YACHTS - POLYESTER INHOUD De IJssel Coatings B.V. develops, produces and distributes since 1930 a complete range of coatings and construction materials for new building, repair and maintenance of yachts and pleasure craft. The materials in this product range are carefully adjusted and matched thus offering optimal protection against the influences of sun, wind and water. Our products are characterized by their durability and simplicity of use. The product range includes materials for the protection of steel, aluminium, polyester and wood. The products can be divided in following product groups: IJMOPOX Low-solvent, two-component epoxy products. VARIOPOX Epoxy construction materials, fillers and coatings, solvent free. POLTIX Repair materials and fillers based on unsaturated polyester. DOUBLE COAT With Double Coat, surfaces made of polyester, steel, aluminium, wood or epoxy receive a high quality and durable two-component polyurethane coating system, with long-lasting colour and gloss. This publication gives an overview of our standard paint system recommendations for the protection of polyester yachts and pleasure craft: System 0: Polyester osmosis renovation System 1: Polyester osmosis repair and prevention System 2: Polyester below the waterline System 3: Polyester above the waterline System 4: Polyester decks System 5: Polyester superstructure System 6: Polyester interior behind linings, bilges and anchor locker date: January 15

page 1 of 4 0: POLYESTER RENOVATION OF OSMOSIS DESCRIPTION This system describes how to renovate polyester below the waterline of a GRP yacht after osmosis. PRINCIPAL CHARACTERISTICS When polyester below the waterline is severely infested with osmosis, renovation will be necessary. This system is recommended as renovation method for such deteriorated surfaces. This coating system is compatible with most types of anti-foulings. For osmosis repair or osmosis prevention see system 1, Polyester osmosis repair SURFACE CONDITION Polyester gelcoat infested with osmosis, with or without previous coating system. SURFACE PREPARATION 1. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove all contamination such as salt deposits, dirt, grease and other foreign matter, preferably by high pressure water cleaning and with a suitable cleaner; 2. Remove the gelcoat and any old layers of paint and anti-fouling completely. Suitable methods are: Blasting with grit or any other suitable abrasive material: After this procedure surface defects may become visible. Repair these defects before continuing; Mechanical peeling: By means of peeling a fixed thickness is removed from the surface. As a result, the surface will be very smooth. Grit sand the surface with P60 before continuing; Planing with an electrical plane (GelPlane): Avoid cuts. By means of planning a fixed thickness is removed from the surface. As a result, the surface will be very smooth. Grit sand the surface with P60 before continuing; Manual scraping with hot air gun: Low cost method but time consuming; 3. Do not use an angle grinder, this will result in an uneven surface; 4. Grit paper the surface with P60; 5. Rinse the surface with fresh water and liquid soap to neutralize and remove acids; 6. Check the ph of the surface. Repeat rinsing until the surface reacts neutral, not acidic; 7. Leave the surface to dry completely, this can take a few months; 8. Measure the moisture content using a Skipper Plus. An acceptable value is 15 at scale 2; 9. Leave the surface to dry further when the moisture content is too high. MATERIALS AND SPREADING RATES The following materials are used in this paint system: Variopox Plamuur spreading rate depends on condition surface IJmopox HB coating spreading rate approx. 0,5 l/m 2 (osmosis renovation) IJmopox Verdunner spreading rate depends on condition surface Double Coat Ontvetter spreading rate depends on application method Poltix Resin M-EB spreading rate approx. 0,5 kg/m 2 APPLICATION Osmosis renovation, old polyester 1. Check the ph of the surface. The ph should be close to neutral (ph=7). Repeat rinsing when the surface is acidic; 2. Check the moisture content of the surface with a Skipper Plus. Leave the surface to dry when the moisture content is above 15 at scale 2;

