Our 2017-2018 Board of Directors IIA Canada is guided by our Canadian Board of Directors. IIA Canada operates as a virtual institute, with support and many services provided by its larger North American body headquartered in the USA, but with responsibility for advocacy efforts, programs, services, and budget relating to Canadian members. The close and collaborative relationship between IIA Canada and IIA North America ensures that Canadian members receive all the benefits from the North American organization while receiving enhanced benefits from a Canadian perspective. Richard Arthurs, CPA, CMA, MBA, CIA, CFE, CRMA, QIAL Chair Richard is a Partner and MNP s National Data and Information Dynamics Leader, based in the Calgary office. Prior to joining MNP, Richard served as the Director of Internal Audit and Risk Management leader for General Mills Inc. in Minneapolis, USA. Most recently, he was Chief Audit Executive and Vice President of Risk Management and Compliance for AltaLink, A Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company. Richard is a currently a member of the IIA Canada Board and is the Chair of the Advocacy Committee. He helped start the IIA Canada Thought Leadership Committee prior to joining the board. Also, Richard was an active IIA member at the Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Twin Cities Chapter in the US from 2002 until 2012. Richard has over 25 years of professional experience. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), qualifying as a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) in 2003, and holds the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) designations. He was the first Canadian to receive the Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership (QIAL) designation.
Jeff Erdman, CIA, CRMA Past Chair Jeff leads the global internal audit and risk management function for Finning. In his role he has overall responsibility for Finning s global risk management and internal audit team. Prior to joining Finning, Jeff was a partner in Deloitte s enterprise risk practice based in Vancouver where he led its business risk solutions area. Jeff is a currently Chair of the Institute of Internal Auditor s (IIA s) Canadian Board and former member of the IIA s North American and Global Boards. He s also a current member of the IIA s global advocacy committee. Jeff has over 22 years of professional experience having served in public practice and industry and has experience with a variety of sectors in the areas of enterprise risk management, governance and internal audit. Jeff is a frequent speaker on the topics of control, risk and governance and has presented for the IIA and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC. Jeff is a Chartered Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Information Systems Auditor and Certified Information Systems Security Professional. Fern Cyr, CIA Fern has over 30 years of oil and gas experience in a variety of senior leadership roles. Her current position is the General Auditor of Imperial Oil Limited, one of Canada s largest integrated energy companies, with ExxonMobil Corporation as the majority shareholder. Fern brings demonstrated strengths in leadership, strategic thinking and risk management. She has international experience, which includes executive financial positions in the U.K., as well as the global audit training manager for a large corporation. Over her career, she has played a key role in a number of strategic teams resulting from reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions. Fern has been an active leader in risk-based auditing and enterprise risk management for the past twelve years. In addition to an executive MBA from the Haskayne Business School, University of Calgary, Fern holds the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designations.
Guy Desrochers, CIA, CRMA Since 2012, Guy has been Vice-President, Internal Audit at Québecor Média Inc., a leader in Telecommunications, Media, and Sports & Entertainment in Québec. Guy has over 35 years experience with major enterprises such as Pratt & Whitney Canada, Bombardier Aerospace, and Molson Coors Brewing Company. Guy has spent half of his career in internal audit where he has built and led the internal audit functions for Molson Coors in Canada. He has also led several Finance groups within these corporations, and has been responsible for a major ERP Finance implementation. Guy served on the IIA Montreal Chapter Board between 2008 and 2013, and was President of the Executive Committee from 2011 to 201 David Helberg, CIA, CRMA David is a widely recognized and respected senior governance, risk, and audit leader. He has been a coach, mentor, and trusted business advisor to numerous professionals and a frequent lecturer on the topics of internal audit, ethics, and compliance. David holds the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designations, Along with a broad experience in providing assurance and advisory services with one of the world s leading professional services firms and with large publicly traded organizations, David has several years of marketing management experience. In addition to the CIA and CFE, David has earned the certification in Risk Management Assurance from The Institute of Internal Auditors, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Masters of Business Administration. David is the Director, Internal Audit and the Corporate Ethics & Privacy Officer at Canadianbased mining company, Cameco, and is also the Canadian District Advisor for the Institute of Internal Auditors. David specializes in the areas of Governance, Corporate Privacy, Corporate Strategy and Marketing, Operational Excellence, Internal Audit and Controls, Enterprise Risk Management, and Leadership.
