Flutterby #118 Jacquelynne Steves All seam allowances are ¼. Sew RIGHT sides of fabric together unless otherwise specified. WOF= width of fabric. Cut fabric into strips perpendicular to selvedges. Trim off selvedges. Cutting Instructions: Pink Tone-on-Tone Cut 16 squares, each 5 ¾. Cut each square into quarters diagonally to yield 4 triangles. You will have a total of 64 triangles (for blocks) Peach Tone-on-Tone Cut 8 squares, each 5 ¾. Cut each square into quarters diagonally to yield 4 triangles. You will have a total of 32 triangles (for blocks) Green Tone-on-Tone Cut 8 squares, each 5 ¾. Cut each square into quarters diagonally to yield 4 triangles. You will have a total of 32 triangles (for blocks) Brown Background Print Cut 10 strips, each 2 x wof (for borders) Stripe Cut 4 strips, each 5 x wof (for border) Beige Solid Cut 16 squares, each 6 7/8 (for block centers) Cut 4 squares, each 5 (for border corner blocks) Making the Blocks: Sew a pink triangle to a green triangle as shown at right. Continue with remaining green triangles so that you have 32 pink/green triangle units. Press seams to pink. Sew a pink triangle to a peach triangle as shown at right. Continue with remaining peach triangles so that you have 32 pink/peach triangle units. Press seams to peach. Sew pink/green triangle units to opposite sides of the 6 7/8 beige squares as shown below. Press seams toward triangles. Sew pink/peach triangle units to remaining sides of 6 7/8 beige squares as shown at right. Press seams toward triangles. This will yield a block that is 9 ½ unfinished (9 finished.) Make 16. 1
Applique: Flutterby #118 Jacquelynne Steves You will now need to applique your pieced blocks, and the squares for the corners of the borders. Trace patterns onto paper side of fusible web, leaving about ¼ between each shape. Cut out, leaving about 1/8 around each shape. Iron to WRONG side of fabrics, cut out on line and remove paper backing. Referring to cover photo, arrange shapes on beige squares of pieced blocks (blocks B,C,D,E), noting areas of overlap, and noting placement of triangles (pink triangles at top and bottom, peach and green triangles on sides.) Iron in place according to manufacturer s instructions. Arrange the smaller butterflies (for Block A) on the (4) 5 squares for the border corners (note that the butterflies are arranged on point), iron to squares. Machine appliqué, using zigzag, buttonhole, or other desired stitch. Referring to cover photo and diagram at right, sew blocks together into rows. Sew rows together. Borders: (Borders are calculated mathematically. Measure across the center of your quilt and cut length of borders accordingly.) Cut 2 of the brown print strips to 36 ½ long. Sew to sides of quilt. Press toward borders. Cut 2 of the brown print strips to 39 ½ long. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Press toward borders. Cut the 4 stripe strips to 39 ½ long. Sew 2 strips to sides of quilt. Press towards borders. Sew a 5 beige appliquéd block (Block A) to either end of the 2 remaining stripe strips (see cover photo); press toward stripe border. Sew to top and bottom of quilt, press toward borders. 2
Flutterby #118 Jacquelynne Steves Piece the remaining brown print strips together into 1 long strip. See diagram below. From the long strip, cut 2 strips that are each 48 ½ long. Sew to sides of quilt. From the long strip, cut 2 strips that are each 51 ½ long. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Quilt as desired. Bind with peach fabric.