page 2 of 4 0: POLYESTER RENOVATION OF OSMOSIS 3. Apply two layers Poltix Resins M-EB. Apply in each layer Poltix Oppervlaktemat. 4. Avoid entrapment of air by de-aerating the wet fiber/resin layer with a de-aeration roller; 5. Apply three to four coats of IJmopox HB coating to a total dry film thickness of 375 µm (minimum spreading rate approx. 0,5 l/m 2 ). Gritpaper between each coat. 6. Apply an anti-fouling when required. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Repair of GRP Damaged areas and dents may be repaired using a filler. Each damage, scratch or pinhole should be treated carefully. Scratches may be abraded and filled. Dents and cracks should be gritpapered until the laminate is exposed. After curing of the filler the surface should be cleaned with Double Coat Ontvetter. Suitable fillers are: Variopox Plamuur; Variopox LG plamuur; Variopox Finishing plamuur. Previous paint: one or two component? When it is not known if the previous coating system was based on one- or two component products, this can determined with a simple test. Soak a small piece of cloth in Double Coat Ontvetter and leave this for 15 minutes on the surface. Remove the cloth and check the surface. When the previous paint has not dissolved, is not softened and cannot be easily be removed it is most probably a two component paint. Only then it is possible to apply a fresh coat of two component paint. Anti-fouling Most types of anti-fouling may be applied on top of IJmopox HB coating. Overlap with coating system above the waterline Please note IJmopox ZF primer or Double Coat cannot be applied over an anti-fouling. This is important at the overlap between the below- and above water area. Durability and surface preparation The durability of any paint system depends on a number of variables, amongst others: total dry film thickness, method of application, skill of labour, the conditions during which the coating is applied and cured, the exposure conditions during service and the preparation of the surface. Insufficient surface preparation might lead to blistering and loss of adhesion. Sanding A durable adhesion will be obtained by thorough preparation of the surface. This may be achieved by sanding the surface. Sanding is also necessary when the time elapsed between application of each coat exceeds the maximum overcoating interval. During application of the finishing coats, we recommend to use for each coat a finer grit paper. The table gives the recommended grit sizes:

page 1 of 4 1: POLYESTER OSMOSIS DESCRIPTION This system describes how to repair or prevent osmosis of polyester below the waterline of a GRP yacht. PRINCIPAL CHARACTERISTICS The repair or prevention of osmosis of areas below the waterline may de required because of the of the following reasons: Prevention of osmosis: The polyester shows no visible signs of osmosis and the gelcoat is in good condition. To prevent osmosis in the future, a coatings system is applied; Repair of osmosis: The polyester shows various degrees of osmosis and needs repairs. Osmosis repair is usually only recommended for professionals. The selection of the system (prevention or repair) depends on the condition of the surface. Osmosis prevention is recommended for new yachts and existing yachts still in good condition. SURFACE CONDITION 1. When the gelcoat is in good condition and no micro blisters are visible in the area under the waterline, the system for osmosis prevention may be used. 2. When small, localized areas of blistering are visible on the surface, these may be repaired with the repair system. Next, the complete are is treated with the prevention system. 3. When more than 50% of the total area is covered with blisters, it is recommended to repair the complete area according the osmosis repair system. SURFACE PREPARATION Prevention of osmosis, not yet treated polyester 1. Grit paper the surface; 2. Remove all dust and residue from the surface; 3. Degrease the surface and carefully remove all deposits of mould release agents using Double Coat Ontvetter. Prevention of osmosis, already treated polyester 1. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove all contamination such as salt deposits, dirt, grease and other foreign matter, preferably by high pressure water cleaning and with a suitable cleaner; 2. Remove old layers of one component paint and anti-fouling completely (even when these are in a good condition); 3. Remove old layers two component paints with insufficient adhesion, preferably by grit paper; 4. Previous layers of two component paint which have good adhesion and which are in good condition should be abraded, preferably by grit paper; 5. Let the surface dry, this can take a few months; 6. Grit paper the surface; 7. Remove all dust and residue from the surface; 8. Degrease the surface thoroughly using Double Coat Ontvetter. The surface should be dry and free from grease, loose particles and other contamination. Repair of osmosis 1. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove all contamination such as salt deposits, dirt, grease, acidic residue of osmosis and other foreign matter, preferably by high pressure water cleaning and with a suitable cleaner; 2. Remove all layers of previous coatings including the gelcoat by means of blasting, sand washing, Hot Vac system or peeling. Grit sanding is only recommended to remove blisters from small areas (spot repair);

