Fazely Finished Quilt Approximately: 40" x 40" - Finished Block Size: 14-1/8" square Pilot to Co-Pilot fabrics by Exclusively Quilters - Style #3805 Fabric Requirements: Based on 44" wide fabric 1/2 yard cream (#60139-9) 1 yard navy (#60139-2) 1/4 yard red (#60139-1) 5/8 yard multi-colored planes on black (#60136-8) 1 yard flight plan on blue (#60135-2) 5/8 yard tan clouds (60138-9) 1-1/2 yards fabric for backing (#60135-9 suggested) 42" x 42" quilt batting template plastic Make Templates: Trace templates onto and label. Cutting Directions: All measurements based on a 1/4" seam allowance. From the cream fabric: Cut one 4-3/8" square* Cut two 3-1/2" squares* Cut one each of Templates A, B, D, Dr, G and Gr From the navy fabric: Cut eight 2-1/2" x 44" strips for border and binding From remaining yardage, cut one each of Templates C, F and H From the redfabric: Cut one each Template E From the multi-colored planes on black fabric: Cut three 4" x 44" strips for border, recut one strip into two 22" lengths From the flight plan on blue fabric: Cut two 5-1/2" strips the length of the fabric, parallel to the selvage From remaining fabric, cut four 5-1/2" strips the width of the fabric From the tan clouds fabric: Cut two 1-1/2" x 44" strips, recut into four 1-1/2" x 22" strips Cut four 2" x 44" strips An added 1/8 to 1/2 yard is added to all yardages to account for shrinkage, straightening, cutting errors and prints that may require special cutting to get the best results. You should protect your investment in time and fabric by making sample blocks before cutting into your fabric because Exclusively Quilters will take no responsibility for replacing fabrics. Shops who wish to kit this design are responsible for figuring yardage for their kits if they wish to reduce yardages. Cut squares as indicated: *
Page 2 Plane Blocks: 1. Sew cream Template D and Template Dr pieces to the navy Template C piece. 2. Stitch a cream Template B then cream Template A to the cockpit unit. 3. Stitch two cream 3-1/2" half-square triangles to the red Template E piece as shown. 4. Make fuselage unit by adding cream Template G and Gr pieces to the navy Template F piece as shown. G F E D B Gr C A Dr 5. Stitch two 3-1/2" cream half-square triangles to the navy Template H piece. Add one H 4-3/8" cream half-square triangle to the bottom of the tail section. 6. Lay out the block, each with a cockpit unit, wing unit, fuselage unit and tail section. Stitch the units together. Assembly & Borders: 1. Stitch a 1-1/2" x 22" tan strip to right and left sides of block. Press and trim excess from these and all successive border additions. Add remaining strips to top and bottom. 2. Add 4" x 22" multi-colored planes on black strips to right and left sides, then add 4" x 44" multi-colored planes on black strips to top and bottom of quilt. 3. Add 2" tan strips to right and left sides, then to top and bottom of quilt. 4. Add 5-1/2" x length of fabric strips to right and left sides of quilt. Make two borders each with two 5-1/2" x remaining width of fabric strips by sewing them together end-to-end. Add these borders to top and bottom of quilt. 5. Sew 2-1/2" navy strips to right and left sides, then to the top and bottom of quilt. Finishing: 1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt or tie as desired. 2. Prepare binding from four 2-1/2" x 44" navy strips. Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise. 3. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top. 4. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 5. Turn binding to back of quilt and blind stitch in place.
