The Lyran Star Empire The Lyrans are a race of fierce feline aliens who inhabit a 21 county Empire. The 21 st county is the homeworld while four counties are duchies, ruled by a duke instead of a count. The Lyrans share a strong enmity with the Kzinti. Indeed, there is a striking aesthetic similarity between the Lyrans and the Kzinti, but it is one that most people would be wise not to mention in front of either of these aliens. The Lyrans also have a dislike of the Hydrans, who they once subjugated. In a cruel twist of fate, the Lyran ESG is perhaps the best weapon for dealing with the much vaunted Hydran fighters. However, the Hydran hellbore also reaps some revenge for the Hydrans by meddling with the ESG field. The Lyrans share a tentative relationship with the Klingons, another race who also subjugated the Hydrans, and are seemingly indifferent to the Federation. However, in the General War, the Lyrans joined with the Klingons and fought in major conflicts with the forces of the Federation. Lyrans ships are generally well balanced and designed, but can suffer from serious power issues from time to time, even to the point of some refits being to add an APR reactor to a vessel. The primary heavy weapon of the Lyrans is the disruptor (possibly shared or stolen from the Klingons), but it there Expanding Sphere Generator (ESG) technology which strikes fear into the heart of their enemies, particularly certain unfortunate Hydran pilots. The ESG makes Lyran ships very hard to attack with any type of ordnance. Its main drawback is the amount of power it requires to operate, especially on slightly underpowered Lyran vessels. Lyran vessels are typified by very wide fire arcs, but weak rear shielding pre-refit and slightly slower speeds due to power issues.
Lyran weapons rules Disruptors The disruptor is a fast firing weapon, which is more akin to a phaser than a photon torpedo. Though the UIM and DERFACS technologies were developed by the Klingons, they were quickly copied by the Lyrans, Kzinti and Orions. The Lyrans use the disruptor as a primary offensive weapon. -Disruptor bolts use the gunnery table, just like phasers. However, when rolling, shift one column to the left to represent the extra power of disruptors over phasers. -This is cumulative with any other bonuses or penalties. The Expanding Sphere Generator (ESG) The Expanding Sphere Generator allows the Lyran vessel to project a hollow sphere of energy around a Lyran vessel that allows it to destroy incoming ordnance and fighters. It can also be used to brutally ram enemy ships, but is primarily a short ranged defensive weapon. -The Lyran expanding sphere generator is activated during the Lyran shooting phase. -The Lyran ship may choose from four radii. Remember, measure from the stalk. -As a general rule of thumb, the smaller the radius, the stronger the field: Radius Range Strength Radius 0 Base 2+ Radius 1 5cm 3+ Radius 2 10cm 4+ Radius 4 15cm 5+ Radius 5 20cm 6+ -Ordnance and ships within this range are hit once. The strength shown for the field is the dice roll required to cause damage at that range. Roll for each missile in a salvo separately. Lyran ships are hit too. -ESGs will often have a firepower rating greater than one. Where this is the case, you may fire each ESG separately, at a different radius. -The ESG will have absolutely no effect on plasma torpedoes Lyran ESG fields interact strangely with the Hydran hellbore: -If a Lyran ship which has fired an ESG in the last turn is hit by a hellbore, roll a d6 for every hellbore fired at the Lyran vessel. You may fire as many hellbores at the Lyran ship as are available. -On a 5+, the field collapses. -If a ship has suffered an ESG collapse, for every additional 6+, a point of damage is caused. -This may not be absorbed by shields. -If any hits go critical, they must damage the ESG generator, as if that result had been rolled on the critical hit chart. NB: It can be assumed that the Lyran ESG will still be active in the opponent s turn, but that all damage was done during the Lyran phase. ESGs do not affect line of sight. They may be shot through as normal by weapons used during the shooting phase, with the above exception.
Lyran Frigates Vessels of the Lyran Star Empire Lyran Cheetah Frigate (FF) 50pts The Cheetah frigate was ideal for police and patrol duties, with a fantastic size to firepower ratio, but its small chassis meant it was too vulnerable in fleet combat to be seriously considered. As such, it became the base for the Alleycat War Destroyer. Lyran Destroyers Lyran Alleycat War Destroyer (DW) 70pts The Alleycat was converted from the Cheetah. A general strengthening of the hull made it more durable, and it enjoyed a small increase in firepower. Very of these few ships received the P-Refit, but those ones that did benefited greatly from it. Lyran Light Cruisers Lyran Leopard Destroyer (DD) 90pts The Leopard was an excellent support cruiser and a capable starship. Its hull would be the successful basis for a number of Lyran light cruisers. Lyran Jaguar War Cruiser (CW) 105pts The Jaguar was an improvement over the DD hull. It had a marginal increase in firepower, but initially suffered from power issues. This was rectified by further refits. Lyran Heavy Cruisers Lyran Panther Light Cruiser (CL) 150pts An adequate light cruiser, the Panther eventually made way for the more formidable Wildcat battlecruiser. The production lines that made the CL were easily adapted to this end. It was an attempt to produce heavier hulls without drawing away from Lion production. The Wildcat is technically a cruiser, but it successfully fills the role of a dreadnought too, with less of the bureaucracy. Dorsal Phaser-1 45cm 4 All Lyran Hellcat Heavy Battlecruiser (BCH) 280pts This improvement over the Wildcat was an attempt to keep on a par with the new Kzinti BCH and the Federation battlecruisers. The Hellcat added little in terms of firepower, but its energy output and other factors were greatly improved upon. Panicked by the launch of the Federation DN, and the imminent Klingon C8, the Lyrans quickly settled on the Lion design. Fortunately, it proved to be an excellent choice. As such, the Gir DNH refit was implemented; pushing the DN hull to the upper limit of what was thought possible. Lyran Battleship Lyran Cave Lion Battleship (BB) 500pts The designers commissioned to build the DN were later recalled to design a BB to rival the Klingon B10. It was similar in design to the Lion, but much larger, and pre-built with all refits. It is uncertain of this ship was ever built; Lyran clan politics likely interfered with construction.
