Ten top tips for coating steel 1. Surface preparation is critical. Thorough cleaning and preparation can increase the life of your paintwork by up to 10 times. No paint can be applied on top of rust with successful long-term results. 2. Follow a recommended paint system to ensure compatibility and adhesion between coats. We re here to advise you on the best system. 3. Use only the recommended thinner. Using the wrong thinner can affect the drying times, gloss level, colour and durability of the coating. 4. Avoid thinning the paint if possible. Thinning reduces the solid content of the paint, giving a thinner film. 5. Stir the paint well before use. If the paint is not properly stirred, defects or colour differences can occur. Using a mechanical mixer is best. 6. Trials save time and money. Always carry out tests to satisfy yourself that the paint system is suitable for your purpose. We offer samples for trials, as well as technical and on-site advice. 7. The durability of a paint film depends of its thickness. Don t guess - use a wet film comb and a dry film tester. 8. Use the most appropriate equipment. An airless sprayer is up to six times faster than brushing and covers twice as well as conventional spray equipment, and wastes less because of minimal overspray. Brushing is better (but slower) than rolling areas you can t spray. 9. Watch the weather. Only paint when the temperature, humidity and dew point is right. 10. Follow the technical and safety data sheets to ensure the most successful and safe results. Calculations Wet Film Thickness (WFT) in microns Dry Film Thickness (DFT) in microns Spreading Rate In m 2 /litre (without wastage) Paint Consumption In litres (without wastage) Price per m 2 (without wastage) Dry Film Thickness x 100 Volume Solids (%) Wet Film x Vol. Solids (%) 100 10 x Volume Solids (%) Dry Film (microns) Dry Film (microns) x m 2 10 x Volume Solids (%) Dry Film x /Litre 10 x Volume Solids Key to application symbols Airless spray Conventional spray Brush Roller Electrostatic spray 2

This is the solid part of the paint which does not evaporate as the paint dries. The higher the % of volume solids, the lower the solvent content, and the further the paint will go e.g. A paint with 56% volume solids will cover 11.2m 2 per litre at 50 microns dry film thickness, while a paint with 40% volume solids will cover only 8m 2. Marathon paints typically have a higher volume solid content than competitors products. 4

Marathon Galvprep A Pre-Treatment wash for galvanized steel Pre-treatment INDUSTRIAL COATINGS Marathon Galvprep is a Mordant Solution that will chemically etch non weathered, untreated galvanised surfaces. It creates a chemical reaction and causes the surface to turn black, which confirms that the surface has been satisfactorily degreased and is prepared for priming. This process allows a paint system to then applied to the galvanised surface. Converts the surface nature of galvanised steel. Blue in. Treats approximately 15m 2 per litre brush, cloth or sponge Marathon Rustcote Water-based rust converter Marathon Rustcote is applied like a primer to rusted surfaces and it converts rust into a protective black layer that seals out moisture and protects against future corrosion. This protective layer that can then be painted over. Instead of the longer process of removing the rust on larger surfaces, Marathon Rustcote is applied over existing rust after simply removing the loose rust. Applying the rust converter is done with either a brush or a roller. A second coat of rust converter will provide a greater level of protection. An optional top coat of oil-based paint is all that is needed to provide outdoor protection to your new surface. Because it s water-based, Marathon Rustcote is environmentally safe, non-flammable, safe to use, and is ideal to apply where blast cleaning or mechanical abrading is not possible. Thinners Surface dry @ 23 ºC Thinners Surface dry @ 23 ºC 5 ltr 15 m²/ltr N/A 1 hour 5 ltr, 20 ltr 8-10 m²/ltr Water 1 hour Easy to use water based solution Converts rust to Iron Phosphate Overcoatable with most primers Saves time and costly preparation marathon coatings ENDURING PERFORMANCE 15

Tips on Concrete Floor Coating Preparation Suitable and sufficient preparation of the concrete surface is critical to ensure the coating adheres properly and gives a satisfactory and long-lasting appearance. The more time and effort you put into preparing the floor before painting, the better the result will be. Old, unpainted and previously painted concreted surfaces Clean the floor thoroughly using detergent and a mechanical scrubber to remove all dirt, grime and other contaminants. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry. Areas badly soiled by oil or grease may need special treatment. A blow torch or other concentrated source of heat can help to bring ingrained grease and oil to the surface. Once the floor is dry, remove all loose concrete and fill any cracks or holes using a suitable filler. Sweep or vacuum clean the floor leaving it free of dust. It is important to establish that the paint you intend to use is compatible with the existing painted surface by painting a trial patch of at least one square metre. Inspect carefully for any adverse reaction such as bubbling or wrinkling. You need only test the first coat. Newly laid concrete floors New concrete floors should be left for at least 28 days before being painted, and should have a maximum moisture content of 5%. A moisture barrier should have been laid below the slab. The surface may need to be abraded to remove any laitance and to give a suitable profile, using abrasive blasting, scabbling or scarifying. Clean the floor thoroughly using detergent and a mechanical scrubber to remove all dirt, grime and other contaminants. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry. Sweep or vacuum clean the floor leaving it free of dust. Power-floated concrete floors Floor coatings will not adhere successfully to smooth, power-floated concrete. The surface will need to be abraded using blasting, scarifying or scabbling. If this is not practicable, treat the floor with an acid etch solution before rinsing thoroughly with clean water and allowing too dry before sweeping or vacuum-cleaning. Choice of Paint System Our technical advisors are available to inspect your floor and recommend a suitable paint system. Your choice will depend on the following: The type of volume of traffic in the area The amount of time you have to paint the floor How long you want the coating to last Your budget Whilst we can estimate how much paint you should need to cover the floor, some surfaces are more porous than others. It is advisable to thin the first coat by 10 20% to promote absorption. Painting the Floor Study the technical Data Sheets before you start, taking careful note of the recommended weather conditions (temperature and dew point) and drying / re-coating times. Some safe source of heating in the area can reduce drying times. Study the safety data sheets, ensuring you have adequate ventilation and appropriate Personnel Protective Equipment such as gloves, coveralls, boots, goggles, vapour masks, etc. Mask off any areas that don t require paint but could come in contact whilst coating. Then take time to work out the area each tin of paint should cover, marking out the area to ensure you achieve the recommended coverage. Stir the paint thoroughly using a mechanical whisk. If you are using two-pack paint, make sure you add the correct hardener in the correct proportions. Watch the pot-life, and only mix as much as you can use in that time. Paint around the edges using a wide brush. While the edges are still wet, paint the inside area using a double-armed paint roller on an extension pole, and a paint tray. Work methodically and systematically to ensure even and consistent coverage. Once the whole floor is covered, leave the paint to dry for as long as the data sheet recommends, before applying the second and subsequent coats in the same way. Leave the floor to cure fully as recommended in the technical data sheet before allowing normal traffic. 16
