Turn the kitchen you imagine into a reality. A new kitchen doesn t have to be hard work and with help from Mitre 10, you re on the right track. This mighty helpful planning guide is full of tips and advice to help you create your dream kitchen. This guide assists you with information needed to plan, design, order and install a new kitchen. So let s get started. For inspiration and design ideas, make sure you also have a copy of our Imagine TM Kitchens catalogue. PLAN: Start with a list. This is the first and most important step to achieving the kitchen you want. In addition to looking great, your new kitchen needs to work for you. The planning step is about sorting out the practicalities. Begin by making a list of all the features and functions you are looking for in your kitchen. This would include things like: 1. Does your kitchen need to handle the demands of a family? 2. Would you like to include more drawers, making access to pots and pans easier? 3. Do you plan to install a dishwasher? 4. Do you need a pantry cabinet for extra storage? The Working Triangle Once you have your list, you then need to consider the natural flow between work zones in the kitchen. This work path is often referred to as the working triangle. The working triangle illustrates the path between the most frequently used work areas, such as the fridge, sink and cooking appliances. Reducing the size of the working triangle will save you time and effort in your new kitchen. Using these four common kitchen layouts (Straight Line, L-shape, U-shape and Galley), and referring to the working triangle, select the design most suited to your new kitchen. Straight Line Kitchen This layout is best when the space available for your new kitchen is limited. L-Shaped Kitchen One of the most common layouts is the L-shaped kitchen, ideal for homes incorporating a small table for dining in the kitchen space. U-Shaped Kitchen If you have a large room, and want the most efficient working triangle, then the U-shaped kitchen is ideal. It is also perfect for the demands of a family, offering maximum storage space with many wall cabinet options. Galley Kitchen This layout is featured in many homes, as it provides two opposing working and storage areas. Add a couple of bar stools to the island unit and this becomes a great kitchen for entertaining. Ideal for open plan living. PLAN: Do s and Dont s. What to do Leave space between a cabinet and your wall so doors can be fully opened and the cabinet easily accessed. For ease of plumbing, place a dishwasher near the sink and allow a minimum 600mm (636mm including panels) space to house it. Allow a minimum 450mm either side of the cooktop for safety and extra working space. Use drawers for convenient access to everyday items. Allow a minimum 1.2m between opposite cabinets for manoeuvrability. Allow a minimum 450mm benchtop space between the stove and sink for food preparation. Allow a minimum 650mm between your cooktop and rangehood. Don t place tall tapware in front of an opening window. Don t place drawers in a corner where they can block other cabinets. Don t place a cooktop next to a wall where it can cause overheating. Allow a minimum 450mm on either side. Don t install a full set of drawers next to a cooktop. This can provide easy access to a hot cooking area for young children. Don t place your dishwasher or stove in a corner where it can block other cabinets. What not to do Mighty important! Remember that qualified/licensed tradesmen (electricians and plumbers) should be involved where any services need to be disconnected or moved to suit the installation of your new kitchen. 4 imagine the possibilities
Kitchen Design example CORNER CORNER Shown here is a sample of a kitchen design. You can create a similar design using our handy grid and push-out shapes on page 7. This design highlights the cupboards used, and indicates where panels should be used. You ll notice that we have marked in a solid line, indicating the wall perimeter of the kitchen. To design your own kitchen use the grid provided on page 6. Panels are used to finish off the look of your kitchen, and do not require hinges. Always select panels in the same finish as your kitchen doors. The U-Shaped kitchen featured is the Ravina from our Imagine TM Kitchens range. When should Panels be used? 1. Finishing off exposed cabinet ends Wherever a cabinet has a visible side you will need to purchase an end panel. Choose either a wall end panel or base end panel, depending on the cabinet you are fixing to. (Fig 1) Fig 1 2. Filling exposed gaps where a cabinet won t fit If your plan includes a small gap between your cabinets and a wall and a full cabinet won t fit then you will need to use a matching end panel (base or wall) cut to the required width. (Fig 2) Fix the panel to the wall and cabinet using screw-on L brackets, which are available in the hardware department of your local Mitre 10 store. Fig 2 3. Creating cavities Cavities are needed to house your fridge and/or dishwasher, otherwise you will see the exposed white ends of the cabinets. For the dishwasher cavity, secure two base end panels to either side of the cabinets, leaving at least a 600mm space (636mm including end panels). (Fig 3) Fig 3 To house the fridge use the pantry end panels. In most cases, a mm wide opening will be sufficient, enabling you to include a fridge wall cabinet in your design. (Fig 4) Note: All panels are 18mm thick, allow for this in your design. Tip: Save money by cutting a base end panel into two pieces, using half on each side. Remember with the dishwasher in place, you will only see the front of the panel. Fig 4 5
