SECTION 06 40 23 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL WOODWORK PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY A. Section includes interior woodwork items indicated not specified elsewhere and as specified. B. Options: 1. Where casework shown can be provided in the configurations and size shown, such case work may be provided as modular casework per the requirements of Division 12 Section "Manufactured Wood Casework." 1.2 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Submit complete printed data on all specified manufactured items. B. Shop Drawings: Submit Shop Drawings for shop fabricated items, showing location of each item, dimensioned plans and elevations, large scale details, anchors and other components. Indicate compliance with specified Standards and other specified requirements for materials and workmanship. C. Samples: 1. Submit samples of laminate of colors and patterns selections by Architect. 2. Submit solid wood for transparent finish, a set of 3 samples, minimum one foot long, each required configuration, each specie, showing extremes in color and grain. 3. Submit solid wood for opaque finish, 3 samples, minimum foot long, each configuration. 4. Submit panel products or veneer for transparent finish, 3 samples, 12" square, showing extremes in color, grain and characteristics. 5. Submit samples, approximately 6 square full thickness corner sections of Epoxy tops having finish proposed for the project. 1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Fabricator/Installer: A firm which has successfully produced work similar to the quality specified and in the quantity shown for a period of not less than 5 years. B. Reference Standards: Comply with the applicable provisions for grading and workmanship of the "Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards", Version 1.0, published by the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) (herein referred to as Standards), except as otherwise specified. 1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. B. Store woodwork materials and completed woodwork only in a dry, ventilated place, protected from the weather. C. Protect woodwork from soiling and damage during handling and installation. Keep covered with polyethylene film or other protective covering. D. Do not deliver woodwork until painting, wet work, grinding and similar operations which could damage, soil or deteriorate woodwork have been completed in installation areas. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, woodwork must be stored in other than installation areas, store only in areas which meet the requirements specified for installation areas. 1.5 JOB CONDITIONS A. Environmental Requirements: Do not start Work until room or space is at normal use temperature and humidity and wood has tempered to the room or space. B. Field Measurements: Where woodwork is indicated to fit to other construction, verify dimensions of other construction by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work. 1. Locate concealed framing, blocking, and reinforcements that support woodwork by field measurements before on Shop Drawings. 1.6 COORDINATION A. Coordinate and locations of framing, blocking, furring, reinforcements, and other related units of Work specified in other Sections to ensure that architectural woodwork can be supported and installed as indicated. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS A. Plastic Laminate: Comply with the requirements of "Publication No. LD3" by the National Electrical Manufacturer's Association (NEMA), General-Purpose type (HGS), 0.048", except post formed type (HPG) for surfaces shown formed, 0.039"). Colors, patterns and texture selected by the Architect. 1. Chemical-Resistant, High-Pressure Decorative Laminate: NEMA LD3, Grade HGP and Test Procedure 3.9.5: a. Pionite Chemguard; Pionite. b. Chemsurf; Wilsonart 2. Backer Sheet: NEMA LD3, 0.028" VGS. B. Solid Finish Wood (Transparent Finish): AWI Grade I plain sawn Northern hard white maple, selected for compatibility of color and grain from piece to piece. C. Solid Finish Wood (Opaque Finish): Paint grade poplar or birch. D. Panel Product: 1. Transparent Finish: AWI grade "A" plain sliced Northern hard white maple, book matched hardwood veneered veneer to fiberboard core, as specified or particle board core, as specified maximum 8" veneer flitch width. 2. Opaque Finish: Sound (paint) grade poplar or birch veneered veneer to fiberboard core, as specified or particle board core, as specified. 3. Particle Board: ANSI A 208.1 composed of wood chips, medium (40-50 PSF) density, Grade M-2-Exterior Glue (no Formaldehyde), sanded faces, fire retardant treated where indicated, and where used as backing core of wall paneling (UL stamp for Class 1. rating). E. Hardboard: ANSI A 135.4, pressed wood fibers with resin binders, tempered grade, 1/4" thick unless shown otherwise, smooth two sides where exposed. F. Fiberboard: ANSI A208.2 composed of wood reduced to fine fibers mixed with binders and formed into panels by heat and pressure, 37 to 50 lb./cu.ft. density, grade MD-exterior glue (no Formaldehyde). G. Thermoset Decorative Overlay Board: Particleboard specified above, or medium-density fiberboard specified above with surface of thermally fused, melamine-impregnated decorative paper complying with LMA SAT-1. H. Open Adjustable Shelf Supports and Brackets: 1. Adjustable Shelf Supports: Heavy-duty slotted steel, BHMA A156.9, B04102. a. Knape & Vogt No. 87. b. Reeve No. RV-700. c. Equal. 