Christmas Tree Pillow By Marie Duncan Christmas is coming and you want to be ready! This fun piped, patchwork pillow made with the Hex N More Ruler will go together quickly and be a treasured holiday decoration for years to come. Sewing Supplies: Interchangeable Dual Feed 920219096 Changeable ¼ Guide Foot 413238345 Clear ¼ Piecing Foot w/guide 412927445 Clear Piping Foot 413097145 INSPIRA topstitch needle, size 90 620099096 INSPIRA Tear-A-Way stabilizer 620112196 INSPIRA In-R-Form batting alternative 36" x 58" 620131596 Hex N More Ruler JBQ201 Piping Hot Binding Tool 140000971 White Fusible Fleece 320003996 ⅛ yard each of 4-6 different green print cottons ⅛ yard of red print 1 yard tone on tone white cotton for background and pillow back ¼ yard green striped cotton for piping 4 yards piping cord Sewing thread Sulky 30 wt. Blendable Thread Bobbin thread Fiberfill Cut: From each of the green print cottons: One strip 3½ long x width of fabric Sub cut the strips into 3½ triangles using the Hex N More ruler. You need 16 green triangles and 1 red triangle (cut from scrap). For best results, cut off each of the three points using the end of the ruler. This makes for easy and accurate piecing, and corners that match! Page 1 of 5

From white print: Place fabric right sides together and cut two from side template (a left and a right) Cut two from bottom piece template (a left and a right) Two strips 3 long x width of fabric for borders One rectangle 16 x 18½ for pillow back From green and white stripe: 3 strips 1½ long x width of fabric From fusible fleece: One rectangle 16 x 18½ Sew: 1. Thread with cotton sewing thread top and bobbin. 2. Snap on your Clear ¼ Piecing Foot w/guide. 3. Select center needle position straight stitch. 4. Sew the triangles into rows as shown pressing the seams to one side as you go. 5. Sew the rows into a tree! 6. Place one of the side pieces right sides together with one tree edge. 7. Stitch in place. 8. Repeat with the other side piece. 9. Place one of the bottom pieces right sides together with the red triangle. 10. Stitch in place. 11. Repeat with the other bottom piece on the other side of the red triangle. 12. Stitch the bottom strip to the bottom of the tree. 13. Insert a size 90 topstitch needle. 14. Thread with 30 wt. Sulky Blendable thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Create the Decorative Stitch Border: The border uses one of the Omnimotion stitches. We chose to create it in Embroidery mode, using Shaping. You could just pick a decorative feather type stitch and stitch it in sewing mode as well. Page 2 of 5

1. Toggle to Embroidery Mode. 2. Select. 3. Select the Stitch Menu. 4. Select the K menu. 5. Touch Delete to remove the last Fix stitch. You should now have only one Fix stitch showing which will be at the beginning of the design. 6. Arrow to the right to the K2 menu and select K2:33. 7. Touch to close the stitch selection screen. 8. Touch Design Shaping. 9. Select line. 10. Select Rotate. 11. Touch the control Center icon to rotate 90. 12. Touch Scale and drag the square boxes to just inside the hoop, top and bottom. 13. Increase the number of designs to 31. 14. Touch to close the shaping screen. 15. Hoop Tear-A-Way stabililzer in your 360 x 200 hoop. Attach hoop to embroidery arm. 16. Touch Go to move to embroidery stitch-out mode. 17. Touch to cancel the color stops. 18. Insert a size 90 topstitch needle. 19. Thread with 30 wt. Blendable thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Page 3 of 5

20. Place the first strip on the stabilizer. Touch Baste and baste the strip in place. 21. Stitch the first repeat of the design beginning at the end of the strip. 22. When you are ready to stitch the next repeat, lower the needle into the end of the previous branch as shown. Pin the fabric to the stabilizer and raise the needle. 23. Touch Baste and baste the strip in place. 24. Repeat embroidering the design as many times as neccesary to fill both strips. 25. Trim the strips to 2 wide with the embroidery centered. Finish the Pillow: 1. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin. 2. Sew the piping strips end to end to form one long strip. 3. Wrap the fabric around the cording. 4. Snap on your Piping Foot. 5. Stitch to create the piping. 6. Using your Piping Hot Binding Tool, trim the seam allowance of the piping to ¼. 7. Stitch piping along the top and bottom edge of the pillow. 8. Place one of the stitched strips over the stitched piping along the top edge. 9. With the groove of the foot following over the piping cord, stitch the strip in place. 10. Trim off the excess. 11. Stitch the leftover piece along the bottom edge as shown. 12. Stitch piping to each edge. Page 4 of 5

13. Stitch the remaining border strips to each side of the pillow as shown. 14. Stitch piping all the way around the outside of the pillow stopping at each corner. Cut the piping and start back up. 15. Attach your Interchangeable Dual Feed. Snap on your Changeable ¼ Guide Foot. 16. Place fusible fleece on the wrong side and press to fuse in place. 17. Thread with 30 wt. cotton on top and sewing thread in the bobbin. 18. Stitch ¼ from each seam, quilting the tree. 19. Because we wanted a rather flat profile to our pillow, we made a pillow form using INSPIRA In-R-Form batting alternative. 20. Cut two pieces of INSPIRA In-R-Form batting alternative 15 x 17½. 21. Place wrong sides together. 22. Snap on your Changeable Zig Zag foot. 23. Select stitch A1:11. 24. Stitch around the pillow form leaving a 5 opening for stuffing. 25. We won t turn the form, just stuff it lightly with fiberfill. When finished, zigzag the opening closed. 26. Place pillow back right sides together with the pillow front. 27. Remove the Interchangeable Dual Feed and replace your ankle. 28. Snap on your Piping Foot. 29. Select straight stitch. 30. Sew around the pillow leaving a 9 opening along the bottom to insert the pillow form. 31. Clip the corners, turn and press. 32. Insert the pillow form. 33. Sew the opening closed. Page 5 of 5
