LEGISLATION COMMITTEE Beth Moore, Chair Brooke Archila On April 8, 2014, a Pay Equity Day Event was co-sponsored by the Hopkins County Business and Professional Women s organization and representatives of Murray State University and Madisonville Community College Humanities Department. A Panel Presentation included Mayor Jenny Sewell (Dawson Springs), City Councilwoman Hannah Myers (Madisonville), and Property Valuation Administrator Margaret Brown (Hopkins County). Dr. Susan Edington of Murray State University welcomed attendees and acted as the moderator of the panel, with some general questions concerning past experience in being one of the few elected females in government positions, experience with pay inequality issues, concerns about gender equality, and other issues. After the presentation, attendees remained to eat dinner and network with colleagues. The event was held at 51 on Main Restaurant in Madisonville, with approximately 20 people attending. Questions were also taken from those who attended the event, in addition to the questions composed by the Women s Studies Class at Madisonville Community College. Information was presented that stated as of 2012, women earned 76 cents for each $1.00 that men earned in wages in the state of Kentucky. The gap is more exaggerated for most women of color Latina women and African American women. The gap has not closed in any substantial way in the last 50 years. Equal pay for women raises family income and the entire family benefits from equal pay for men and women. At this rate, equal pay for women and men will not even be close for 50 more years!
