Eighty-eight women have served you as President since I am a fan of history and I was pleased to note that a woman from Danville was State President in The role of women in the work world has definitely changed in the 97 years since BPW was chartered in Kentucky. Many historians would say that women have come a long way in all these years and we have through the efforts of so many. We all know there is more to do to bring equal opportunity and benefits to women today and for all women in the years to come. We can t lose sight of our goals as set out in our platform. When we work to accomplish these goals we will improve the lives of women. We will also improve the lives of all those around us. Women s success directly affects the success of their families and their communities. In this year, do what you always do to contribute to your businesses, community organizations, schools and churches. Continue to take care of yourselves, keep those steps up and explore other ways to treat yourselves for your physical, mental and spiritual health. But, I have a new task for you. Make time to socialize with each other. Have fun together. Share some time with each other when you are not doing the business of your club or your professional life. These interactions between women have served to comfort, enrich, engage and encourage our lives through all of history. During the Civil War, women used their hands to provide comfort and support to their sons, husbands, fathers and friends. Through the sewing of thousands of quilts, women both served the war effort and supported each other. At a time when basic family needs were provided almost solely by women, these women reached out to those who needed more and shared of their work for a greater good. For those of you who took a quilt block kit at the State Conference, please take the time to complete it, give it away and share the story with me. Write it down and send it to me. I have a few more kits for those who may wish to participate. The experience may seem to be a small gesture, but I think you will find it a rewarding one. Please feel free to contact me through the year with questions, concerns and ideas. Let s make it a fun one!
