APPLICATION NOTE - SR001 Cold Weather Application Silent Running is best applied with the ambient, material and substrate temperature in the range of 65-85 degrees F. Lower temperatures will result in longer dry times, and Silent Running should be applied in thinner coats as sagging may occur. Lower temperature coats should not exceed 10-12 mils in thickness, if there is any question, a small test area should be coated. Wait 20-30 minutes to observe the results. Remember, just because the air temperature is in the acceptable range, material and substrate may not be. Allow sufficient time for both material and substrate to reach an acceptable temperature if they have been exposed to cold.

APPLICATION NOTE - SR002 Surface Preparation Surface preparation is important to successful application and performance of Silent Running. All surfaces should be clean, dry, dust and oil free. NOTE Silent Running is meant to be applied directly to the structural substrate. Do not apply over previous coverings such as foam, cork, vinyl, rubber mats etc. For shiny surfaces such as fiberglass gel coat, metals that have been coated with a protective coating, or even wood with a finish coat on them, abrade the surface in a well defined cross hatch pattern for best adhesion using an 80 grit sandpaper. Vacuum or tack rag to ensure all dust is removed. If there is any rust or corrosion, chip, grind, scrape or sand to get all loose and flaking material off. The better the surface prep, the better Silent Running will adhere and perform.

APPLICATION NOTE - SR003 General Application Guidelines Silent Running may be brushed, rolled or sprayed on. Ultimate goal is to get 40-50 mils total thickness in multiple coats. The thicker the substrate the more coats of Silent Running will be required. Wait until the applied coat is dry to the touch and then apply the next coat. Temperature and humidity will affect dry times. At 70 degrees F and average humidity, Silent Running will dry to the touch in about 1 hour. Do not thin regardless of application method. Brushing - use a wide (4 ), thick nylon bristle brush. Do not tip off on edge of can, keep a lot of material on the brush. Use short strokes, apply thick. You should be able to apply 10-12 mils per coat. Try not to paint back and forth as this will just cause the coat to become thinner and thinner. Roller - use a 3/8 knap roller. Use short strokes, try to avoid rolling back and forth and this will also cause the coat to become thinner. Use a light brush to tip off the stipples if desired. Spray - We use a pressure pot with a Binks 2001 spray gun and a large orifice tip (needle is a 565, air nozzle is 66SD and fluid nozzle is 66SS, or specify a gel coat tip). About 30-35 psi of pressure at the pot and ~35 psi at the gun. Use a fluid hose from the pot to the gun with a minimum ID of 0.25. Hold the tip about 14 from the surface. You should be able to spray 10-12 mils per coat. For airless, a Grayco airless sprayer with a #WPR340 tip (0.040 ) was used with 3,000 PSI. Remove filters to allow material to pass easily through the system.

APPLICATION NOTE - SR004 Finishing To get the best surface finish, spray application of Silent Running works the best. Silent Running can very easily be sprayed at a thickness of 10 12 mils per coat. If rolling Silent Running on, follow up with a fine bristle or foam brush to lightly tip off the stippling left behind by the roller. If brushing on, again, very lightly go over the surface to smooth out the brush marks. Be careful as too much brushing will thin the surface coating reducing the amount applied.

APPLICATION NOTE - SR005 Accelerating Dry Times Silent Running is best applied with the ambient, material and substrate temperature in the range of 65-85 degrees F. Low temperatures and high humidity will affect dry times. To help decrease dry times, the use of low heat indirectly applied to spaces in which Silent Running has been applied and gentle air movement will help speed up the dry time. High power heaters and fans are NOT recommended.

APPLICATION NOTE - SR006 Warm Weather Application Silent Running is best applied with the ambient, material and substrate temperature in the range of 65-85 degrees F. Higher temperatures will result in longer dry times, and Silent Running should be applied in thinner coats as sagging may occur. Higher temperature coats should not exceed 10-12 mils in thickness, if there is any question, a small test area should be coated. Wait 20-30 minutes to observe the results. Remember, usually with higher temperatures comes higher humidity. Higher humidity will result in longer dry times.

APPLICATION NOTE - SR007 Bare Wood Application Silent Running is best applied with the ambient, material and substrate temperature in the range of 65-85 degrees F. When applying to bare wood such as a plywood, the first coat will act as a primer/sealer. It will soak into the wood and disappear. Subsequent coats can then be applied and should be built up to at least a 40 50 mil total thickness. Due to the absorptive properties of the wood, a gallon will probably not make the 40 square foot theoretical coverage number. So plan accordingly when estimating the amount required, it is better to go a little too thick rather than too thin. A rough primer coat may be applied in lieu of the first coat of Silent Running. Do not use a finish primer!

APPLICATION NOTE - SR008 Dry Film Thickness The ultimate goal with Silent Running is to build up multiple coats to achieve a minimum Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of 40 mils or 1 mm. This is best done in multiple thin coats rather than 2 thick coats for several reasons; 1 Thicker coats will take much longer to dry 2 Thick coats increase the chance of running or sagging on vertical surfaces 3 Thin coats allow the coats to be applied in a cross hatch pattern, improving the product s damping characteristics. It is more important to build up the coats regardless of application method to the minimum DFT of 40 mils rather than attempting to put on just 2 thick coats.

APPLICATION NOTE - SR009 Over Coating Silent Running Silent Running may be over coated once it is dry and cured. Most finish coatings can be applied over Silent Running, however, be sure to test a small area first to ensure there are no adverse reactions. While Silent Running usually dries to the touch in approximately 1 hour, the cure time can take several days. It is important to be sure to give ample time for Silent Running completely dry and cure prior to over coating. Any moisture trapped beneath a finish coat may cause the finish coat to lift or peel. Minimum cure time is 4 days at 70 F and 50% RH.
