Saturday night, November 17, 6 ~ 8 PM... for our 15th Annual Breast Cancer Benefit, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Go to http://www.bcrfcure.org/ to read more about this organization. We chose this Foundation for our donation because of its very low percentage of administrative costs, with over 90% of all donation dollars going directly to research grants and awareness programs. BCRF is the only cancer organization to hold an A+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy. Our goal each year has been to surpass the previous year's total, but perhaps due to the economy, certainly not to the quality and number of donations, last year s $18,000 was considerably below our 2010 ($23,600) and 2009 ($20,000+) totals. And that means that we need your help even more in raising $18,000+ this year and more! So many of you have contributed so unselfishly by donating your incredible handwork to this cause: raising money to find a cure for this dreaded disease. We have dozens and dozens and dozens of beautiful handmade items that I believe will knock your socks off! This event has grown considerably these past 15 years. The first year we raised about $1500. This year our goal is many times that. When it began, it was staffed by the Attic's staff, and still is at Saturday night s party ~ but there are so many of you now who volunteer your time to help make this happen. It wouldn't happen without you, most especially these three ladies: For weeks Angelica, Carol, and Sheri have been spending their Fridays in our classroom recording/registering the entries, numbering them, displaying them on the garland and in glass-enclosed boxes, and then photographing them for all of you to see ~ and BID ON! More volunteers are needed on Friday evening, November 16, to move all of the items to the Gathering Place starting between 4:00 & 4:30 PM. We will serve pizza and refreshments and, of course, chocolate to the helpers. Please call if you can help. How to Bid I have included what the committee of volunteers established as a Minimum Opening Bid (MOB) or the latest bid to beat, but please know that the items frequently go for many times the amount of the opening bid. Because we really aren't set up for ongoing long-distance bidding on items, if you see something that you really want, you may ensure your getting it by placing what you regard as a "Buy It Now" bid, i.e., one that may discourage others from outbidding you, knowing that all the proceeds go to a very worthy cause. And, of course, you may contact us again to place a higher bid. In years past, bidders have, for example, selected an item or items that they really want and, based on their budget, placed bids of, say, $200 or $300. When you place a bid, please provide telephone number(s) and credit card information, although we truly prefer you to send your check for your successful bid items. If you wish, you may make your check for more. And some of you simply send a donation via a check payable to BCRF, to include in our event total! Payment is preferred by check, made payable to BCRF. However, we will process your bids by credit card, if necessary; thus, the reason we need your credit card on file for all qualified bids. And on Saturday evening, November 17, from 6-8 PM final bids will be placed while you enjoy some delicious Seasonal treats and refreshments. It's a very festive and fun evening, and we hope you plan to be with us. Until then you may place your bids, either by e-mail or by phone (toll-free at 1.888.94-ATTIC/1.888.942-8842).

THE ATTIC! PAGE 2 Kudos to Alice! There are so many people who contribute to the success of this event, including hundreds of needleworkers from around the globe whose work you are about to see, but there is one generous and kind woman who is, I know, uncomfortable receiving any kind of recognition, but I know that you d want to know that this breast-cancer survivor, as she has done each year for the past number of years, has made and donated the first 50 items that you are about to see. I know you will agree that she is an incredibly gifted needlewoman, a survivor whose gift with her needle is an inspiration to all of us. Thank you, Alice, for your unselfish donation of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hours of needlework. All of us admire not only your strength, courage, and tenacity in beating this disease but your unparalleled talent and generosity in producing and donating your eclectic group of items for this event. As you will see as you view these donations, Alice alone is responsible for raising thousands! And this is an annual gift that she gives to this Benefit. I m sure you re not surprised to learn that she s already working on next year s donations. This year the Silent Auction, with the help of dear Tess and her friends, will again be held at The Gathering Place, 1837 West Guadalupe Rd., Mesa, formerly known as Abbey Gardens Teahouse. It s conveniently located a mile east of Loop 101 on Guadalupe Road. Final bidding (with wonderful Costco-prepared hors d'oeuvres and refreshments) from 6 ~ 8 PM on Saturday night, November 17. Bidding closes promptly at 8 PM. Mark your calendars now and plan to be with us for our 15th Annual BCRF Benefit ~ and help raise funds for breast cancer research!
