The optical effect of the Kaleidoscope quilt, when finished is achieved by flipflopping every other block 180 degrees when setting them together. This method is used for any sized quilt on this project page. Iron fabrics before cutting and during sewing for better results. Observe grain lines on templates and place template on fabric so the grain lines are straight with the grain of the fabric. Butt templates up when possible or flip template 180 degrees to achieve fabric economy. Chain sewing can be used to continuously join like set pieces. Prepare all pieces need to complete a given step and sew one set right after another without cutting threads until finished with the set. The first step in assembling the Kaleidoscope block is to make the corner pieces. These can be chain sewn to save time and thread. To make the corner pieces, have all the corner pieces of the various fabrics in a pile and the (140) template A pieces in another pile. You may want to mark the template A squares with the diagonal sewing line before you beginning sewing. See the next example. 120-3542 1 1/2 yds Cut: (5) 42 /43 x 7 strips to be cut into (35) Template F 2
To sew the quickie triangle corners for the Kaleidoscope block, place a template A piece, right side down onto a piece. Mark a sewing line diagonally from point to point across the template A piece. After all the corner pieces have been sewn together using the quickie triangle piecing method, it is time to finish sewing together the Kaleidoscope block. Each block will have the exact same fabric placement. Arrange the block according to the example below. The Kaleidoscope block is divided into to halves. Two corner pieces and two triangles make one half. Sew directly on the guideline. The two halves are sew together with one straight seam. Trim off 1/4 seam allowance. Gently press out the corner. The finished block will measure 12 1/2 square. Make 35 of these blocks for a full-sized quilt. Other size options and block settings are given on the chart on page 6. 3
Step 2: Making the Pieced Borders See the Quilt Assembly diagram on page 5 for border placement. Cut (4) template D pieces, (20) template B pieces and (4) template C pieces with template right side up and (4) template C pieces with the template wrong side up to make the reverse pieces. Making Bias Tape There are many ways to bind a quilt. You may have a preferred method and may not choose to do a bias tape binding. Yardage has been included in this project to create a continuous bias tape binding, which is recommended. Bias tape binding is made by cutting strips of fabric on the bias (45 degree diagonal cut.) You will need about 348 of bias tape for this full-sized quilt. Ample inches have been added into this amount for seam allowance and finishing. Step 4: Place two strips right sides together at right angles and sew straight across with 1/4 seam. Continue till you have one long strip of fabric, press open seams. Fold in half lengthwise with right sides out along entire length of bias tape. Attach to quilt following standard binding practices. Step 1: Cut off selvedge edge and place a straight pin parallel to selvedge edge for reference. Cut binding fabric into a 36 x 36 square. selvedge edge 36 x 36 square Step 2: Fold the fabric back diagonally so a straight edges are matched, parallel to the selvedge edge (the edge marked by the straight pin.) Iron this fold. wrong side of fabric Figuring Out How Much Bias Tape You ll Need Add up the lengths of all four sides of your finished quilt, throw in an extra 12 inches for seam allowance and finishing off - That s how much bias tape you will need. Cut on these lines to cut apart. Sharon Holland designs 4

Using the Love Grows fabric collection, the Kaleidoscope quilt can be created in various colorations. Below are two more color options. The fabrics needed to create either of these variations are listed in the same order as in the quilt project sheet. If you would like to create your own look using the Love Grows collection, choose nine prints; (4) dark for template E (4) light for and (1) for the background, templates A, B, C and D. These examples are shown for a queen size quilt. 120-3562 template E and backing 120-3541 template E and backing 120-3591 template A, B, C, D 120-3591 template A, B, C, D 120-3523 template E and bias tape binding 120-3561 template E and bias tape binding 120-3552 120-3552 120-3531 120-3511 120-3571 120-3582 120-3511 120-3522 120-3543 template E 120-3531 template E 120-3583 template E 120-3571 template E 7
