The camera was invented many years before film was available to record the image that the camera captured through the lens.
11th Century-invented in Arabia and used to observe solar eclipses. Means dark room.

Johann Heinrich Schulze Discovered that silver nitrate darkens upon exposure to light.
Thomas Wedgewood Created the first photogram. Sir Humphry Davy worked with Thomas Wedgewood in this area of photography.
Joseph Nicephore Niepce Made the first paper negative.
Sir John Herschel Discovered a suitable photographic fixing agent for paper images and gave the new medium the name photography.

Louis Jacques Daguerre Developed a method of making a direct positive image on a silver plate called a Daguerreotype after the inventor.

William Henry Fox Talbot Developed a paper negative from which an infinite number of paper positives could be printed.

Developed the zone theory in Black and White photography and really gave photography the status of an art. Known for his B&W landscape photographs.
There are many other men and women that were involved in the history of the development of the camera and film. This is only a partial list. Notice that no single person is credited with the invention and that the people involved in the development of photography came from all around the world. It is truly an international invention.
