Quilt Stats: charmed Finished Size: 49½ x 49½ Finished Block: 7¾ x 7¾ Quantities are for 44 (112cm) wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include ¼ seam allowances. ¼ seams are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated. Materials: 2 ¼ x Charm Packs* {96 5 x5 squares} 2 yards Solid Fabric {centre blocks and sashing} 3 ¼ yard Print Fabric {backing} ½ yard Print Fabric {binding} Crib Size Bamboo/Wool Batting * Charm Packs are 5 x5 pre-cut squares. If you opt to use yardage for your blocks, cut 96x 5 x5 squares from selected print fabrics. Cutting: {one} Take your fabric and cut as follows: from Solid {Sashing} Fabric, cut: - 4x 4 ½ x WOF strips {centre blocks} subcut these into: 32x 4 ½ x 4 ½ squares - 7x 1 ½ x WOF strips {vertical block sashing strips} subcut these into: 30x 1 ½ x 8 ¼ strips 2x 1 ½ x 10 strips - 7x 1 ½ x WOF strips {horizontal row sashing strips} trim selvedge s and set aside WOF = width of fabric from selected {Binding} Print Fabric, cut: 6 each 2 ½ WOF strips from Print {Backing} Fabric, cut into two equal lengths and join along selvedge edge. Press. Preparing: {two} Match two charm squares together, right sides facing, making 54 pairs. Using a fabric marker or pencil and ruler, mark a vertical line on the wrong side of one of each of your charm square pairs at 2 ½ {diagram a}. Stitching: {diagram a} {three} Sew ¼ seam on each side of your marked line for all matched squares in previous step {diagram b}. Sew ¼ each side of marked line. {diagram b} tip: chain stitching at this step helps speed up your piecing

Take your sewn squares and, using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut along the marked line. Without moving the pieces, line your ruler up horizontally at 2 ½ inches and make a cut {diagram c}. This will produce 4x mini charm strips {diagram d}. Press to the left. Repeat for all pieces. Cut along marked line Without moving, cut horizontally at 2 ½ {diagram c} {diagram d} {four} Set aside 64x Mini Charm Strips {mixed for scrappy look} until next step. Take two Mini Charm Strips and join end to end to make a Double Charm Strip Unit {diagram e}. Press to the left. Repeat for all remaining units to yield 64x Double Charm Strip Units. Piecing: {diagram e} {five} To assemble each block you will need: {diagram f} - 2x Mini Charm Strips - 2x Double Charm Strip Units - 1x Solid 4 ½ x 4 ½ Square {diagram f} {five} Lay out pieces in the following block formation {diagram g}: {diagram g} {diagram h} Sew the 2x Mini Charm Strips onto either side of the 4 ½ square. Press seams towards print fabrics. Sew the two Double Charm Strip units to the top and bottom of your pressed piece yielding the above block {diagram h}. Press seams towards white square. Repeat for all remaining strip and square pieces. six} Take eight {8} blocks and cut diagonally to produce 16 edge blocks {diagram i}. {diagram i}

Finishing: {seven} Lay blocks on point in the following layout {diagram j}. Note: refer to this diagram for following steps. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 {vertical sashing strips between blocks} {horizontal sashing strips between rows} {diagram j} {eight} Assemble quilt top in rows. Use a 1½ x 8¼ vertical sashing strip to join each block in each row. Sew outside edge blocks to each end of rows 2 to 7. Press seams to one side and repeat for each row. Using the 1½ x 10 vertical sashing strips join two edge blocks for rows 1 and 8 leaving an overhang at the point end. Note: the overhand at the pointed end of the blocks will allow for accurate quilt top trimming.

{nine} {ten} Measure the length along the top and bottom of your rows. Add 4 to each and cut and join the WOF 1 ½ sashing strips together to match these measurements. Note: adding 2 overhang at the beginning and end of each strip will allow for accurate quilt top trimming. Join each row together with the corresponding horizontal sashing strip as previous step. Press seams to one side. Quilting: {eleven} Layer quilt top, batting and backing fabric and baste with safety pins. {twelve} Quilt as desired. Trim excess. * charmed quilt was machine quilted using a walking foot and straight-line quilting. Binding: {thirteen} Sew 2 ½ binding strips together end to end to form one long strip. Press seams open. Press strip in half with wrong sides together. {fourteen} Using a quarter inch {¼ } seam sew your binding strips to the front of your basted and quilted piece with raw edges together. Start along one side leaving a tail of about 6-10 inches. Sew along until you reach ¼ from the corner. {fifteen} Take your quilt and turn, lift your strip straight up and then bring it back down to align raw edges {diagram k}. Continue sewing your binding strips. Repeat for the next three corners. {stitch until ¼ from corner } {quilt back } {lift strip up, and then down to align raw edges, continue sewing in place ¼ from corner } {diagram k} {sixteen} When you reach the beginning of your binding, stop sewing and match and trim the two tails of binding strip, so it will sit neatly along the quilt edge. Unfold your strips and with right sides together, sew your two tails together {you may need to wrangle your quilt a bit to do this!}. {seventeen} Re-fold sewn strip and lay flat against side of your quilt and sew in place. good time to check your trimmed binding piece and make adjustments to ensure it isn t pulling {eighteen} Turn binding strip to back-side of your quilt and hand-sew in place. * in the case of machine binding complete all above steps, however sewing the binding strip to the back of the quilt in step 14, and turning to the front of the quilt, and machine stitching in step 18.
