Subcut (2) 2½" x 40½" rectangles. *Note: If this fabric is 40" or less in width (selvage to selvage), cut (3) 2½" x WOF strips, sew the strips together (end to end) using 45 seams to make a continuous strip, and cut (2) 2½" x 40½" rectangles. Instructions Blocks for Pieced Border #5 1. Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one 5¼" Fabric D (yellow birds print) square. With right sides together, align the 5¼" Fabric D (yellow birds print) square to the right side of one 5¼" Fabric H (blue tonal) square. Stitch ¼" on both sides of the drawn line. Cut the square in half on the drawn line to yield two 4½" square Cornerstone Blocks. Repeat Step 1 to yield two additional 4½" square Cornerstone Blocks. Diagram 1 2. Referring to Diagram 2, draw a diagonal line on the tonal) square to the upper right edge of one 4½" x 9¾" 4½" x 9¾" Fabric B (wide stripe) rectangle for Block A. Square up Block A to measure 4½" x 9¾". Make a total of four Block A. Diagram 2 3. Referring to Diagram 2, draw a diagonal line on the tonal) square to the upper right edge of one 4½" x 10" 4½" x 10" Fabric B (wide stripe) rectangle for Block B. Square up Block B to measure 4½" x 10". Make a total of two Block B. 4. Referring to Diagram 2, draw a diagonal line on the tonal) square to the upper right edge of one 4½" x 11¼" 4½" x 11¼" Fabric B (wide stripe) rectangle for Block C. Square up Block C to measure 4½" x 11¼". Make a total of four Block C. 5. Referring to Diagram 2, draw a diagonal line on the tonal) square to the upper right edge of one 4½" x 11" 3
4½" x 11" Fabric B (wide stripe) rectangle for Block D. Square up Block D to measure 4½" x 11". Make a total of two Block D. Assembly Refer to the Layout Diagram for the following steps: 1. Border #1. Sew one 1½" x 22½" Fabric G (orange tonal) rectangle to each long side of the 18½" x 22½" Fabric A (main print). Sew one 1½" x 20½" Fabric G (orange tonal) rectangle to each short side of the 18½" x 22½" Fabric A (main print). Center should measure 20½" x 24½". 2. Border #2. Sew one 2½" Fabric E (swirls print) square to one 2½" x 20½" Fabric F (black tonal) for Side Border #2. Sew Side Border #2 to the right long edge of the Center. Sew one 2½" Fabric E (swirls print) square to one 2½" x 22½" Fabric F (black tonal) for Bottom Border #2. Sew Bottom Border #2 to the bottom edge of the Center. Center should measure 22½" x 26½". 3. Border #3. Sew one 2½" x 26½" Fabric E (swirls print) rectangle to each long side of the Center. Sew one 2½" x 26½" Fabric E (swirls) rectangle to each short side of the Center. Center should measure 26½" x 30½". 4. Border #4. Sew one 1½" x 30½" Fabric H (blue tonal) rectangle to each long side of the Center. Sew one 1½" x 28½" Fabric H (blue tonal) rectangle to each short side of the Center. Center should measure 28½" x 32½". 5. Pieced Border #5 (Top/Bottom Borders). Referring to Diagram 3 and noting orientation of the pieces, sew five blocks together in the following order: Cornerstone Block, Block A, Block B, Block A, Cornerstone Block for border. Border should measure 4½" x 36½". Make a total of two borders. Diagram 3 6. Pieced Border #5 (Side Borders). Referring to Diagram 4, sew three blocks together in the following order: Block C, Block D, Block C for the side border. Border should measure 4½" x 32½". Make a total of two side borders. Sew a side border to each long side of the Center. Noting orientation of the border, sew the top and bottom border to each short side of the Center. Center should measure 36½" x 40½". Diagram 4 7. Border #6. Sew one 1½" x 40½" Fabric H (blue tonal) rectangle to each long side of the Center. Sew one 1½" x 38½" Fabric H (blue tonal) rectangle to each short side of the Center. Center should measure 38½" x 42½". 8. Border #7. Sew one 1½" x 42½" Fabric D (yellow birds print) rectangle to each long side of the Center. Sew one 1½" x 40½" Fabric D (yellow birds print) rectangle to each short side of the Center. Center should measure 40½" x 44½". 9. Border #8. Sew one 2½" x 40½" Fabric H (blue tonal) rectangle to each short side of the Center. Center should measure 40½" x 48½". 10. Border #9. Sew one 1½" x 48½" Fabric F (black tonal) rectangle to each long side of the Center. Sew one 1½" x 42½" Fabric F (black tonal) rectangle to each short side of the Center. Center should measure 42½" x 50½". 11. Border #10. Sew one 3½" x 50½" Fabric C (narrow stripe) rectangle to each long side of the Center. Sew one 3½" x 48½" Fabric C (narrow stripe) rectangle to each short side of the Center. Top should measure 48½" x 56½". 4
Finishing 1. Prepare backing fabric to measure approximately 57" x 65". Press seams open. 2. Lay out the quilt top right side up on the top of the batting and wrong side of the backing fabric. 3. Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim backing and batting even with the quilt top. 4. Sew the six 2½" x WOF Fabric G (orange tonal) strips together (end to end) using 45 seams to make a continuous strip. Fold strip in half lengthwise (with wrong sides together) and press. Bind as desired. Layout Diagram While all possible care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this pattern, we are not responsible for printing errors or the way in which individual work varies. 5
