Course Sequence (Grades 6-12) Grade 7 Exploratory semester course designed to introduce students to develop basic skills in food preparation and sewing Grade 8 Semester course designed to increase student s life skills and promote self-sufficiency in the area of foods and nutrition as well as basic clothing construction
Course Framework Course Title Grade Level Semesters (1-2-3-4) Prerequisite Course Description Family and Consumer Science 7 One semester none Foods One Quarter: The foods unit will provide the students with a basic knowledge of kitchen and food safety, basic preparation techniques, table setting, manners, and etiquette. Emphasis is also placed on nutritional education, enabling students to make independent food choices for a healthy lifestyle. The lab experiences are designed to reinforce team planning, a cooperative work environment, time management, and critical thinking skills. Sewing One Quarter: The sewing unit introduces the basic skills of hand and machine sewing. Projects are selected to allow students to express their own creativity, while mastering fundamental sewing skills. This opportunity offers a daily hands-on, independent learning experience, which encourages students to assess their work habits and individual progress while learning basic sewing techniques.
