Manhattan Beach Rotary Club Serving Manhattan Beach Since 1950 Club No. 751 District 5280 Chartered August 9, 1950 www.mbrotary.org Happy On June 16 we ended our Monday meeting with the sounds of Pharrell Williams Happy booming through the speakers behind a prolonged Standing O for President Kathleen. As wonderful as the Demotion was, this was our last Monday breakfast with President Kathleen. What would you get if you crossed a sheep and a kangaroo? A woolly jumper! TODAY S PROGRAM June 30 Wot s In The Box. Return with us to days of yesteryear where men were men the question was Wot s In The Box? Sue Vogl and Mike Schwartz will also give their Craft Talks this morning.
Programs July 7 A New Year Begins. Join us this morning for the first meeting of the new Rotary year with our new president Geoff Bremer. First Husband It was Monday, June 16, 2014, the last day we would see incumbent President Kathleen Terry at the podium. Appropriately enough, Fred Manna, Executive Aide to the President, offered the thought for the day, from Maya Angelou, perfectly describing his bride: It s not just what she said and did as president, but how she made us feel. Twin Clubs It was an unprecedented day for our International Service program and our director, Randy Meadors. With District Governor Doug Baker joining us, we had a formal signing ceremony in which President Kathleen and Ensenada Todos Santos Club President Kory Marquez officially recognized each other s clubs as Twin Clubs and international working partners. President Kory addressed the club, praising his friendship with Randy, describing our joint projects in Baja (solar panels, health projects, orphanages, etc.) and sincerely inviting us to visit his club.
Shannon Ryan As if that were not enough, we then watched six Interact Club members present individual gifts to Shannon Ryan for all her work with them, followed by Rotaract President Nick Ozer, with three of his fellow club members, also thanking Shannon for her work with them. MIG It was a top that kind of morning, as we learned that Magic In Giving, under the leadership of Jim Lambert and Jan Rhees, grossed 150K and netted 120K, putting us back into pre-recession numbers as we face life without the ever-generous folks at Toyota. Club of Excellence We then heard a sort of farewell speech from President Kathleen, in which she remembered the ways in which we carried out the themes she started and ended with: Engagement, Service, Collaboration, Sustainability, Awareness and Fun. To accent just how successful her year was, Governor Doug reminded us of what happened at the District Conference: we were one of three clubs to win the Club of Excellence Award (Governor Doug searched in vain for the banner we received), and we were one of two clubs to receive the Presidential Citation with Distinction. President Kathleen was the sparkplug, he said, but it took this entire club to achieve so much this year.
Perfect Attendance A whole lot of folks had perfect attendance this past year. Here they are: Jim Hallett (30 years), Norm Levin, Randy Meadors, Russ Samuels, Ingo Werk, Geoff Bremer, John Hugunin, Gerry Morton, Russ Rothner, Shannon Ryan, Herb Trachtenberg, Dennis Ridge, Susan Adams, Marc Castellani, Jason Wallace and Les Silverman. Hollywood Ed Kushins introduced Manny Pacheco, who has written about the Golden Years in Hollywood, with a strong American history touch. He even made somewhat of a Rotary connection, telling us that the disabled Lionel Barrymore influenced FDR to take on disability as an issue, eventually leading to the American fight against polio, which Rotary ended up leading on an international level, as well all proudly know. The Weasel July 15 is the next District Breakfast with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Russ Rothner is organizing our attendance..darrell Sperber is doing well, awaiting a bone marrow transplant..vinny Fazzino is also doing well in fact, we all saw him up and about at the Demotion.Kent Caldwell awarded Dennis Morehead (aka The Weasel ) the coveted green jacket for lowest net score at the annual Rotary Masters Tournament. Nick Ozer came in second and Kent third..ken Deemer told us that he and Charlie Steinmetz work with Social Venture Partners and invited people to apply to attend their annual boot camp to train non-profits.
Demotion Herewith, a few Demotion notes: President Kathleen presided in her usual style, highlighted by these awards: Rotarian of the Year Shannon Ryan, Rookie of the Year Mark Burton, and Spirit of Rotary Award winner Jim Bowser, with an emotional Susie Bowser there to accept. Chef Meg Hall catered in her usual style. Kent Caldwell directed still another Oscar-worthy skit in his usual style. Russ Rothner organized everything, herding cats every step of the way. And President Geoff Bremer graciously took over, knowing he has large shoes to fill. Happy We ended this final Monday meeting with the sounds of Pharrell Williams Happy booming through the speakers behind a prolonged Standing O for President Kathleen. As wonderful as the Demotion was, it s this last Monday breakfast with President Kathleen that I ll remember she saved her best for when we were together as a club, conscious to the end of our club s very special fellowship, the place where it all happens. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett The 2013-14 Presidential Citation Our club this year in addition to being awarded Club of Excellence also received the Presidential Citation with Distinction. Way to go!! José Eusebio s Comments to Club President 2013-2014 Todos Santos to Ensenada Rotary Club. Dear Rotarians Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach, It is a pleasure and an honor to be with you sharing this Rotary meeting. In December, District Governor Jesus Benjamin Godinez invited my club to attend a meeting in Valle de Guadalupe, where a Rotary Club of California was going to present a project about installing solar panels on the district 4100, I couldn t attend the meeting but two of my club mates did attend and told me later that my Club was invited to participate in the project. A meeting with Randall Meadors was scheduled, he gave us more details about this great project and a friendship began almost immediately. Today I feel very honored and proud to be his friend, I thank God for our friendship. Randall, best known as Guerito by his new friends in Ensenada, invited us to the orphanage Casa Hogar CBV, to see the way the solar panels were operating, however, we saw much more, we saw children with a great opportunity, the opportunity to change their lives through Manhattan Beach Rotary. We found out that this orphanage was not receiving federal or state support so in April my club scheduled meetings with the Government of the State of Baja, to establish procedures that will allow children in this orphanage receive medical by Seguro Popular for free at any time. I m very excited, in a couple of weeks we will be signing an agreement with the Baja s Health Director that will allow children of Baja California receive medical support and hospital services when required. All this was done because of you Manhattan Beach Rotary Club, you were the ones who made us moved the government to do its job and bring this medical services to the orphans. We want to install solar panels in Casa Gabriel orphan too, last week we took the kids from this orphan to a sport event, Baja s Governor went too, we talk about the Solar Rotary Project and he asked us to send all the information because he is very interested in learning more about this project, about Manhattan Beach Rotary Club Solar System Project. The good relationships between people and organizations make us stronger. I am sure that by formalizing this relationship we will become stronger and we will be able to support those who need us the most. Today is a great day for Todos Santos Rotary Club, it s a privilege for my Club to have a partnership with Manhattan Beach Rotary Club. Now you have a many friends in Ensenada and you have a new family that is gladly waiting for you and will receive you with pleasure. This is Rotary, a large family, which doesn t distinguish races or language, this family has a common language Service above Self.
