater Dave Bellinger, KO6TD Trustee Larry Cohen, AD6IZ Trustee Mark West, W6MW Editor Mark Kanzler, KE6ZRP 8182421742 Mail: CVARC, P.O. Box 854, La Canada, Ca 91011 Presidents message: PREZ SEZ 2009 shot by. Time to look forward and backward to assess another unique year for the CVRC. Past: Fire Service Day debuted our club brochure, but to be honest, there were few takers. Nonetheless FSD was an excellent City event and it s worth putting the first Saturday in May on your mustdo calendar. Future: Armed with ham address listings by local zip codes, we will be able to outreach to new hams, beginning in the New Year, as a step in building up our membership. Past: With more than 30 very active participants, we were able to pull off a very decent Field Day in spite of 100degree heat, lack of band openings and the usual complicated logistics. Our community exposure was increased although not as much as we d have liked despite great press engineered by TAV. Future: If plans work out to

hold FD in Verdugo Park, we will improve our community presence and be able to overnight in an improved climate. There are also a lot of trees: Shade! Multiple Wire Antennas! Easy food access! Maybe even a few sunspots wouldn t that be cool! Past: Cruise Night, Montrose Parade, various other GEARS events, and a joint CVRCGEARS FD. Future: Ditto. Past: The 3 rd Annual Mark & Tim, ZRP/POI August picnic continued its successful run with generous burgers and trimmings. Future: We ll have to stay tuned for next year to experience whatever it is that the hosts will add to the burger formula, evidently a constantlyevolving work inprogress. Past: Longterm absence of Mark W6MW. The exciting absence of Erik KO6OL at the South Pole. Future: The presence of MW. And the anticipated great presentation of the South Pole experience. Past: Steadyatthehelm Sunday Net Control by Ed, KD6TAV. Steady input of brownies by Leah, KE6MMU. Great email newsletter and Trans Pond(er) net by Mark, KE6ZRP. Special Projects by Dale and Larry. Hopeful Future: Steadyatthehelm Sunday Net Control by Ed, KD6TAV. Steady input of brownies by Leah, KE6MMU. Great email newsletter and TransPond(er) net by Mark, KE6ZRP. Special Projects by Dale and Larry. Past: Ham and Conrad s turkey holiday dinner in the dreary Red Cross building. Future: Ham and neoconrad s turkey holiday dinner in Montrose church social hall. Thanks to Dale and Christine, Flo, Dave and Jerry. Also Eric, K6EJC and HRO; we ll have five substantial gift certificates this year! Past: Elections in the new year, leading to gavel turnover in May. Future: Politicking NOW, nominations at January meeting, elections AND gavel turnover in FEBRUARY. More time to plan FD without Board changes. Past: Challenge from State Board of Equalization to update our taxexempt status. Likely Future: Continuation of our status. Past: Nobody could locate the bylaws or corporate papers. Future: Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, they ve been unearthed. [Now we should probably read them, although that would be upsetting tradition.] Thanks, Christine. Past: $12.93 in petty cash fund. Likely Future: $12.93 in petty cash fund. Past: Unwavering intra and extraboard support for club events: Larry & Flo, Jim & Christine, Mark, Mark & Chris, Dave, David, Don, Elliott, Leah, Walt & Fran,, Mike, Joni & Frank, Dick, Ray & Barb, George, Marsh, Matt, Frosty, Shig, Emile, Jerry, Bob, Tim, Ellie, Steve, Steve, Gene & Charlene, Joe, John, John, Lennie, Barry, Hermann & Betty, and everyone unintentionally left out. Hopeful Future: Ditto. Present: Sincere thanks from Mark, KF6YAN. Let s make 2010 even better. 73

Christmas Party News: Well, it is almost time for the annual Christmas get together. Dec. 10, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of La Crescenta. 4441 La Crescenta Ave, La Crescenta Ca. Doors open at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship hall, and dinner will begin at 6:30. Hopefully everyone got the announcement from our president Mark, KF6YAN and the pdf file showing the church and the address, along with a map and directions. If you missed it, it is on our club s website, www.qsl.net/cvrc Please plan on attending if you can, it is a really fun event with lots of food, fun and items that have been collected this past year for the silent auction. If you need help getting to the party, give Mark a call 818 2412212 and ask him if arrangements can be made. This year we are hoping that having the party in La Crescent will bring out faces that we might not see normally. Don t miss it! Transponder net news: After the Club s monthly meeting this past Saturday, we tried to hold the transponder net with our sister club in Surrey England. Unfortunately, we were unable to make the Echolink connection, so the net could not take place. It was our hope to wish all of our friends in England a very Merry Christmas. Hopefully we will be able to make the connection next month, January 2010. Something of interest: As many of us know, Leah s son Eric KO6OL just recently spent several months doing research at the south pole. While he was there, they made contact several times via HF radio. Here is a picture of the front and the back of a QSL card that he sent her from there.

Something of interest: Special Event Station During Climate Conference in Copenhagen: During COP15 in Copenhagen, Denmark from Dec 7th to 18th a special event station will be manned by OZ5BAL, the local ham radio club of Ballerup in NWCopenhagen. The station will run off 'cleaner' energy sources ie. solar and wind power to show some alternatives to the normal grid as in spirit of the climate summit. More info at http://www.5p15cop.dk
