Academic Directors BIOGRAPHIES Loren Falkenberg, PhD Associate Dean, Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics Haskayne School of Business Loren Falkenberg has been a faculty member in the Haskayne School of Business for more than 20 years. She teaches business ethics and negotiations. She has actively consulted in the area of CSR; and worked with Talisman on their activities in the Sudan and in developing their first CSR report. She developed the CSR guidelines for the Latin American Petroleum Producers. She has also conducted seminars for pipeline companies, and spoken at numerous professional seminars on CSR. She is regularly contacted by the media for comment on ethical issues, including the CBC, Globe and Mail, and the Calgary Herald. Loren has published in the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Perspectives, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management and California Management Review. As well, she is currently the Section Editor for Case Studies in the Journal of Business Ethics. Loren has won six awards for best papers published in journals or presented at conferences. As well, she has written a textbook, and published chapters in edited books. Her particular research interests are in developing cases examining ethical and social responsibility issues, decision making by senior leaders, and exploring the relationships between companies and not-for-profit organizations Loren is an active contributor to not-for-profit organizations. She was the Chair of the Board of Directors of Calgary Meals on Wheels. Michael J. Robinson, Ph.D., CFA, ICD.D Director, Creative Destruction Lab Rockies Associate Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance, Michael Robinson is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Haskayne School of Business and teaches new venture finance, corporate finance, and corporate governance to undergraduate and MBA students. Michael has published several books and academic research papers that study Canadian capital markets, market efficiency, and methods of raising equity capital for developing firms. His most recent research interests include corporate social responsibility, private equity markets, and the role of a firm s board of directors in growth-oriented firms. He received the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence for the 2005/2006 academic year. Michael s private sector experience includes work as a computer programmer, systems analyst, and venture capitalist. In this latter position, he was the lead investor for several multi-million dollar investments in high technology firms in Western Canada, and served as a director for a number of private investee firms. Michael is the past Chair of the Investment Operations Committee (IOC) of the Investment Management Division (IMD) of Alberta Revenue. The IMD managed over $50 billion of assets on behalf of the Government of Alberta and selected public sector pension plans and during Michael s tenure was transformed from a government department to the Crown Corporation Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). He has also held board positions with the Calgary CFA Society, CGA Alberta, the APEX Supplementary Pension Plan board, and recently completed seven years of volunteer board service for the Glenbow Museum (where he chaired the Audit/Investment Committee). Michael currently serves on the Investment Advisory Committee for the City of Calgary.
Derek Hassay, MBA, PhD Assistant Professor of Marketing Derek Hassay is an Assistant Professor of Marketing. He joined the Haskayne School of Business in 2000 following five years as a faculty member at Lakehead University. He holds a BBA from the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton), an MBA from McMaster University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. Derek teaches sales management to undergraduates, marketing management to both MBA and EMBA students and a variety of executive education courses. His teaching and research interests are in the area of relationship marketing in both B2C and B2B markets. Derek has a long association with the Direct Selling industry in Canada and is an active guest speaker and advisor for a number of U.S. and Canadian firms. In 2006, he received the Circle of Distinction award from the Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF) in recognition of his years of service to the industry and the DSEF. Derek is currently Chair of the Academic Program Committee and is a board member of the DSEF and is also the founder of Selling Smiles 101, an experiential learning project that simultaneously teaches sales and sales management skills while raising money for children s charities. Anne Kleffner, Ph.D. Professor Risk Management and Insurance Anne Kleffner is a Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the Haskayne School of Business. She joined the University of Calgary in 1992. Anne received her BSBA from Creighton University and a Ph.D. in Applied Economics and Managerial Science from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Anne teaches in the undergraduate program in the areas of risk management and property and liability insurance. She also teaches in the Directors Education Program for the Institute of Corporate Directors and in the Global Energy Executive MBA program. Anne s particular areas of research interest include enterprise risk management, insurance regulation, and automobile liability compensation systems. She has published research in The Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, The Journal of Insurance Regulation and The Ivey Business Journal. Anne is an Associate Editor of The Journal of Insurance Issues and is a member of the Risk Theory Society. She is a Past President of the Board for Calgary Meals on Wheels. In her spare time, Anne enjoys hiking, running, and traveling.
