Info-Retriever 15 - Upgrade Instructions Please print these instructions and use them for reference. If you are upgrading to Info-Retriever 15 from a previous version, the following instructions will tell you how to migrate the data from your old version of Info-Retriever into the new one. These instructions assume that you have just received the new program and are installing a fresh copy of it. If you have already installed Info- Retriever 15 and have entered data into it, be sure to make a backup of your data first. There is no way to undo the migration or upgrade process unless you have made a backup! Upgrading from Info-Retriever 14 Upgrading from Info-Retriever 14 is very simple. In general, all you have to do is install version 15 right on top of version 14. In most cases, the installation will do this automatically. The first time you run Info-Retriever 15, it will automatically update your database to the new Very important! Make a complete, manual backup of the entire Info-Retriever folder (including the \database sub folder) before proceeding. Do not skip this step. 1. Make a manual backup of the entire folder where Info-Retriever 14 is installed. o Make sure that the \Database folder is included in the backup. o Do not use the backup and restore commands in Info-Retriever. Instead, just o Do not skip this step! 2. Install Info-Retriever 15 right on top of Info-Retriever 14. In most cases it will do this automatically. Do not uninstall version 14! 3. Start Info-Retriever 15 and follow the prompts to update your database to the new 4. Now install the workstations on the other computers (network versions only). o Make sure that the main Info-Retriever folder is still fully shared, with permissions set to full access. o Go to each workstation and do the following. o Browse through the share to the main Info-Retriever folder on your server. o Double-click NetSetup.exe to run the workstation installation. o Follow the prompts on the screen (just use the default settings). This should only take about 30 seconds per workstation. Emerald Data, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Page 1 of 5

Instead, just o Do not skip this step! 6. Install Info-Retriever 15 right on top of Info-Retriever 12. In most cases it will do this automatically. Do not uninstall version 12! 7. Start Info-Retriever 15 and follow the prompts to update your database to the new 8. Upgrading from Info-Retriever 2008 If you are upgrading from Info-Retriever 2008 all you need to do is install Info-Retriever 15 right over your existing installation. Then, the first time you start the new version; Info-Retriever 15 will automatically detect and update your database files for you. (See exception below) Very important! Make a complete, manual backup of the entire Info-Retriever folder (including the \database sub folder) before proceeding. Do not skip this step. Important Do not install Info-Retriever 15 on top of any other version except Info-Retriever 2008, or Info-Retriever 12, or Info-Retriever 15. To upgrade from Info-Retriever 2008: 1. Make a manual backup of the entire folder where Info-Retriever 2008 is installed. Emerald Data, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Page 2 of 5

Make sure that the \Database folder is included in this backup. Do not use the backup and restore commands in Info-Retriever. Instead just Do not skip this step! 2. Install Info-Retriever 15 right on top of the existing Info-Retriever 2008 installation. (In most cases it will do this automatically.) Do not uninstall Info-Retriever 2008. 3. Start Info-Retriever 15 and follow the prompts to update your database to the new 4. If you have a network version, install the workstations on the other computers. Make sure that the main Info-Retriever folder is still fully shared, with permissions set to full-access Go to each workstation and do the following. Browse through the share to the main Info-Retriever folder on your server. Double-click NetSetup.exe to start the workstation installation. Follow the prompts on the screen (just use the default settings). This should take only about 30 seconds per workstation. Info-Retriever 15 is now ready to use. If your data does not appear, please read the Exception section below. Also, there is no need to uninstall Info-Retriever 2008 as it has been replaced by Info-Retriever 15. In fact doing so will cause Info-Retriever 15 to be uninstalled. Exception: If you are upgrading from a very early version of Info-Retriever 2008, then your database files will be in a different location and you will need to use the migration Wizard. If you start Info- Retriever 15 and your data is not present, please run the Migration Wizard as described in the next section (upgrading from Info-Retriever 2005). When the Migration Wizard asks you for the location of the source database, look in folder C:\ Users\Public\Emerald Data\Info- Retriever\Database. Upgrading from Info-Retriever 2005 and Below If you are upgrading from Info-Retriever version 2005 or below, follow these instructions to use the Info-Retriever Migration Wizard to migrate your data into the new database. This includes Info-Retriever 2005, Info-Retriever 2000, Info-Retriever 6.0 and Info-Retriever 5.0 (DOS). Preparation: If your old copy of Info-Retriever is on another computer, you should copy it over to a temporary folder on the computer where you plan to install the new Emerald Data, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Page 3 of 5

Just copy the old Info-Retriever folder, including its subfolders over to a temporary location on the new computer. If the old copy is accessible over your network then you can skip this step however the migration will go faster if you do it. Important: You must use the actual database files, not a backup file. The upgrade cannot be done with a compressed backup file. Upgrading from Info-Retriever 2005 and below: 1. Install Info-Retriever 15. 2. After the installation is finished, start Info-Retriever 15, and then shut it down. (This will create a new, empty database.) 3. Start the Info-Retriever Migration Wizard. (Click the Start button, then All Programs, then Info-Retriever 15, then Migration Wizard.) 4. Follow the instructions on the screen. The Wizard will walk you step-by-step through the migration process. When the Migration Wizard asks you for the location of your Info-Retriever database, make sure you provide the actual location of the database files, not a backup file. Data cannot be migrated from backup files. Only actual database files can be used. How to Manually Back Up Info-Retriever Anytime you perform database maintenance, including upgrades as described above, you should make a full, manual backup of your database files. Although this is just a safeguard, it is a very important one. There is no way to undo an upgrade or data migration unless you have a backup. So if something unforeseen should happen, having a backup will be invaluable. How to do it! Making a manual backup is very easy. If you know how to copy and paste files, then you are all set. In short form, all you need to do is copy the main Info-Retriever folder and paste it to another location for safe keeping. What should I copy? We recommend that you copy the entire Info-Retriever folder. This makes it a simple one-step operation and also ensures that you have included all the files that could be affected by the upgrade. Emerald Data, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Page 4 of 5

Manually Backing up Info-Retriever 1. Find where the main copy of Info-Retriever is installed. This will most likely be a folder something like C:\Program Files (x86)\info Retriever, or some variation of it. If you are using Windows 8 or above then the folder will most likely be C:\Info Retriever. If you have a network version of Info-Retriever, look for this folder on your server. (If you are backing up Info-Retriever 5, it will probably be something like C:\RT). 2. Right-click the main Info-Retriever folder and select Copy. 3. Now browse to some other folder, such as a temporary folder, right-click it, and select Paste. When you do this, the entire set of files will be pasted into the temporary folder that you selected.
