MAKING A TENSION SWATCH OKAY, LISTEN UP... THIS IS IMPORTANT Tension / Gauge These words pop up often in patterns but you shouldn t be scared. We re going to break it down for you. Figuring out your tension is simply measuring how tightly or loosely you are working. If you get it wrong, it s not the end of the world BUT you could end up with the wrong sized garment, or worse... you could run out of yarn (nooooooooooo). So before you start your pattern, you can check your pattern s suggested tension and make a tension swatch in the relevant stitch pattern. For the garter stitch snood in this pattern, the tension is: Garter stitch on 5mm (US8) needles 10cm/4 = 19 stitches 10cm/4 = 38 rows This means that when you work in garter stitch on 5mm (US8) knitting needles, there will be 19 stitches and 38 rows across every 10cm/4 of work. You want your tension swatch to be a little bigger than 10cm/4 so that you can measure without the edges of the work getting in the way. HELP! WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TENSION SWATCH 1 Create a slip knot and place it onto one of your needles. 2 Hold the slip knot needle in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand. The slip knot counts as one stitch. Cast on 22 more stitches using the cable cast on technique. You now have 23 stitches. 3 Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand and hold the empty needle in your right hand. Knit across the 23 stitches on your left needle. This is your first row of knitting. 4 Swap your needles so the empty needle is in your right hand and the full needle is in your left. This is called turning your work and you will do this each time you finish a row. 5 Knit across the 23 stitches on your left needle. Turn your work. 6 Repeat step 5, (knitting every row) 42 times. This process of knitting every row is called garter stitch. 7 Cast off your stitches. TOP TIP: To keep track of how many rows you have worked, make a tally with paper and pen. Add a new dash every time you finish a row. SHELL YEAH BAG

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR TENSION SWATCH Lay your swatch flat without stretching it out. Measuring rows in garter stitch Place your measuring tape on top of the swatch, a little way in from the edge. To measure the rows you will lay the tape straight from top to bottom. In garter stitch, you have bump rows and flat rows. It s a little bit tricky to see the flat rows between the bump rows so its easier to count every bump row as 2 rows. 1 3 bump row flat row 5 7 bump row 9 HELP! WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM

Measuring stitches in garter stitch Lay the tape straight from left to right. Each bump row is made up of top bumps and bottom bumps. To count the stitches, you will only count the top bumps. top bumps bottom bumps 1 2 3 4 5 6 If your tension doesnt match the pattern More stitches and rows than needed means your knitting is too tight. Less stitches and rows means your work is too loose. Tension is important in more advanced patterns but for accessories and beginners pieces, it will be fine if you are a little off the mark. Just keep in mind that as you progress, you may want to try some things to tidy up your tension. SHELL YEAH BAG

MEASUREMENTS This is the size of your finished bag (if everything goes according to plan). 16CM/6.3" 20CM/8" ANY QUESTIONS? Have you checked our video pages? STILL NOT GOT IT? Our gang of master helpers are at the ready: info@woolandthegang.com #WOOLANDTHEGANG

HOW TO MAKE YOUR SHELL YEAH BAG Your bag is made in one piece, then folded and sewn together. 1 Using WATG s New Wave Yarn in colour A, create a slip knot and place it onto one of your needles. 2 Hold the slip knot needle in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand. The slip knot counts as one stitch. Cast on 38 more stitches using the cable cast on technique. You now have 39 stitches. 3 Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand and hold the empty needle in your right hand. Knit across the 39 stitches on your left needle. This is your first row of knitting. 4 Swap your needles so the empty needle is in your right hand and the full needle is in your left. This is called turning your work and you will do this each time you finish a row. 5 Slip the first stitch purl-wise, knit across the 39 stitches on your left needle. Turn your work. 6 Repeat step 5 until your work measures 43cm/16.9 from the cast on edge. (Approx. 165 rows in total.) 7 Cast off your stitches and secure your last stitch. SHELL YEAH BAG

HOW TO MAKE YOUR BAG STRAP If you want to add a strap to your bag follow the instructions below. 1 Using WATG s New Wave Yarn in colour B, start by cutting 8 lengths of yarn 10 metres/32.8 feet long. (If you want a multicolour strap, cut 4 lengths of yarn in colour B then 4 lengths of yarn in another colour). 2 Hold the 8 lengths of yarn together and thread them through the first trigger ring, from front to back. Pull 5.6 metres/18.4 feet of the yarn through the trigger ring. 3 Now thread the longer end of the yarn through the second trigger ring, from front to back. Pull the yarn until the distance between the two rings is 60cm/23.6. 4 Now take this strand through the first trigger ring once again, from back to front. B A 1 2 #WOOLANDTHEGANG

5 A and B are your working strands, 1 and 2 are the strands in the middle that form the core of your strap. 6 Starting directly below the first trigger ring make a square knot over the middle strands using strand A and strand B. 7 Repeat step 6 until you have reached the second trigger ring. 8 Secure your yarn by threading a needle with each strand and bringing them through the centre of the cord for 2.5cm/1. Trim the ends. SHELL YEAH BAG

ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING 1 Lay your bag flat and create a 16cm/6.3 fold in your bag. The right side of the fabric should be facing out. WS RS 16CM/6.3 2 Thread your sewing needle with a strand of yarn, and secure it to the wrong side of the fabric. 3 Sew up the side edges using the straight stitch technique. 4 Finish off your bag by weaving in the ends and folding the top of your flap over. 5 Attach your strap to the bag by inserting each trigger ring to the top of the side seams of your bag. HELP! WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM

THE TECHNIQUES We ve gathered all the info we think you might need right here in this techniques section. We also have video tutorials for the whole lot. See those over at: www.woolandthegang.com/videos THE NEEDLES TIP / POINT SHAFT BOTTOM Knitting uses two identical needles. They are interchangable. You will naturally find a comfortable way of holding your needles as you work. A good place to start is with one in each hand, with the pointy end up. SHELL YEAH BAG

SLIP KNOT 1 2 TAIL TAIL BALL Make a loop at the end of the yarn. Cross the tail end behind the ball end. BALL Pull the ball end up through the loop. 3 4 Place the loop on to one of your needles. Pull on the tail end of the yarn to tighten the loop. #WOOLANDTHEGANG

CABLE CAST ON 1 2 With the slip knot needle in your left hand and the empty needle in your right, insert the tip of the right needle into the slip knot so it sits under the left needle. Wrap the yarn from the ball around the right needle in an anti-clockwise direction so it sits between the two needles. 3 4 Slowly bring the right needle back out of the slip knot, picking up the wrapped yarn in the process. Hold your needles next to each other, with a loop on each. SHELL YEAH BAG

5 6 Take the left needle and put it through the loop on the right needle. Remove the right needle from the loop. You will now have 2 stitches on your left needle. 7 8 Insert your right needle between the 2 stitches on your left needle so it sits under the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle in an anti-clockwise direction so it sits between the two needles. HELP! WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM

9 10 Slowly bring the right needle out from between the two stitches, picking up the wrapped yarn in the process. Hold your needles next to each other. 11 12 Take the left needle and put it through the loop on the right needle. Remove the right needle from the loop. You will now have 3 stitches on your left needle. Repeat steps 7 to 12 to make new stitches. SHELL YEAH BAG

KNIT STITCH 1 2 Insert the tip of your right needle into the first stitch on your left needle, from front to back. Wrap the yarn around the right needle in an anticlockwise direction so it sits between the two needles. 3 4 Slowly bring the right needle back out of the stitch, picking up the wrapped yarn in the process. Use the right needle to slip the stitch off the top of the left needle. 1 knit stitch complete! Repeat as needed. #WOOLANDTHEGANG

TURN YOUR WORK 1 2 At the end of a row, your right needle will be full and your left one will be empty. Swap hands so the full needle is in the left hand and the empty one is in the right. Ready to start the next row. 3 When you start the next row, be sure to go into the first stitch on the left needle. SHELL YEAH BAG

GARTER STITCH Garter stitch means every stitch on every row is a knit stitch. This technique makes a bumpy fabric which is the same on both sides. HELP! WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM

SLIP STITCH (PURLWISE) 1 2 Insert your needle from right to left. Now, slip the stitch off the end of the left needle, keeping it on the right. Thats it :). You have slipped a stitch purlwise. SHELL YEAH BAG

CAST OFF 1 2 Knit 2 stitches. Insert the left needle into the second stitch on the right needle. 3 4 Lift the stitch up and over the front stitch, slipping it off the end of the right needle. You now have 1 stitch on the right needle. #WOOLANDTHEGANG

5 6 Knit 1 stitch from the left needle. You now have 2 stitches on your right needle. 7 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have run out of stitches on the left needle and you have 1 on the right needle. 8 Cut the yarn approx 15cm/6 from the last stitch. Thread the end of the yarn through the stitch on the needle. Remove the needle from the stitch. Pull the end of the yarn to secure. SHELL YEAH BAG

SQUARE KNOT 1 2 B A A B Bring A from right to left, over the middle strands and under B. Now bring B under the two middle strands and through the loop formed by A. Pull on both A and B to tighten them. 3 4 A B B A Bring A from left to right, over the middle strands and under B. Bring B under the two middle strands and through the new loop formed by A. Pull on A and B again to tighten them - you have now made one square knot. HELP! WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM

STRAIGHT STITCH 1 2 Place the two pieces on top of each other, wrong sides touching. Thread your sewing needle with a strand of yarn that is twice the length of the joining edge. Insert your sewing needle through the first stitch of your top piece. Push it through both pieces so it comes out on the right side of the bottom piece. 3 4 Staying on your bottom piece, insert your needle into the next stitch and push it up through both pieces so it comes out on the right side of the top piece. Staying on your top piece, move along one stitch, insert your needle, push through to the bottom piece. SHELL YEAH BAG

5 6 Continue in this way, joining the two pieces by working back and forth between top and bottom pieces. When you reach the end of the work, thread your needle and yarn to the wrong side of the piece and secure by tying a knot or simply weaving in the ends. #WOOLANDTHEGANG

WEAVE IN ENDS 1 2 Thread the end of the yarn through the eye of the sewing needle. Working on the back of your piece, find a horizontal bar in your knitting and thread the needle and yarn under it. 3 4 Travelling horizontally, continue along your piece, following the path of the stitches as you go. Once you have travelled approx. 8cm/3.5, you can remove the sewing needle and trim the end of the yarn. SHELL YEAH BAG
