Capuche Pattern Copyright 2001, SpiralScoutsTM International and the Aquarian Tabernacle Church All rights reserved worldwide. Pattern by Justine Goodwin and Pete Pathfinder Davis This packet contains 12 letter sized pages of pattern sheets to be assembled, plus instructions. When properly assembled, these pages will make a complete sewing pattern from which you may cut out and assemble the official SpiralScoutsTM Capuche, or hooded bib. This is the part of the official SpiralScoutsTM uniform on which members may display their awards, honors, and achievement badges. The correct name of this medieval style garment is a capuche, which is pronounced ka-poosh. The design of the hood has been carefully chosen to lie properly when left down (the normal way SpiralScouts members are to wear the capuche) so please do NOT change the cut shape or appearance (other than small changes for fit). The capuche should be made from a dark chocolate brown material, similar in color to the color samples available.

Instructions Lay out all the pattern pieces on a table. match up the arrows and letters, and tape them with the points of the arrows touching (this will require some trimming of the edges along the match marks on most pages. Now you'll have 3 distinct pattern pieces - the hood, the bib front, and the bib back. Note the different cutting lines for small and large capuches. The front and back should be cut on a fold (folded edge is marked on the pattern). The hood can be cut twice, or cut on a fold (my preference is to cut on a fold - one less seam required this way).then trim the outlines of the pattern pieces, get your sewing machine and fabric out, and start to work! When you cut out the pattern, be sure to save the written instructions and tips for future reference. Sew the bib front and back together on the flat edges - these are the shoukder seams. If you've cut the hood as two pieces, sew those edges together. This is the back of the hood. Sew the top of the hood. There are two very short edges on the hood piece. Sew them together. Line this seam up with the center of the front of the bib; Line the back seam or fold of the hood up with the center of the back of the bib. Sew all the way around the neck. If you look on the pattern pieces, the neckline of the bib is marked with a "B" and the neckline of the hood is marked with an "A" - matching these two points up will also help get the hood attached straight to the bib. Finally, hem the bottom of the bib and the opening of the hood.

Notes Save this pattern for others to use! With an appropriate weight cloth, this garment does not need to be lined. However, for durability and appearance, lining may be desirable to give a good drape with the weight of earned merit badges and pins attached to the front bib. Bib may be gathered at the shoulder to drape well and avoid covering shirt shoulder patches. Rather than altering this pattern, gather shoulders for proper fit, and let gather out as your youngster grow. The hood and neck sizes of this pattern will accommodate most sizes all the way to adult. Hood requires 2 pieces cut from the pattern piece (or that the pattern be cut on the fold), and care should be taken not to reverse the side of the cloth that will be the outside. Tabs on hood pieces join at the front to make a cowl collar. This design, a flat topped hood, has been chosen for its appearance, so please do not alter the shape. The neck hole of the bib may need adjustment as well as the hood itself. Experiment with scrap cloth first if this may be the case. Cloth should drape well, and flannel or twill work nicely. 100% synthetics should be avoided. See SpiralScoutsTM swatches for a sample of the color, which is chocolate or dark brown. If you prefer not to sew this garment yourself, visit the SpiralScoutsTM Shoppe, http://store.spiralscouts.org to order ready-made official capuches.
