1 MAVE Q CLASS BIRD OF PREY One of two classes designed as replacements for the legendary, Romulan-derived B Rel class Bird-of-Prey/Scout, the new Mave Q class represented a powerful return to form for a naval power which was one of the most feared throughout the 23 rd Century. The post Dominion War era saw the Imperial Defense Force pared down to just three distinct classes (B Rel, Vor Cha and Negh Var) plus a variant (Q ang/ Chancellor an improved version of Vor Cha). Though each had been tried, tested and proven over decades of service and were available in quantity, the force s grievous losses in that conflict prompted calls for increased diversification especially timely given that similar moves were being undertaken by the Federation Starfleet, Romulan Imperial Navy and the Cardassian Guard. The first all-new class to be produced was neither big, nor small instead, fulfilling a request from the Klingon High Command for a maneuverable, well-armed frigate a ship type, that as with Starfleet, had been somewhat neglected over the years. The resulting design that emerged from the famed Mastocal shipyards retained the classic shape of B Rel (and its larger K Vort class offshoot), but larger, with a reduced profile and updated aesthetics. 263 meters in length, it had a massive 361-meter wingspan that ranked 3 rd behind the 552m figure of K Vort and 911m figure of the Romulan Norexan class. As with her older cousins, Mave Q s warp coils were housed in large, blocky housings situated dorsally on either side of the main body. A single impulse engine was housed between them, along the centerline, with prominent RCS thruster assemblies positioned further out on the wings. Massive heavy disruptors (Mark XVI models) occupied traditional spots on each wingtip, while a single torpedo launcher was positioned forward, embedded within the nose. Two more standard (Mark XII) disruptors occupied positions on the forked hull extensions flanking the nose making the choice to oppose one of these ships a risky one. Also like B Rel, Mave Q maintained a minimal compliment rated for just 84 officers & crewmen. Designing Mave Q around a compliment of this size was a deliberate decision, done so that the ship could also facilitate a full range of ground operations by up to a full company (120) of Imperial Guardsmen or Black Staff (Special Ops) Operators. Accordingly, 14 long-range personnel transporters were a key feature. With the retirement of surviving K Vorts following the end of the Dominion War, Mave Q became the largest starship able to operate in planetary atmospheres and land on a variety of planetary surfaces an attribute that became vital when the Empire became embroiled in yet another war, this time against the Typhon Pact. Having entered service in 2380, these frigates along with uprated Chancellor (Vorcha II) class Attack Cruisers were the most modern assets the KDF was initially able to field. As Federation territory served as a buffer between the Empire and its enemies, these ships often saw combat alongside their Starfleet counterparts such as was the case during the war s final battle at Jouret V, which saw the Tzenkethi Militia and Kinshayan Navy decisively routed. Production swelled in the war s aftermath as the empire s infrastructure was in much better shape than its space forces and thus, did not require the massive level of attention that the Federation s did. Naturally, Mave Q s numbers are nowhere near the typical of B Rel at present. Though production will continue for the forseeable future, the KDF plans to diversify its

2 shipbuilding and deployment strategies, meaning one is as likely to see a G-10/Stinger, Korgal or D-90 in typical support, patrol and defensive/offensive roles as they are a Mave Q.

4 Editor s Annotations As a rule, I usually don t do designs unless I can find some good orthos/schematics/blueprints/visuals etc. I came across this design and while the orthos for it are somewhat low quality, I was intrigued enough to go searching around the net for any other possible images and I managed to come up with the two above (obviously not to scale though taking my dimensions into account). So then I started thinking about how to possibly incorporate this into the current Klingon fleet. Their infamous mass production and deployment of designs that are clearly past their prime has been well documented on screen and in print and hasn t really been a serious liability to speak of. The gradual, but pronounced shift towards asymmetric warfare (detailed to some extent in my timeline and other publications) would also seem to remove a great deal of need for a large, imposing naval force. However, with the Federation, Romulans, Talarians and even the Cardassians expanding/diversifying their naval arms, I felt that the Klingons would loose face sooner or later if they didn t keep pace.
