Jinny Beyer s Medallion Table Runner is a fast and fun project suitable for quilters of all skill levels. The pattern steps you through creating the intricate-looking but easy-to-make center square. Here s the secret: it s just four identical triangles! Five beautifully shaded fabrics make up the braided stripes. There s no tricky piecing or odd angles it s all straight seam sewing. Plus, with the quilt-as-you-go method, once your project is sewn, it's almost complete! All seam allowances are ¼-inch. WOF = Width of Fabric based on 40 useable inches. Read the entire pattern before beginning. Getting Started This charming project can be made with any Jinny Beyer border print, plus five coordinating fabrics. Your border print may not match the images in the pattern, but the process is the same. For best effect, lay out the fabrics so that Fabric 1 is the darkest and Fabric 5 is the lightest. Step 1: Make Templates & Cut Fabrics 1-5 Using the pattern on page 4 and semi-transparent template plastic, make Template C: with a permanent marker, trace the solid cutting and dotted sewing lines, grain line arrow and mirror line onto the plastic. Cut it out on the solid lines. Templates A and B are optional; these pieces can be cut easily using just a rotary cutter and ruler. Binding. One fabric measures ¾ yard; reserve ½ yard for the binding. Fabric 1: Cut three strips measuring 2" x WOF. From each of two of the strips: cut one measuring 8¾" or using Template A cut three measuring 10¾" or using Template B From the remaining strip, cut four pieces measuring 8¾" or using Template A. Yields six A and six B pieces. Fabrics 2-5: One of these fabrics measures one yard and is also used for the backing. From this fabric, cut two pieces measuring 15" x WOF and set aside for the backing. The remaining fabric is used for the braids. From each of the four fabrics, cut two strips measuring 2" x WOF. From each strip, cut two pieces measuring 8¾" (or using Template A) and two measuring 10¾" (or using Template B.) Step 2: Working with Fabric 6 (Border Print) The border print fabric has at least four wide and four narrow stripes running the length of the fabric. Between the wide and narrow stripes is an area of fabric at least ½" wide that is used for seam allowance. This section is usually a solid or semi-solid color, but sometimes Jinny adds a design to this area to provide extra design possibilities. (See Diagram 1.) Wide Seam Allowance Narrow Narrow Seam Allowance Wide Diagram 1. All Jinny Beyer border print fabric have at least ½" of fabric for seam allowance between the wide and narrow stripes. Using Template C and following the Note on Cutting Border Print Patches below, mark and cut four identical triangles from the wide border print stripes. The last braids on the table runner are cut from the narrow stripes of this fabric; be sure to include ¼-inch of seam allowance fabric on both long sides of the strips. Note on Cutting Border Print Patches When placing templates on border print fabric, center the template on a mirror-image motif and align the dotted sewing line beneath the arrow just below a printed line on the border print fabric. This will create pleasing symmetry and a defining edge when the patch is sewn. To help you cut multiple identical patches, draw a portion of the design motif from the fabric onto the template. Mark around the template, then shift it to find the drawn motif elsewhere on the fabric for the next patch. For more information and a video introduction to working with border print fabrics, visit www.jinnybeyer.com/bordertips Designed by Jinny Beyer 2012, 2016 Jinny Beyer Page 1

Note that these pieces are not the same width as the rest of the braids; their width is determined by the width of the narrow fabric stripe plus ¼-inch of seam allowance on both sides. From the narrow stripes, cut two pieces measuring 8¾" and two measuring 12½" long. (The last strips need to be cut longer to account for the greater width of the border print strips. The excess will be trimmed in Step 5.) Step 3: Make Center Square To make the center square, pin then sew two Fabric 6 triangles together, carefully matching the fabric designs. Repeat to make two pairs. Sew the pairs together in the same fashion. (The square will measure 8½" including seam allowance.) Note that the pieces are slightly oversized and will extend beyond the edges of the center square. Do not trim them at this time. As in Diagram 4, sew two sets of Fabrics 1-5, in order, to each side of the square. Finish the table runner with a set of Fabric 1 pieces on both sides, then a set of Fabric 6 pieces on both sides. Diagram 3. Diagram 4. Sew the strips in order as shown here, to both sides of the center square. Diagram 2. Step 4: Prepare the Backing & Batting Sew the two large pieces of backing fabric together to make one piece measuring approximately 15" x 80". Trim to approximately 72" in length. Cut one piece of batting measuring 15" x 72". Fold the batting in half to find the horizontal and vertical center lines. Mark these lines on the batting. Lay the backing right side down and place the batting on top, marked side up. Baste the two layers together with pins or a fusible basting spray. 6A 1 5 4 3 2 1 5 4 3 2 6B Step 5: Make the Table Runner Notes: Be sure to remove the basting pins as you sew the fabrics to the batting/backing so they are not caught under the top fabric! After sewing each piece, flip it right side up and press. Pin the center square to the center of the batting, aligning the seams with the marked lines on the batting as in Diagram 3. Sew a Fabric piece to the center square. Flip the strip right side up and press. Sew the Fabric piece to the unit, aligning the raw edges at the top and side. Flip the strip and press. Repeat on the other side of the square. Designed by Jinny Beyer 2012, 2016 Jinny Beyer Page 2

Step 5: Finish the Table Runner Quilt the center square as desired. Jinny suggests outlinequilting some of the fabric design. Mark a trim line along the two long sides of the table runner, aligning the points of the center medallion with the ¼" line on your ruler (see Diagram 5.) This leaves a ¼" seam allowance for your binding and preserves the corners of the center square. Trim along the marked lines through all the layers. Next, trim the backing/batting even with the 6A and 6B strips on both ends. (The strips include the seam allowance so an additional ¼" does not need to be added.) Make binding strips your preferred width (up to 2½" wide) from the reserved fabric and bind using your favorite method. 6A 6B For tips on binding, including the odd angles of the table runner, visit: www.jinnybeyer.com/promos/binding ¼" Diagram 5. Trim the long sides of the table runner -- through all layers -- ¼-inch beyond the points of the center square. That gives you a ¼- inch seam allowance so that you retain sharp points on the center square. 6A 6B Designed by Jinny Beyer 2012, 2016 Jinny Beyer Page 3

Template B Extension Line Template B Template B is too large to fit on this page. Make a copy of Template A and tape the partial Template B (left) to the copy, matching the Extension Lines. The template will measure 10¾". Template B Extension Line Mirror Line Template C Template A Template Size Check This box should measure 2 inches square. If the box does not measure 2", your templates/foundations will not be the correct size. If you are printing at home, be sure your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling.