Richard Arthurs, CPA, CMA, MBA, CIA, CFE, CIA, CRMA, QIAL Partner, National Leader Governance and Risk Management, Enterprise Risk Services, MNP LLP Richard s current role is focused on providing consulting support and thought leadership in the areas of governance, enterprise risk management, cyber security, data analytics, business resilience, operational effectiveness, forensics, internal audit and controls. He has worked in governance, risk management, finance, accounting and internal audit for over 25 years. For the last four years he was the VP of Risk Management, Internal Audit, and Compliance at AltaLink; Berkshire Hathaway Energy in Calgary. Prior to this he spent 13 years with General Mills Inc. in Canada, USA, and the UK where he overlooked global audit, risk management, SOX compliance, and he was also the CFO of the UK and Ireland. During this time Richard lead audits and risk based projects in over 40 countries. Presently he is the Senior Vice Chair of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Canada Board of Directors and Chairs the National Thought Leadership and Advocacy Committees. Richard has contributed to several governance, risk and audit leading practice articles and publications such as CPA Canada s 20 questions directors should ask about internal audit. In his spare time, he enjoys downhill skiing, golf, cycling and travel with his wife and two children. He has extensive international experience from work and travel to 47 countries to date. Reynold Tetzlaff PwC Reynold is the newly appointed Calgary Office Managing Partner and is also PwC Canada s National Energy Leader. He has been with the firm for 23 years and serves a broad base of public and private clients. As National Energy Leader, Reynold brings extensive knowledge of industry trends and developments to client engagements and has assisted many foreign based companies as they establish operations in Canada. He is a frequent speaker at many PwC-led energy and international investor conferences and forums. In his capacity as Managing Partner, Reynold offers deep connections within the Calgary community. He is on the Patrons Council for Unicef, is active with United Way and also coaches a variety of sports such as soccer and baseball. Reynold is client-service focused with strong industry insight that delivers value beyond the audit to his clients. He has assisted many clients through complex transactions like initial public offerings, including the largest IPO in the Canadian energy sector in 2012, and one of the few energy service IPOs in 2017.
Scott Bandura PwC Scott is a partner in PwC s National and Global Accounting Consulting Services Practice. He is member of PwC s Global Financial Instruments Topic Team and is co-lead of PwC s global Accounting Consulting Services Energy, Mining, and Utilities industry group. Scott has many years of experience in the interpretation and application IFRS & US GAAP and is one of PwC s SEC review partners. Scott has worked in Toronto, London (UK) and currently resides in Calgary. Scott has extensive oil and gas experience and consults on technical accounting issues for some of PwC s largest oil and gas clients. Scott also sits on CPA Canada s Oil and Gas task force and the Alberta Securities Commission Financial Advisory Committee. Scott has a Bachelor of Mathematics and a Masters of Accountancy from the University of Waterloo. He was awarded the Alumni Gold Medal for Excellence in Accounting for his top standing in the Masters of Accountancy Program. Scott is a Canadian Chartered Accountant and CPA and also has a US CPA in the State of Illinois. Wayne Irvine After graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1980, Wayne worked for 12 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers completing his career at the firm as a senior manager in the audit group. In addition to client commitments, he was also responsible for coordinating the firm's inhouse training programs. He taught part-time at the University of Calgary, for the Society of Management Accountants, and for the Institute of Chartered Accountants during his last few years with the firm. In 1992 he commenced his academic career by taking a full-time teaching position at the University of Calgary, and three years later, accepted a tenure-track position at Mount Royal College but continued to teach on a part-time basis at the University of Calgary. He returned to the University on a fulltime basis on January 1, 2007. Since then, Wayne has received over a dozen teaching awards and authored several textbooks and cases. Wayne has continued his involvement with CPA Alberta by instructing courses for CPA exam candidates on behalf of the CPA Western School of Business and also teaches in-house courses for a major accounting firm. He has also taught exam preparation courses for CFA candidates since 1993 and has been involved with Director Education courses for over 10 years.
