FIBER TO FINISH GUILD NEWSLETTER September 2018 From the Weaver's Bench Thankfully the frantic pace of the summer appears to have given way to a more relaxed time! The light and colors of the natural world are beginning to change with the conclusion of summer. The cooler days and nights are greeted with a grateful welcome! Harvests from the garden and orchard abound it is a great time of the year in central New Mexico. At our last meeting, Carla Wackenheim presented an informative program on preparing fiber. Carla has studied this area extensively and it is currently one of her favorite areas of interest. Visitors and members alike asked well-informed questions and gained a better understanding of the fiber prep process. It was great to see our roving photographer Emily Miller again. She has been busy with work trips and visiting family. August is a month of member birthdays! Shar provided a cake for Myra that was shared by all the August birthday recipients. They included: AnnMarie Pearson, Cat O Connor, Terri Greenlee and Myra. Best wishes to all. Shar made the meeting by donating a tote full of yarns for our raffle prizes! Thank you, Shar! Show and Tell is always a popular part of our meetings. Many lovely items were shown by members. Shar is gearing up for the holidays with very lovely woven ornaments in small embroidery frames. Emily shared a quilt from her mother. Myra revealed that Carla is a competent seamstress by showing her tote bag. Mickey compared two recently woven scarves and the differences in varying warp threads. It was a fun and highly informative meeting. Other things, our long-time member, Martha Carangelo lost her beloved husband, John. She has Next meeting: September 15 meeting at the Belen Harvey House Museum. Refreshments served at 12:45; the meeting and program begin at 1:00. Shibori dye day Many cultures have some form of decorative dyeing. We will use some easy Japanese dye methods. Bring a yard of 100% cotton fabric NO BLENDS!! (muslin or something compatible) OR a 100% cotton T-shirt, rubber gloves, a few plastic bags and wear an apron or old clothes. Due to the nature of this program. The dyeing will take place outdoors. If you have a lightweight card table or folding table, please bring it. October 20 meeting at the Belen Harvey House Museum. Program: Keeping Records. Refreshments at 12:45; business meeting and program begin at 1:00. Let s share ideas on how you keep track of projects, ideas, materials and anything else. We will show you examples of what can be used for weaving, knitting and dyeing. It doesn t have to be a big fancy production it can take any shape or size, The nominating committee will take nominations for the 2019 year, moved to a care facility in Albuquerque. Before she left, she entrusted Myra and Carla with her own stash of home grown Suffolk fleece. It was Martha s request that it be given to a good home. Please come to the next meeting to share in Martha s lifelong passion her own sheep s fleece! Diana Dow suggested that we might want to hold a meeting at Martha s new place soon. Stay tuned. On a personal note, Carla and I recently presented a class in Eco Dyeing to the Las Arañas Guild. It was a lot of work collating our samples and ideas for the class. The true magic came when students work was revealed. Every single person engaged in a highly artistic and creative challenge, then came away with some beautiful samples and scarves! It was a wonderful collection of many precious teaching moments that teachers value. Keep your hands happy in colorful, cheerful fiber, Myra Upcoming Meetings: November 17 meeting at the Belen Harvey House Museum Program: Special Guild funded Dorset Buttons. Let s make some decorative buttons that can be used on our fiber work! Carla Wackenheim will lead this fun and creative program. Be prepared to work and have fun. Nominations finalized at meeting. See all kinds of fiber artists demonstrating what they love: knitting, spinning, weaving, rug hooking, embroidery, quilting and more. Hands-on table for kids to learn skills.