page 2 of 4 1: POLYESTER OSMOSIS 3. Let the surface dry, this can tak a few months. It is possible to measure the moisture content using electronic moisture meters such as a Skipper Plus. When using a moisture meter on polyester, always compare the readings above the waterline with the reading obtained below the waterline. An alternative method to check the moisture content is to attach a sheet of plastic foil with tape to the surface. When after 24 to 48 hours no condensation is visible behind the sheet, the area is sufficiently dry. MATERIALS AND SPREADING RATES The following materials are used in this paint system: Variopox Injectiehars spreading rate approx. 0,3 l/m 2 Variopox Plamuur spreading rate depends on condition surface IJmopox HB coating spreading rate approx. 0,5 l/m 2 (osmosis prevention) spreading rate approx. 0,7 l/m 2 (osmosis repair) IJmopox Verdunner spreading rate depends on condition surface Double Coat Ontvetter spreading rate depends on application method APPLICATION Prevention of osmosis, new and treated polyester 1. Repair scratches, cracks and other damaged areas with Variopox Plamuur. Gritpaper surface after curing. 2. Apply three to four coats of IJmopox HB coating to a total dry film thickness of 375 µm (minimum spreading rate approx. 0,5 l/m 2 ). Gritpaper between each coat. 3. page 1 of 4 3: POLYESTER ABOVE THE WATER LINE DESCRIPTION This system describes how the area above the waterline of a GRP yacht may be coated with a two component polyurethane system. PRINCIPAL CHARACTERISTICS This coating system may be applied directly to properly pre-treated gelcoat and is scratch resistant, resistant to a wide range of chemicals and provides excellent colour and gloss retention. SURFACE CONDITION Polyester gelcoat, in good condition. SURFACE PREPARATION New building 1. Degrease the surface and carefully remove all deposits of mould release agents using Double Coat Ontvetter; 2. Grit paper the surface; 3. Remove all dust and residue from the surface; 4. Repeat the treatment with plenty Double Coat Ontvetter. The surface should be dry and free from grease, loose particles and other contamination. Maintenance 1. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove all contamination such as salt deposits, dirt, grease and other foreign matter, preferably by high pressure water cleaning and with a suitable cleaner; 2. Remove old layers of one component paint completely (even when these are in a good condition); 3. Remove old layers two component paints with insufficient adhesion, preferably by grit paper. 4. Let the surface dry. 5. Grit paper the surface; 6. Previous layers of two component paint which have good adhesion and which are in good condition should be abraded; preferably by grit paper; 7. Remove all dust and residue from the surface; 8. Degrease the surface thoroughly using Double Coat Ontvetter. The surface should be dry and free from grease, loose particles and other contamination. MATERIALS AND SPREADING RATES The following materials are used in this paint system: IJmopox ZF primer spreading rate depends on condition surface IJmopox Verdunner spreading rate depends on condition surface Double Coat spreading rate approx. 0,3 kg/m 2 Double Coat Kwastverdunner spreading rate depends on application method Double Coat Ontvetter spreading rate depends on application method APPLICATION New, untreated surfaces 1. Surfaces showing micro-porosity should be pretreated with one or two layers of IJmopox ZF primer. Gritpaper between each coat; 2. Apply three coats of Double Coat to a total dry film thickness of 120 µm (minimum spreading rate approx. 0,3 kg/m 2 ). Gritpaper between each coat. Already painted surfaces 1. Repair damaged areas with a suitable filler. Gritpaper surface after curing. 2. Surfaces showing micro-porosity should be pretreated with one or two layers of IJmopox ZF primer. Gritpaper between each coat;

page 2 of 4 3: POLYESTER ABOVE THE WATER LINE 3. Apply three coats of Double Coat to a total dry film thickness of 120 µm (minimum spreading rate approx. 0,3 kg/m 2 ). Gritpaper between each coat. Maintenance Repair damaged areas using the recommendation for already painted surfaces. Apply two coats of Double Coat to the repaired areas to reduce the absorption of the filler, this will also avoid dull areas in the final coat. Suitable fillers are: Variopox Plamuur (lightgreen, excellent water resistance, good sanding properties); Variopox LG plamuur (grey, excellent water resistance, light weight, good sanding properties); Variopox Finishing plamuur (cream, excellent water resistance, good sanding properties); Poltix Superplamuur (grey, rapid curing, excellent sanding properties, for above water only); IJmofix (white, rapid curing, smooth, excellent sanding properties, for above water only); Poltix Vezelplamuur (rapid curing, for larger repairs, to be finished with Poltix Superplamuur or IJmofix, for above water only). Micro-porosity Micro-porosity is a phenomenon which may occur on new and old, weathered gelcoat. Microporosity is visible as small pinholes in the surface. Painting a surface showing micro-porosity with Double Coat might lead to surface defects in the layer of Double Coat. A coat of primer such as IJmopox ZF primer will eliminate surface defects. Haircracks and crackle Small cracks and crackle in the GRP surface are difficult to repair. A filler is difficult to apply as the crack and crackle are too small and too difficult to grit paper. A lasting repair is possible using a generous coat of IJmopox ZF primer (or IJmopox HB coating). Apply the material with a squeegee and rub the primer into the cracks and crackle. Repeat this procedure when necessary. Next, sand the surface and apply the next layer of the paint system. Overlap with coating system below the waterline Please note IJmopox ZF primer or Double Coat cannot be applied over an anti-fouling. Insufficient surface preparation might lead to blistering and loss of adhesion.

page 3 of 4 3: POLYESTER ABOVE THE WATER LINE Sanding A durable adhesion will be obtained by thorough preparation of the surface. This may be achieved by sanding the surface. Sanding is also necessary when the time elapsed between application of each coat exceeds the maximum overcoating interval. During application of the finishing coats, we recommend to use for each coat a finer grit paper. The table gives the recommended grit sizes: Grit paper: P24 P36 P60 P60 P80 P120 P120 P180 P180 P220 P220 P280 P320 P400 P600 Finer then P600 Recommended for: Suitable for steel prior to application of IJmopox ZF primer.
