SECTION 10425 PART ONE GENERAL 1.1 SECTION INCLUDES A. Interior Building Signage. B. Handicapped parking signs. C. Permanent Project Sign. 1.2 DESCRIPTION A. Signage shall consist of room number and room function to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ANSI A117.1 2003 and UFAS - 1988. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Submit manufacturer's technical data and installation for each type of sign required. B. Submit shop drawings listing sign size, letterform and letter heights. C. Submit one full size sample sign of type, style and color specified, including method of attachment. If approved, the sample will become part of the job. D. Submit Manufacturers descriptive literature and specifications, including color samples for selection by the Architect. Physical samples only will be accepted. E. Submit manufacturer's installation instructions. Include installation template and hardware. 1.4 PRODUCT HANDLING A. Deliver and store products to site under provisions of Section 01640 ʻProduct Handlingʼ. 1.5 VOC REGULATIONS A. All coatings must be Ozone Transport Commission (OTC) compliant for VOC Regulations. B. All Paints, primers sealers and adhesives shall comply with Green Seal (GS-36) for commercial adhesive and (GS-11) for architectural coatings. 10425-1
PART TWO PRODUCTS 2.1 INTERIOR BUILDING GRAPHIC PROCESS A. Tactile characters shall be raised the required 1/32" above sign face. Glue-on letters or etched backgrounds are not acceptable. B. All letters, numbers and/or symbols shall contrast with their background, either light characters on a dark background or dark characters on a light background. Characters and background shall have a non-glare finish. C. All tactile characters shall be accompanied by Grade 2 Braille. Braille dots shall have a domed or rounded shape. Braille shall be located beneath entire text and shall be separated 1 2" from the corresponding raised characters or symbols. Grade 2 Braille translations to be provided by signage manufacturer. D. Plaque material shall be a 1/8" thick laminate with a melamine resin surface and a phenolic resin core which provides resistance to abrasion, stains, alcohol, solvents, boiling water, and heat. The material shall be NEMA rated and have flammability and smoke values that meet the standards for flammability of interior materials. E. Background color as selected by architect from manufacturer's actual color samples. F. Letterform shall be Gill Sans upper case letters and numbers G. Size of letters and numbers shall be as follows: 1. Room numbers shall be 1 ". 2. Lettering for room ID signs shall be 5/8" or as noted. 3. Symbol size shall be 4". 4. Standard Grade 2 Braille shall be 1 2" below copy. 5. Corners: 1 2" radius 6. Copy position: CC (centered/centered) or as indicated on drawings. 2.2 HANDICAPPED PARKING SIGN 10425-2
A. Signs shall be.063" thick aluminum with radius corners. Blue/White silk-screened baked enamel finish. 12 inch by 18 inch reflective screened heavy gauge steel. All signs shall have a white background. Signs shall have the words Reserved Parking in capital letters above the Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol). In addition, van accessible parking space signs shall have the words Van Accessible in capital letters below the Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol). On all signs, the Symbol of Access or wheelchair symbol shall be white on a square blue background. B. Provide one for each handicapped space as indicated on the site plans. C. Mounting: 2 square painted steel posts, capped. 2.3 EXTERIOR BUILDING DESIGN A. Permanent Project sign shall be routed polymer casting, painted, per the concept sketch on the drawings. Signmaker shall confirm sign construction, detail, mounting, etc. PART THREE EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Verify surfaces are ready to receive work. Beginning of installation means installer accepts existing surfaces. 3.2 INTERIOR BUILDING INSTALLATION A. Install signs after surfaces are finished, in locations as indicated on the Drawings. B. Signs shall be mounted using vinyl tape and silastic adhesive. Mechanical mounting shall be used for In Case of Fire Do Not Use Elevator sign. C. All signs shall be mounted 60" from the finished floor to the center of the sign on the latch side of the door. The distance between the doorframe and sign should be 2". D. When the tactile sign is provided at double doors with one active leaf, the sign shall be located on the inactive leaf. If the door is glass, a blank sign of the same size shall be installed on the other side of the glass to conceal the adhesive. E. When the tactile sign is provided at double doors with two active leaves, the sign shall be to the right of the right hand door. 10425-3
F. Where there is no wall space on the latch side of a single door, or to the right side of double doors, signs shall be on the nearest adjacent wall. G. Signs containing tactile characters shall be located so that a clear floor area 18 x 18, centered on the tactile characters, is provided beyond he arc of any door swing between the closed position and the 45 open position H. Where there other conditions, consult with the Architect as to its alternate location. Installer assumes responsibility for suitable installation of the signs. 3.3 HANDICAPPED PARKING SIGN INSTALLATION A. Signs shall be securely mounted to steel posts with the bottom edge of the sign a minimum of 5ʼ-0 above ground level per ANSI A117.1. The signs shall be installed perpendicular to the driveway plane. 1. Review all locations of Symbol of Access Signs with the Ownerʼs Representative before placement. Posts for Symbol of Access signs shall be finished with two coats of paint. 2. Posts shall be 2 steel square posts, capped, in length required for mounting signs at ANSI minimum height. Set posts a minimum of 3ʼ below grade in concrete as per drawing detail and 2ʼ-0 from face of curb or edge of pavement, where able, to avoid post damage from automobiles. Post shall be break away. 3. Where posts are to be set in new concrete walks or curbs, place sleeve into concrete walk or curb for post to fit firmly into it. Keep sign out of flow of walkways or main routes. Do not install/allow signs to project into adjacent walking space. 4. Where posts are placed in planted or lawn areas, set posts firmly in a concrete footing 8 inches square and extending 2 feet below finish grade. Top of footing shall be even with finish grade. 5. Signs shall be secured to posts with two carriage bolts (3/8 inch hot dipped galvanized steel carriage bolts) at the top; and bottom of the sign, placed in such a manner as not to obscure the Symbol of Access and lettering. Strip mount bolt threads behind fastening nuts to make vandal proof. Top of signs shall be even with top of posts. 6. Sign height shall be high enough that the sign is not obstructed by the parked vehicles. 10425-4
7. After installation, clean soiled signs surface according to manufacturer's instructions. Protect from damage until acceptance. 3.4 PERMANENT PROJECT, DIRECTIONAL SIGNS INSTALLATION A. Signs shall be securely mounted with non-corrosive fasteners as shown on plan, or if not otherwise shown, on 4 x 4 treated posts with vinyl column covers. Posts shall be anchored to concrete footings. 3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. After installation, clean soiled signs surface according to manufacturer's instructions. Protect from damage until acceptance. END OF SECTION 10425-5
