CALL TO ARTISTS DOWNTOWN SYLVA MURAL PROJECT SYLVA, NORTH CAROLINA The Town of Sylva and the Sylva Public Art Committee invite artists or artist teams to submit qualifications for an artist to develop a mural concept and for installation of mural by artist(s) on the wall of Ward Plumbing and Heating on Mill Street in downtown Sylva, NC. Project History/Scope Sylva, North Carolina (population 2,743) is a vibrant community in the Western North Carolina mountains located 45 miles West of Asheville. Sylva is the Jackson County seat and located 5 miles from Western Carolina University. Sylva s historic downtown serves as the cultural and culinary center. Its natural beauty, proximity to trails and waterways, and distinctive sense of community make Sylva an ideal business location, a great place to visit, and a better place to call home. Please visit http://townofsylva.org or www.mainstreetsylva.org for more information about our town. An artist or artist team is being selected to develop the first public mural downtown. The mural concept is for the artist to create mural representative of a vintage postcard that is engaging and representative of the community. The Public Art Committee envisions a historic postcard with the letters of Sylva filled with 5 of our community s attributes. The Town of Sylva and Public Art Committee will consider other mural concepts that are representative of the community. If interested and schedule permitting, the artist may have the opportunity to work with art students at Western Carolina University to engage more of the community. Artists should indicate whether they are interested in this in the artist statement. Once the concept is reviewed by the Sylva Public Art Committee and the Board of Commissioners, the artist will be responsible for materials as well as the labor to paint the approved mural onto the wall. Please note the specifications on the attached drawing including the surface area of the block wall at approximately 53 feet in length and a height of 21 feet eight inches. We ask that the top of the wall remain a solid color or simple pattern for easier maintenance. Budget Artist finalists may propose design concepts with a final project budget of up to $10,000. The final proposed project budget must be inclusive of all fees, including but not limited to design fees, costs for installation, materials, administrative costs, insurance and all travel expenses related to the project upon artist selection through completion of the project. Artists will be required to meet the Town s insurance requirements.
