September s Meeting Wednesday, September 14th @ 7:00 pm Spanish Oaks Clubhouse 2201 Spanish Oaks Drive Las Vegas, Nevada 89102 Board Meeting Wed, September 14th@ 5:30pm September s Program Strathmore Paper Co. PRESENTATION Sponsored by Desert Art Supplies Summer Challenge See page 2 for all the details Annual Potluck Bring your favorite dish to share Artist of the Month Featuring Terry Titus with his series of paintings Women Aviators Reminder Time to return the videos that you rented all summer and rent some new ones!! $5.00 each for the month nvws.org Dear Members and Friends, Welcome Back!!!!!! Your Society has already started the 2016-17 year with a great Workshop by David Lobenberg, California Vibe. Many attendees will probably enter their masterpiece {self portrait} in the summer challenge which will be judged and shown at our first meeting, Wednesday, September 14th, 700pm. I wish to thank Linda Smith for making it an enjoyable experience. There were others who pitched in to enhance our experience. When I have my feet better on the ground, I ll thank each personally. For one, Ed Hoag set up the video which was an absolute necessity. We are introducing the Artist of the Month program in September which gives us an opportunity to see our friends artistic talents. Terry Titus was chosen for September to display his Women in Aviation paintings for the inaugural showing. David Mazur has built and is providing the easels for the display. Any artist in our society who wishes to participate in future months should let me know. {atrijim@juno.com} 951-378-5479. I would to close my thoughts with the following quotation by Paul Cézanne. Right now a moment of time is fleeting by! Capture its reality in paint! To do that we must put all else out of our minds. We must become that moment, make ourselves a sensitive recording plate give the image of what we actually see, forgetting everything that has been seen before our time Jim Champlin, President September 2016 Here s your NVWS s Board of Directors for the 2016/2017 season: President - James L. NVWS Paintout Western Federation of Watercolor Societies This year s Western Federation Entries are due by November 1st, 2016. The prospectus in online now at nvws.org NVWS has opportunities for plein-air painting. Many people are intimidated by painting outside their studio but it can be a lot of fun. Our outings are local so we spend more time painting than driving to a destination. We usually paint for about 3 hours, as light changes, people move, etc. Last year we painted at Floyd Lamb Park, Red Rock Canyon, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, Springs Preserve and the wetlands. The outings are scheduled about a week in advance due to weather and other obstacles, and usually are on Mondays. I try to find locations with some shade, access to a restroom, and not crowded. - Keep your supplies manageable, something you can carry or pull over rough terrain (i.e. not a sidewalk!) - Working smaller rather than full sheet is easier outside. - Keep in mind, wind and heat, bring a hat, a chair or stool, and plenty of water. Exhibition Runs April 7 - June 20, 2017 Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Hosted by the Watercolor Society of Oregon Jeannie, McGuire, Juror Our NVWS Delegate is Elena Wherry 702-845-1241 Our Alternate Delegate is Linda Smith Email: lsmith.lv@outlook.com or call: 509-499-1156 Accolades to our NVWS Members Congratulations to John Athey!! John Athey had 4 entries in the Helldorado Days Art Show at the Elks Lodge (last spring) He won 1st in watercolor, 2nd in watercolor, 1st in pencil drawing and 1st in sculpture. He also won Best of Show (with this pencil drawing below) Look for email announcing each paint-out or watch Facebook for announcements or last minute cancellations. If you have questions about getting involved, email Sue Roach at sue51r@earthlink.net. September 2016 Nevada Watercolor Society page 4
