Page 2 Sewing Directions: 1. Trim each of the black floral 8-3/4 x 10-1/2 pieces with the Pentagon Template. 4. Sew a large floral pentagon to the purple triangle Make 4. 2. Sew one each black scroll and white damask diamonds shown. Make a total of four. 5. Sew the diamond/ pentagon units together Make 4 3. Using a set in seam as described below, sew a 9-1/2 purple solid quarter-square triangle between the diamond units. Make 4. SET IN SEAMS are needed to add pieces that require two separate seams because a straight seam will not work. Basically, a set in seam is made by sewing one side of the piece being added (in this case a triangle) to the piece it s being added to (diamonds). The fabric is then removed from under the sewing machine, the pieces are folded so the second side of the triangle to the other diamond unit. That second seam is sewn, then the piece is pressed flat. 6. Stitch two gray scroll diamonds to sides of a large floral pentagon Stitch a 9-1/2 small pink solid triangle under the pentagon. Make 4. 7. Set in two 9-1/2 purple solid quartersquare triangles
Page 3 8. Sew in the units from Step 7 9. Set in two 9-1/2 white damask quarter-square triangles along each corner of quilt center. Then add 12-5/8 black scroll half-square triangles to corners to finish the star block. Assembly: 1. Stitch five 2-1/4 pink solid strips together end-to-end. Cut strip into four equal length borders. Sew borders to right and left sides of star block quilt center. Press and trim excess. Add remaining borders to top and bottom of quilt center. Press and trim excess. 2. Make and add a border in the same border as the first border, using five 3-1/2 black damask strips. 3. Make and add a border in the same border as the first border, using six 5-1/2 black floral strips. 4. Make and add a border in the same border as the first border, using six 1-1/2 black damask strips. Finishing: 1. Sew the two lengths of backing together along selvage edges creating a two-panel wide backing. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt or tie as desired. 2. Prepare binding from seven 2-1/2" x WOF black damask strips. Sew strips together into one long binding strip. Press strip in half lengthwise. 3. Carefully trim backing and batting even with quilt top. 4. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1/4" (.64cm) and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 5. Turn binding to back of quilt and blind stitch in place.
