Page 2 Plane Blocks: 1. Sew cream Template D and Template Dr pieces to the navy Template C piece. 2. Stitch a cream Template B then cream Template A to the cockpit unit. 3. Stitch two cream 3-1/2" half-square triangles to the red Template E piece as shown. 4. Make fuselage unit by adding cream Template G and Gr pieces to the navy Template F piece as shown. G F E D B Gr C A Dr 5. Stitch two 3-1/2" cream half-square triangles to the navy Template H piece. Add one H 4-3/8" cream half-square triangle to the bottom of the tail section. 6. Lay out the block, each with a cockpit unit, wing unit, fuselage unit and tail section. Stitch the units together. Assembly & Borders: 1. Stitch a 1-1/2" x 22" tan strip to right and left sides of block. Press and trim excess from these and all successive border additions. Add remaining strips to top and bottom. 2. Add 4" x 22" multi-colored planes on black strips to right and left sides, then add 4" x 44" multi-colored planes on black strips to top and bottom of quilt. 3. Add 2" tan strips to right and left sides, then to top and bottom of quilt. 4. Add 5-1/2" x length of fabric strips to right and left sides of quilt. Make two borders each with two 5-1/2" x remaining width of fabric strips by sewing them together end-to-end. Add these borders to top and bottom of quilt. 5. Sew 2-1/2" navy strips to right and left sides, then to the top and bottom of quilt. Finishing: 1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt or tie as desired. 2. Prepare binding from four 2-1/2" x 44" navy strips. Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise. 3. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top. 4. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 5. Turn binding to back of quilt and blind stitch in place.