DESIGN: Create your kitchen. Now that you have completed the planning process, measure the dimensions of the room you will be using for your new kitchen. Don t forget to measure the fixed installations that occupy space, such as doors and windows. Be sure to mark current electrical and plumbing locations. INSTALL: DIY instructions. STEP 1 Getting started. Before you can commence your kitchen installation, you need to ensure all base and wall cabinets are assembled. Follow the easy step-by-step instructions provided with each cabinet. When all cabinets are assembled, start positioning them against the wall in the same order as shown on your kitchen plan. Once your first cabinet is in position, use a spirit level to check it is level, and adjust the feet accordingly. Use the 60mm head holed screws (supplied in your cabinet hardware pack), to fix the cabinet to the wall. Ideally fix it into a stud or noggin, but if this isn t possible, use a plaster plug (available at Mitre 10). STEP 2 Fixing the base cabinets. Continue to align your remaining base cabinets against the first one (Step 1) which is fixed to the wall. Before fixing the remaining cabinets to the wall, clamp and then fix each cabinet to each other. Once you have clamped and fixed, then one by one, screw each cabinet to the wall. Tip: There will be enough screws provided in the cabinet hardware packs to use for fixing the cabinets to each other, and the wall. Mighty Helpful Tip: If your kitchen is an L-shape or a U-shape, start with your mm corner cabinet. From here you can then start positioning the additional cabinets as per your plan. 17
STEP 3 Fixing the benchtop. With your base cabinets in place, measure your required benchtop space, and cut the required lengths, using a circular saw. Now carefully position and fix your benchtop to the top of the base cabinets. The benchtop can be secured with screws (use additional screws from your cabinet hardware pack), through the front and rear top rails of the base cabinets. Where two benchtops join each other, you can either use a benchtop joining strip (available at Mitre 10), or alternatively, for a truly seamless finish, request the help of your local cabinet maker who will create a mason s mitre. STEP 4 Fixing the wall cabinets. If your design includes wall cabinets, follow the same process as the base cabinets (Step 2), ensuring all wall cabinets are firmly secured to the wall (and each other) using the appropriate screws. Remember that there should be enough screws left over from your cabinet hardware packs. It is extremely important that you fix wall cabinets into studs or noggins, and into each other. Use a stud finder (available at Mitre 10) to assist you in this process. If your design includes a pantry: Ensure that the top of all wall cabinets are aligned with the top of the pantry cabinet, leaving approximately 730mm between the benchtop and the bottom of the wall cabinet. If your design does not include a pantry: Generally the bottom of the wall cabinet should be at least 650mm off the benchtop. Please note: 650mm is the minimum requirement between a cooktop and rangehood. 18
Mighty Helpful Tip: STEP 5 The finishing touches. There are many other ways your local Mitre10 store can help you complete your kitchen renovation, including: flooring, lighting, sinks, tapware, paint and appliances such as stoves, cooktops and dishwashers. Doors: Once you have matched all the doors to their cabinets, fix the doors following the detailed instructions included in your cabinet pack. Carry out any adjustment of the doors via the mounting plate and hinge (outlined in the instructions for the cabinets). This will ensure all doors are level. On single door cabinets decide if you want left or right side opening doors. Drawers: Detailed assembly instructions of the drawer unit are included in the cabinet pack. Panels: Refer to detailed instructions on page 5. Fix panels to exposed ends, including island unit back panels from the inside of the cupboard only. Use any additional screws from your cabinet pack to fix your panels. Remember: The maximum screw length for fixing panels is 28mm. Fixing the kickboards: Measure and cut the kickboards to suit the length and run of base cabinets. Fix adjustable feet clips (provided in your cabinet pack) to the back of the kickboards with the screws provided. Be sure to align the feet to the clips. Once securely fastened, align the kickboard with the adjustable feet and press into place. Personalise with a handle of your choice: As a last step, drill and fix your handles. You can choose from the range provided at your local Mitre 10 store. STEP 6 Time for the tradies Now that your kitchen is securely in place it s time to install your appliances, sink and tapware. This will require the help of licensed tradespeople such as an electrician and plumber. Mighty Helpful Tip: Stuck for a tradesman?
