Diagnostic Report

Why read books within your ZPD range? 1. If you wanted to be a great football player, would you improve by playing with your 4 year old brother and his friends? Why? 2. What if you played with a professional team? Would you even be able to get the ball? Why? 3. What if you played with other players who are just a little bit better or close to as good as you are? Why would this help you the most? Reading a book just challenging enough is like playing football with the right team. It makes you better! When you go to take your GCSEs, you will need to be a strong reader and reading books in this range will help you get there. Too Easy ZPD: Just Right Too Hard 2.8 2.8 3.2 3.8 4.8 5.0 5.4 5

How can you be sure you will enjoy your book and will want to finish it? Look at the following photos: What could you look at when choosing your book? 6

How can I be sure I will enjoy my book and will want to finish it? What could you look at when choosing your book? Check that it is in your ZPD range Look at the cover Read the blurb Look for authors you like Look for recommendations by other authors you like Read the introduction Read the first page Make sure you understand most of the words 7

What if I can t find a book I like? Visit: www.arbookfind.co.uk Make a list of things you are interested in: Football Horror Movies Humour 1. Select your interest level 2. Type in your ZPD range 3. Select a topic from your interest list. 4. Click Go 8

What if I want to read a longer book? Pick a book you will be able to finish by your teacher s deadline. If you want to read a longer book, perhaps also take out a shorter non-fiction book and read that first. Use post-its or make a mind map to help you remember important events. Read your book carefully, from beginning to end Use post-it notes to mark Significant moments in the story 9

What can I do to help me prepare for my quiz? 1. Complete your mind map 2. Review your mind map to answer the questions below: - was in it? - happened? - was it set? - did it happen? - did it end the way it did? 10

Hints for Quizzing: 11

Hints for Quizzing: Take your time read the question twice. Ask yourself if you know the answer before looking at the options. Think about when that happened in the book. Look at your mind map to help you. Read all the possible answers carefully. When looking at the answers, ask yourself which events actually happened in the book. Remember the quiz isn t timed. Rephrase the question if you don t quite understand it ask a teacher or librarian to help if you need to. Don t get distracted by your friends, concentrate! 12

Hints for Quizzing: What does the score tell you? How could you use this score to help you choose a book that will make you an even better reader next time? 13

What does my score tell me? 100% This book was comfortable for you, perhaps try a book higher up in your ZPD range next time. 90% This book was perfect for you. Perhaps try one or two book levels higher next time. 80% This book was a little difficult for you. Perhaps choose one or two book levels lower next time. 70% This book was quite challenging for you. Perhaps try a book at the lower end of your ZPD range next time. 60% or below This book was too challenging. Perhaps try a book at the low end of your ZPD or speak to your teacher for help. 14

How do I achieve 100%? True or False? 1. If I choose books above my ZPD range, I will be a better reader. 2. Reading the first page of the book will help me decide if it is a book I will like. 3. If I don t see a book I like, I should just pick anything off the shelf from my ZPD range. 4. I should only choose very long books because they are more challenging. 5. I should use the 5 W s and my mind map to help me prepare for taking the quiz. 6. The quiz is timed. 7. I shouldn t bother looking at the TOPS report. That s just for my teacher. 8. If I achieve 100%, I should choose another book that is the same book level. 15