Douglas Johnson, CIA CRMA Doug Johnson is the Chief Audit Executive at Equity Financial Trust Company where he has been since 2014. Doug is a CPA/CA, a CIA, and a CISA. Prior to Equity, Doug has held senior roles in Governance, Risk, Compliance and Internal Audit with CIBC; Aviva Canada; and RBC. He is an alumnus from EY and obtained his Master of Accounting designation from the University of Waterloo. Doug has always been passionate about understanding business processes and how they are aligned to achieve strategic objectives. He believes that strong internal audit departments are a cornerstone to good corporate governance. On a personal note, Doug is married and has two grown children. He works in Toronto and resides in Oakville, Ontairo. Jayson Kwasnik, CPA,CA, CIA, CCO Jayson is a senior-level executive in governance, risk management, audit and compliance. He has over 20 years experience working with public, high growth international companies in the consumer products, entertainment, transport and mining industries. Jayson is currently responsible for the global internal audit and compliance requirements of Dorel Industries Inc. in Montreal, Canada. Prior to this, he was with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu s Growth Solutions practice in Sydney, Australia. Jayson is the current Chair of the Learning and Development Committee of IIA Canada. Mr. Kwasnik also serves as the Vice-Chair of the Learning Solutions Committee of the North American Board of the IIA and is a certified facilitator for its program delivery. Over the last 30 years, Jayson has served on numerous not-for-profit and political boards and was most recently, the official agent for Canada s 23rd Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Justin P.J. Trudeau.
Daniel Lebel, CIA, CCSA, CFSA, CGAP, CRMA Daniel has been the Chief Audit Executive (CAE) at the University of Quebec in Montreal for the past six years. He is also the President at the Centre for the Innovation in Audit International inc., promoting and coaching future CIAs in America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle- East. Daniel encourages new «out of the box» techniques for Internal Auditors and is often volunteers in Africa and Haiti to promote the use of good governance. Dena Palamedes, CIA, CCSA, CRMA Dena has worked in numerous federal departments for more than thirtysix years. Her experiences are varied and include: managing the structural transformation at Transport Canada in Civil Aviation; leading a team of auditors who reported to Parliament on federal hiring practices; recruitment and development of the government Internal Audit community; and providing authoritative internal audit professional guidance to federal departments. Other experiences include internal audit and financial roles in Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, Employment and Immigration, and in National Defence. Dena received a BA with a concentration in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in London. She holds CPA, CMA, CIA, CCSA, CFE and CRMA certifications. Dena is also an IIA Facilitator. In December 2016, she retired from the position of Chief Audit Executive (CAE) and Director General, Internal Audit and Program Evaluation for the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), in Ottawa, Canada. Dena currently consults in Internal Audit and program evaluation in the Canadian Federal Public Administration.
Katherine Palmer, CIA, CCSA Kathy is the City Auditor for the City of Calgary, leading a team of audit and investigation professionals since June 2013. Kathy brings to her role over 25 years of global internal audit and risk management experience gained from multi-industries including Energy, Mining and Canadian Banking. Kathy is passionate about the positive impact and value provided by the auditing profession. She is a lifelong learner who successfully obtained her Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certification in Control Self- Assessment (CCSA), and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designations. Recognizing the importance of effective board governance and to fully contribute in her role as a director for the IIA Canada Board, she obtained her Chartered Director designation from the Directors College through McMaster s University in 2018. Her academic education includes Bachelor of Arts from University of Western Ontario, Bachelor of Education from Nipissing University College, and an Executive MBA, from Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario. Kathy devotes any personal time to new travel adventures within eastern and western Canada and sharing life lessons with her grandson. Archie Thomas, CIA Archie R Thomas is a Consulting Internal Auditor in governance, risk, control, quality and training. He has worked in fifteen countries in mining, energy, utilities, retail, healthcare, education and government. He is on the Advisory Council of ClearView Strategic Partners Inc, on the faculty of The Directors College and an Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Distinguished Faculty Member. Archie a qualified Quality Assessor/Validator and has led over 25 assessments of internal audit activities across Canada and overseas. He was editor and contributing writer of the IIA Research Foundation's Essentials: World Class Tools for Building an Internal Audit Activity. Archie is a Director and Vice-Chair Finance and Risk of IIA Canada and is a member of the Global IIA s Professional Responsibility and Ethics Committee. He is a Past Director of the Global IIA and served as chair of its Audit, International Relations and Quality Committees. He has received the Global IIA's Victor Z Brink Award for Distinguished Service, the IIA Canada Lifetime Achievement Award and is an IIA Toronto Chapter lifetime Honorary Member.
Beili Wong, CIA, CPA Beili Wong, Vice President, Audit and Risk, and Chief Audit Executive at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, is a strategic and energetic business executive with over 20 years experience in finance, risk management, and audit. She is responsible for assessing and reporting management of key risks, providing added accountability and transparency, and supporting the achievement of performance targets and strong corporate governance. Beili brings a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluating and improving the design and effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes. Her global working experience includes consulting and audit projects in 18 countries and four continents, with experience in retail, wholesale, logistics, manufacturing operations, and government. Beili has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shanghai University in Shanghai, China and an MBA from Saint Martin's University in Washington State, USA. She is a CPA/CA, CIA, and CISA. Beili also represents Canada and serves on the IIA North American Board and the IIA Global Board.
