GRIDS & GUTTERS There s a lot to appreciate about the comics medium, especially if you re a graphic designer. Frames, gutters, word baloons, caption boxes, and illustrated sound effects are a handful of the elements a cartoonist can use to create a comic page or strip. As such, the best cartoonists consider how to balance layout, colour/contrast, space vs. counter-space, typography, and most importantly how to convey a story in the most effective way. As a cartoonist, I also consider these problems in my design work. I try my best to present the thousand words in a picture in the clearest and most concise way.
PRINT/ILLUSTRATION : SHAKESPEARE EVENT POSTER PROJECT SPECS: 11 x 18 in To create a compelling event poster to advertise a local Shakespearean production While it s mainly type, the poster s design owes much to the illustrated blades coming from the edges of the page. Inspired by the catalyst for the entire play, these blades all point toward the play s title, written using characters reminiscent of the Roman alphabet during his reign. The rest of the event information was moved to the bottom of the poster, giving the illustration a solid frame.
OUT ITC FENICE ITC Fenice is a variation of the original Fenice, created by Aldo Novarese in 1970. Initially designed for H. Berthold AG type foundry (founded 1858), Fenice was later licensed by ITC in 1980. ITC Fenice is known for its strong vertical stresses and wedge-like terminals. While it also boasts the trademark use of unbracketed erifs, the font also consists of an overall narrow ody frame and tall x-height. ITC Fenice is eat for use in headlines, presenting itself ll in magazine layouts and brochures. Using a three-colour scheme and the same grid for each brochure, I made the type clear and easy to read within a gate-fold style layout.

PRINT/ILLUSTRATION : MUSIC/FINE ART MASHUP EVENT POSTER PROJECT SPECS: 11 x 17 in To advertise a concert event using an historical design era as an influence I found great similarities between the helmets of Guy de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk) and the Rocketeer an art-deco era comic hero created by Dave Stevens and decided to use that to my advantage. As well as taking cues from LeMans race posters from the era, I chose to merge mechanical and lengthy geometric shapes with vibrant and neon-like colour.
PRINT/ILLUSTRATION : PERFUME & PRIMER CAPS GRAPHIC NOVELS PROJECT SPECS: 5.5 x 7.75 in graphic novels (approximately 120 pages each) To create long-form comic books with both a compact size and a vibrant 90s-action-comedy look. The comic is inspired by a lot of 90s action film and cartoon elements both Western and Japanese animation and much of the books designs owed a lot to that. I implied a constant use of vibrant colours and neon effects in the cover art, complimented with bold, blocky fonts.

MARKETING : MR. ROBOT TYVEK WALLET PROJECT SPECS: 4 x 3 in Tyvek wallet (assembled, when folded), 8x3 in insert card To provide an example of a customizable product using a customer s branding elements. This job was given to me with a very simple instruction of designing something to my own discretion. Knowing that the wallet was being proofed for a television show that attempts to depict hackers in a more realistic form, I decided to create something that looked stark and bold while keeping some simplicity to the design. peter n. tri nh graphic d esign portfolio

TYPE DESIGN : TRINH TYPE SANS PROJECT SPECS: includes regular, bold, italic and bold italic typefaces To create a font that works well in both text documents and comic strips. Occasionally, I ll experiment with making fonts without planning based on my personal illustration style. The idea behind Trinh Type Sans was to create a tall font family that would work well as both large type and body type. As well, it works well as text for captions, both in article layouts and in caption boxes in comics.
