Academy Programmes I) General information on Academy Programmes II) Academy Programmes 2017 III) Evaluation of the Academy Programmes 2

Academy Programmes Support scientific regeneration Science-driven, thematic and target-oriented bodies of research projects Provide platforms for international research cooperation and cooperation with other stakeholders Support multi- and interdisciplinary research of the highest quality Increase scientific and societal impact 3

Budget of the Academy programmes 2016 17.4 million 2013 25.4 million 2015 24.9 million 2014 33.4 million 4

Open consultation for researchers Other ideas Launching a new Academy Programme Joint workshop for the Academy s Research Councils Scientific Steering Committee Decision on the subject Academy Board Proposal Representative of the Administration Office Suggestion Preparatory group Preparation by the civil servants 5 Academy Board Decision on the programme s funding Steering committee for the Academy programme and Sub committee

Preparation of a new programme Open consultation for researchers Preparation by the civil servants Joint workshop for the Academy s Research Councils Other ideas Scientific Steering Committee 6

Steering Committee for the Academy Programme Composed of Academy of Finland Research Council members, representatives of other funding organisations and external experts Tasks to steer and monitor the Programme, to support coordination to prepare the review process of applications to submit to the Academy subcommittee and possible other funding organisations a proposal of the projects to be funded to propose, when needed, to the Research Councils and other funding organisations supplementary application rounds and/or additional funding to submit proposals on projects or project entities to be later incorporated into the Programme as well as to decide on incorporation of a project or a project entity as part of the Programme, provided that these already have funding for it to draw up a plan for the follow-up and evaluation of the Programme to promote the use of research results 7

Coordination of the Academy Programme A key role in forming the Programme s added value and in achieving the objectives of the programme Both scientific and administrative tasks 1-2 Programme Manager(s) and a Project Officer The Programme Manager reports to the Steering Committee The Steering Committee supports, steers and monitors the coordination 8

Preparation of the Academy Programme The planning, application process and monitoring of the Programme Participating in contracting processes for e.g. funding and stakeholder collaboration Following ongoing and forthcoming international research programmes when planning the Academy programme Collecting data for reporting, maintenance the information on projects, forwarding information to the Academy of Finland and other funding agencies 9

Coordination of the Academy Programme Managing the research projects that received funding (payments, changes of the decision, research reports) Communication with the Steering Committee, Finnish and foreign funding agencies, and collaborators Organising the meetings of the Committee and the subcommittee for the Academy programme Organising the evaluation process Submitting the research results gained within the Academy programme (publications, patents, examinations etc.) Foresight of the research in the field of the Academy programme 10

Communication during the Academy Programme Joint seminars promote collaboration between the research projects Collaboration with essential Finnish as well as foreign research programmes Visits, visiting scholars Disseminating the Finnish expertise to international research programmes and research projects Informing of the Academy programme and its results on the website of the programme Promoting the dialogue between researchers and end-users of research results (knowledge broker) Producing multi-disciplinary joint publications and popularized information to end-users of knowledge and other target groups e.g. reports, exhibitions, TV-programmes, social media 11

What is knowledge brokering? Creating links and networks between producers and end-users of knowledge - Bringing operators together or serving as an active link in between (researchers, politicians, businesses, organizations, other shareholders) Active search and dialog between producers and end-users of knowledge - Creates a possibility for new paths, since we do not live in a world of perfect diffusion of information and understanding Modifying knowledge to an end-user-friendly form - Is it ideal to spread knowledge as it is or to add interpretations? - Selectiveness/objectiveness? - How much is it possible to modify knowledge? Broker organization Researchers End-users of knowledge 12

Knowledge brokering at the Academy Programme Acquiring information on research and researchers Know your programmes and projects visits, dialogs, annual seminars identifying key projects and researchers annual/mid reports Acquiring information on end-users of knowledge Who needs information? identifying target groups, persons and networks working at the Steering Committee Creating dialog and brokering knowledge Be visible, communicate and impact: tell a story, draw a picture what kind of, in what form and when is knowledge needed? identifying and creating new tools, mechanisms, forums ja methods roles of the researcher, the university and the Academy 13

Academy Programmes vs. Strategic research Programmes Academy Programmes Research-driven Renewal of the research International collaboration Interaction Stakeholder collaboration Scientific quality Foresight Goal orientation Multi- and interdisciplinarity Internationality Networking Coordinated body of research projects Strategic research Demand-driven Societally significant and influential Solution-oriened Collaboration between producers and end-users of knowledge 14