2. Shelf Brackets: Provide heavy-duty double-and-triple-hooked steel brackets, BHMA B04112. a. Knape & Vogt Nos. 186 and 187. b. Reeve NO. RV-767. c. Provide shelf rests. 3. Finish: Satin Chrome or Zinc. I. Cabinet Hardware (except where Drawings indicate otherwise): 1. Adjustable Pilaster Shelf Supports and Brackets: Flush mounted pilaster type slotted steel standards, comply with BHMA B84073. Provide matching shelf rests, BHMA B84093. a. Locks: Provide manufacturer standard cabinet locks on classroom millwork. Locks to be keyed to match classroom doors. Refer to Section 087100 Door Hardware for classroom locks. 6. Hinges: Institutional type, 5 knuckle, BHMA B1201 7. Pulls: Rod type, 5/16" diameter, 7/8" finger clearance, 4" screw centers. a. Stanley No. 4483. b. Hafele No. 116.39.464 c. Equal 8. Drawer and Cupboard Locks: BHMA E0761. a. Provide on all doors and drawers. 9. Finish for Exposed Cabinet Hardware: Except as otherwise indicated, provide the following finish for exposed hardware comply with BHMA A156.18. For items not available in required finish, provide finish selected by Architect from those available. If more than one finish is indicated, match finish of hardware items on each "set" of casework as indicated. a. Satin Chromium Plated: BHMA 626 for brass or bronze base; BHMA 652 for steel base. J. Coat Hooks: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide coat hooks as manufactured by Hewi or comparable product as approved by the Architect. 1. Install coat hooks on wood trim. Refer to drawings for size and locations. K. Miscellaneous Accessories: 1. Nails: Select the material, type, size and finish required for each use. Comply with FS FF-N-105 for applicable requirements. 2. Anchors: a. Select the material, type, size and finish required by each substrate for secure anchorage. Provide nonferrous metal plated or galvanized anchors. b. Provide toothed steel or lead expansion bolt devices for drilled-in-place anchors. 3. Closet Poles: Chrome plated tubing cut to lengths required, with standard wrought steel flanges (one with open top). 4. Center Brackets: Combination shelf and closet pole support, wrought steel with enamel finish, BHMA B84052. 5. Grommets: 1¼ diameter molded plastic with matching caps having slops for wire passage unless otherwise shown. 6. Other Accessories: As indicated on the drawings. 7. Hooks: Hewi 513 or equal. 2.2 EPOXY SINKS AND COUNTERTOPS A. Countertops: Epoxy resin tops, 1-inch thickness, with tolerance not exceeding plus or minus 1/32 inch. Provide front and end overhang of 1 inch over base cabinets, formed with continuous drip groove on under surface 1/2 inch from edge. B. Cast Epoxy Resin: Factory-molded tops of modified epoxy resin formulation, uniform mixture throughout full thickness. Provide in smooth, nonspecular finish of color indicated. 1. Color: Black. 2. Physical Properties: Comply with the following minimum requirements: a. Flexural strength: 15,000 psi. b. Compressive strength: 35,000 psi. c. Hardness (Rockwell M): 100. d. Water absorption (24 hrs): 0.02 percent (maximum). e. Heat distortion point: 350 deg F (176 deg C). f. Thermal shock resistance: Highly resistant. C. Chemical Resistance: Spot test with the following reagents in standard laboratory concentrations, in contact with finished top for 24 hours; top shall be entirely unaffected or show only slight dulling of finish: 1. Glacial acetic acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, ammonium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, amyl acetate, benzene, ethyl acetate, ethyl ether, hydrogen peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone, phenol, trichloroethylene, zinc chloride, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, chromic acid, calcium hypochlorite, acetone, aqua regia, butyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, formaldehyde, methyl alcohol, kerosene, silver nitrate, xylene. D. Workmanship: Cast surfaces very smooth, with factory cutouts for sinks and drip grooves. Fabricate plain butt-type joints assembled with epoxy adhesive and prefitted, concealed metal spline. E. Cast Epoxy Resin Sinks: Nonspecular black, molded in one piece with surfaces smooth, corners coved and bottom sloped to outlet. Minimum physical properties and chemical resistance as specified for cast epoxy resin tops; 1/2-inch minimum thickness. 1. Sizes: As indicated or manufacturer's closest stock size of equal or greater volume, as acceptable to Architect. Outlets: 1-1/2-inch diameter, 6-inch minimum length, fabricated of cast epoxy resin. open top design and with separate strainer. Provide in same material as sink. Height 2 inches less than sink depth. F. Install sink units to tops with integral rim or sink ring, set in mastic or sealant to form a positive seal with top. Apply approximately 1/8-inch-thick, heat-resistant underseal to undersink surfaces for condensation prevention and sound-deadening. 2.3 FABRICATION A. Shop-fabricate to the greatest extent possible, disassemble only as necessary for delivery and installation. B. Install hardware at the shop prior to delivery. Remove hardware for finish application and reinstall after finishing. C. Fabricate shop built items with scribes to fit to existing construction. D. Standing & Running Trim: 1. Conform to AWI Section 300, premium grade. 