Rotary is Service Above Self Taking Care of Business It was Monday, March 8, 2010, and the always enthusiastic President Jan Rhees got right to announcements galore: Richard Ackerman told of the new and increased craft awards, adding to the traditional categories (art, ceramics, wood, fashion, photos) some fresh categories (video, art construction, media design), all to recognize the young and abundant talent at Mira Costa..Charlie Steinmetz will be a proud sponsor of the opening of the new library at St. Laurence Brindisi School in Watts.Mike Doell (and just about everyone else) is celebrating Girl Scout cookies.david Harris daughter received a Yale fellowship (Boola boola) and his son is off to work in Cincinnati.Aliyah Levin is joining Westwood Village Rotary, but she can t really let go, and so she is still working on our club projects (President Jan: So we won t miss you yet ).John Van den Akker s son has a State Department scholarship that will send him to Russia, from where he can help John organize the annual Russian visit to our club (May 21 this year).dan Saks son is a teaching assistant at UC Irvine in his sophomore year.susan Adams mom in New York has been in a hospital critical care unit, but is fortunately headed to rehab..fire Captain Scott Ferguson is headed to the Santa Monica Fire Department.Les Silverman, who promises to keep his day job, sang in honor of International Women s Day..$1150, 13 marbles, and still no winner. Music Awards It was a sublime morning, as we listened to the artistry of two MBMS musicians (flute and violin) and two Mira Costa musicians (violin and cello) perform extraordinary (and extraordinarily difficult) solo pieces for our large assemblage, bolstered by a room full of proud parents. Our performers were the first place winners of our club-sponsored music competition, representing four categories: MBMS Band, MBMS Strings, Mira Costa Grades 9-10, and Mira Costa Grades 11-12. Also present were more awardees: the second and third place finishers in each category. Our Vocational Service Director Richard Ackerman organized and MC d all of it, with special thanks to Bob Franko and Beach

Rotary is Service Above Self Business Bank for the gift that allowed us to expand our traditional MBMS competition to the high school level. And the most special thanks of all went to the amazing teachers who devote their lives to this enrichment of their students lives Denise Haslop at MBMS and Peter Park at Mira Costa. We re not only the bestest club in District 528 (OK, 5280 say, when do we get to sing our club song again?), but we have the bestest kids in District 528. So there. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization's ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. A Quiet Revolution of Hope World Community Service has been described as the "quiet revolution of hope." Isn't it time for you to: Reach out to someone who needs help. Develop a relationship with a club in another country. Become acquainted with the customs and culture of a faraway place.

Rotary is Service Above Self Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help June keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make June's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway! Rotary Make-Up Clubs - 12:15pm Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
