When teaching fractions it is important to develop the understanding that 1 one must be partitioned into equal sized parts. This can be achieved through activities in which children determine whether the parts are equal or unequal. Once students understand the concept of equal or unequal they can begin identifying fractions. In first grade this will be the naming the number of equal parts in halves, fourths or quarters (CCSS 1.G.A.3) Careful use of language when talking about fractions is needed to make the transition from the initial fraction concept to the recorded form of common fractions (not required until grade 3). Progression of language - verbal and written Grade 1 Fraction Games 1 out of 4 equal parts or 1 fourth. 1 out of 4 1 fourth OR OR 1 quarter _ 1 4 Using the fraction name 1 fourth at first allows children to see that it is 1 part out of four equal parts. Then introduce the term quarter. Children need a lot of practice at linking the fraction model to the language and symbols in order to gain a sound understanding of fractions. Games 1.
