Radiant Star Each point has 64 diamonds that are arranged in eight rows with eight diamonds in each row Compliments of www.quilting-tidbits.com

Color Layout Guide Using your fabric choices You will cut a small piece of fabric and paste it over the colors in this guide. The alpha character will not change; just the colors.

Color Chart The sections on this color chart represents the color layout for each point in the Radiant Star quilt. Only the colors will change to reflect your color choices. The alpha character will remain the same. In other words, the alpha A is yellow for me but may be another color for you. But the position of all A s will not change.

Quarter Inch Seams If you don t have a quarter inch presser foot you should buy one. Then apply a magnetic strip to the throat of your machine just to the right of the presser foot and immediately in front as shown here. This will form a continuous support guide when sewing quarter-inch seams. The edge of the magnetic strip helps to keep the fabric from traveling over the top which helps achieve an accurate quarter-inch seam.

How to Cut Strips Make a small cut on the edge of your piece of fabric and tear from selvage to selvage which is the straight of the grain. Trim the raw edges with the rotary cuter making a nice even finish. Then reposition the ruler to the 2 ½ inch mark on the ruler, cut and stack the required amount of strips needed. See the yardage chart for the number of strips needed for each color.

How to Cut Strips Continued After you trim away the torn ragged edge, reposition your ruler to the right and line-up the 2 ½-inch mark on the ruler with the clean edge, cut the strips and stack. Make sure your ruler is always on the 2 ½-inch mark before you cut. Stack the cut strips by color. There will be a total of 64, 2 ½-inch strips.

Sewing Layout Start with the second strip on the bottom and the first strip on the top. Each new strip will be placed under the previous strip and down 2- inches from the top. Be sure to off-set each strip by 2-inches at the top.

Cutting Diamond Strips After sewing the eight units together place the first unit on the cutting table and align fabric A across the top line on the gridded cutting mat. Match the ruler s 45-degree line with the same line. The ruler will naturally follow the 45-degree marking on the cutting mat. Trim off the uneven end of the unit. Reposition the ruler matching the 2 ½-inch line with the angled cut you just made. The 45-degree line on the ruler should line up with the top seam line on the strip. Make sure that the 45-degree line is parallel with the lines on the gridded board and cut. Correct the angle after several cuts if needed. Cut all eight strips, stack and label as section one.

Cutting Diamond Strips Continued Be sure and label each stack. Once all units have been cut into 2 ½-inch diamond strips you are ready to assemble the 8-points.

Matching Seams Draw your quarter-inch seam allowance on the wrong side of section two and on the right side of section one. Don t skip this step as it will help you perfect the joining task. With right sides together pin match seams, seat seams, baste seams and then sew seams. You must cross the match point exactly when sewing. The proof will be in the pudding when you open the strips to see that all intersections are perfect. A Radiant Star quilt requires that all intersections match exactly.

Matching Seams Continued Match the points where the seam allowance pencil lines cross the stitched seams. Push a pin through the first matching point on section two to the match point on section one underneath. The seams will seat together. Use your thumb and forefinger to rock the two strips back and forth until you feel the seams fall into place (seated).

Matching Seams Continued Pick up the next two strips (three and four) in section one and repeat the process of matching seams; repeat again for five and six and then seven and eight. You will now have four sets of strips in section one. Repeat this process again by joining strips one/two to three/four and five/six to seven/eight. Repeat one more time and join strips one/two/three/four to strips five/six/seven/eight. You now have one complete Radiant Star point completed. Repeat this process seven more times to form the other seven points.

Joining the Eight Points If you have done everything correctly, you will have eight identical points. Pick up two points and join them from the radiant point down to the star center. Leave the quarter inch seam allowance free at the radiant point. This makes it easy to add the corner blocks. Join two more points and then join the two sections in the middle to form half of the center star. Trim the tips along the center line to reduce bulk.

Joining the Eight Points Continued Repeat the process of joining the next four points for the second half of the Radiant Star. Be sure and leave the quarter-inch seam allowance free; trim the tips at the center line. Carefully match and pin the center point, pushing the seams in opposite directions. Baste across the center for about 5-inches and check to make sure the center diamonds line up perfectly. The center must lie flat. If all is good stitch the two sections together stopping ¼-inch on the outside edges to add the square corners and half square triangles.

Bias Grain Each diamond point will have a stretchy side and a stable side. Lay the Radiant Star right side up on a flat surface. Mark the 8 stable sides with a piece of masking tape. Now measure the length of each stable side from tip to tip (include the seam allowance). Mark each measurement on the tape using the decimal format. Record the length of the longest stable diamond side. This length is the measurement for the 4 corner squares which you will cut from the background fabric. Using the same largest figure, multiply the measurement by 1.414 (square root of 2) and round to the next ¼-inch. Using this figure cut one square. Fold the square on the diagonal twice to make four triangles. Press to form creases, open and cut on the creases. Place a pencil dot on the 90-degree angle exactly ¼-inch from each edge and on the wrong side. Sew the stretchy diamond side (left side) first with the diamonds on the bottom and the square on the top. Push a pin through both the square and the diamond exactly at the point where the ¼-inch dot comes together with the ¼-inch seam allowance on the 8-point star. Ease the diamonds in to fit the triangle by pin basting together and sew outward. Handle gently and try not to stretch. Flip the star so that the diamonds are on the top. At precisely the same ¼-inch point match and pin the outside edges of the triangle to the diamonds and stitch outward.
