RARITIES in PALEOLITHIC ART Human images are rare, but powerful. This human handprint, perhaps the artist s, some of the oldest images are stencil technique of hands (El Castillo, Spain)

ART of the EUROPEAN PALEOLITHIC

ART of the EUROPEAN PALEOLITHIC Teeth ornaments from Grotte Gazel, 15 kya. Left to right: Deer incisor; hare incisor; fox canine; elk tooth.

ART of the EUROPEAN PALEOLITHIC In the soft mud of a few caves, footprints were left behind!

ART of the EUROPEAN PALEOLITHIC Some possibly could have astronomic significance The incised symbols on this bone may represent the phases of the moon. Some painted dots were thought to show Pleiades (middle) and the lunar count (bottom)

ART of the PALEOLITHIC Here is a small stone lamp, used to light the cave walls when the artists worked on their amazing images. (Lascaux, France)

ART of the PALEOLITHIC Cave Crisis For 10 s of thousands of years the caves remain protected by the constant temperature and humidity brought by the natural closing of the caves Once discovered, the climate within the caves has changed drastically

The most caves received 10 s of thousands of visitors per month Air conditioning, lighting, water vapor from respiration, CO2 and possible spoors brought in by visitors have changed the environment. Organic materials used to create the paintings add to the degrading conditions. Most of the cave sites have been declared a UNESCO world heritage site because of it s special cultural significance and closed to the public

Cave Painting Crisis Mold, bacteria and fungus have developed on the walls of the caves. Fungicides and antibiotics have been applied using compresses soaked in the liquid. Solving one problem leads to others- Antibiotic resistance Killing organisms that help control other organisms.

Lascaux closed in 1963 replica created and completed 1983 Altamiraclosed in 1977 reopened limited access replica completed 2001 reopened at the end of 2016 Chauvetclosed in 1994 replica opened in 2014 Cave Painting Crisis

Paleolithic hunters had expert observation skills knowing the animals they shared their world with on an intimate basis. The cave paintings were always drawn from memory, exemplifying their complete understanding of the animals.

Direct observation and memory sketch exercise Take your art materials out and turn to the first blank page. We will view six images of the common animals depicted in the cave art. We will view each for a limited amount of time Then you will attempt to draw them from memory any characteristic that you can remember.