2. Mill to profiles in the shop. 3. Shop fabricate to the extent possible. E. Closet Shelving: Except where specifically noted otherwise, provide the following: 1. Minimum 3/4 panel product shelf, for paint 1'-0" wide (for paint) with hardwood edges, except where thermoset overlay (melamine) indicated. F. Adjustable Shelving: Minimum 3/4" panel product shelves, (for paint) with hardwood edges,. except where thermoset overlay (melamine) indicated. G. Casework: 1. Conform to AWI Premium Grade (Sec. 400) and as follows: 2. Face Construction: "Half overlay" type, except as otherwise indicated. 3. Thickness and Style: As shown, or if not shown, provide 3/4" thick doors, drawer fronts and fixed panels, except where required to be thicker by Standards; and provide flush units. 4. Edges of Plastic Laminate Door, Drawers and Face Frame: 3 mil PVC, exposed surfaces. 5. Backs of Plastic Laminate Doors: Plastic laminate matching exposed surfaces. 6. Backs of Plastic Laminate Components (except doors): Provide full backer sheets. 7. Interior Finish Plastic Laminate Casework: Thermoset Decorative Overlay Plastic Laminate (unless otherwise shown). 8. Wood Casework Matching: Run and match grain vertically for drawer fronts, doors and fixed panels. a. 9. Wood Casework Finish: AWI Section 1500 for complete factory application of finish system TR-4; conversion varnish, partially filled effect, satin sheen, stain selected by Architect. Provide specified finish inside and outside. H. Counter Construction: 1. As shown, or if details not shown, comply with Standards and provide 4" high backsplash and end-splash, top-mounted square butt joint, fully covered with matching plastic laminate, eased edges. a. Provide backer sheet on all concealed, semi-exposed and exposed surfaces not covered with plastic laminate. 2. Openings: a. Cut openings for equipment to be installed. Comply with equipment manufacturer's requirements, but provide internal corners of 1/8" minimum radius. Smooth saw cut and ease edges. 3. Counter Top Supports: Where counter top span exceeds 48", provide mid span support as shown, or if not shown provide painted triangular metal gusset support or Unistrut P1000 behind front edge of counter. I. Architectural Paneling: 1. Conform to AWI Section 500, premium grade. 2. For wood paneling, provide book and center matched within panel face, sequence match between adjacent panels and blueprint-matched panels (door faces) (and components) within area. 3. Finish: AWI Section 1500 for complete factory application of finish system TR-4; conversion varnish, partially filled effect, satin sheen, stain selected by Architect. Seal concealed surfaces. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Condition woodwork to average prevailing humidity conditions in installation areas prior to installing. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. Basic Requirements: 1. Install plumb, level, true and straight with no distortions. Shim as required using concealed shims. 2. Cut to fit, unless specified to be shop-fabricated or shop-cut to exact size. 1. Install in single, unjointed lengths for openings and for runs less than maximum length of lumber available. For longer runs, use only one piece less than maximum length available in any straight run. Stagger joints in adjacent members. 2. Distribute defects allowed in the quality grade specified to the best overall advantage, when installing job assembled woodwork items. 3. Cope moldings at returns and miter at corners. 4. Attach woodwork securely in place with uniform joints providing for thermal and building movements. 5. Blind nail where possible. Use fine finishing nails where exposed. Set exposed nail heads. 6. Screw to metal studs behind finish at each crossing. Countersink and plug with matching wood plugs glued and set flush. C. Closet Shelving: 1. Provide shelf and pole supports at maximum 32" o.c. 2. Secure with toggle bolt into cells of masonry units. 3. Secure wood screws into wood blocking built into stud framing for the purpose. 4. Provide end brackets for shelf and rod. D. Adjustable Shelving: 1. Secure plumb and true at maximum 32" o.c. and maximum 6" from ends of shelves. 2. Secure with toggle bolts into cells of masonry units. 3. Secure with wood screws built into stud framing for the purpose. E. Casework - Shop Fabricated Items: 1. Install plumb, level, true and straight with no distortions. Shim as required using concealed shims. 2. Where work abuts other finished work, scribe and cut for accurate fit. Before making cutouts, drill pilot holes at corners. 3. Attach work securely in place with uniform joints providing for thermal and building movements. Secure to anchors or blocking built in or directly attached to substrates. 4. Provide tops fabricated in largest sizes practical. Assemble in field with splines for alignment and drawn tight to hairline contact with tight-joint fasteners. F. Architectural Paneling: 1. Install plumb and square with uniform joints in exact accordance with shop drawings. Use blind clip application. 2. Touch-up finish damage to match factory finish. G. Preparing for Finish: Clean woodwork (not shop finished) and fill nail holes in preparation for finishes specified for job-applied finish. Where woodwork is to receive a transparent finish, use matching wood filler, sand smooth. 3.3 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Repair or remove and replace defective work upon completion of installation.
