Between Turns Michigan Association of Woodturners Volume 19 Issue 3 A chapter of the American Association of Woodturners March 2007 President: Contact Us Tom Mogford 810-629-6176 Vice President: Pete Buccellato 248-634-7622 Treasurer: Tim Morris 810-229-7156 Secretary, Newsletter Editor: Photographer: Jeff Provost: 248-437-0203 Webmaster: Librarian: Show & Tell table from the March meeting. Meeting Announcements John Becker Up in Smoke John Becker treated the audience at the MAW March meeting with an interesting demonstration on how smoking pipes are made and constructed. John discussed the various woods used in pipe making. Woods such as fruitwoods, honey locust, and walnut are good. Woods to avoid such as softwoods and woods that are toxic like cocobolo. John also covered where to purchase the stems and that they were made of a Vulcanite material. John finished his turning of an apple wood pipe and did a fine job in covering all the ins and outs that one must know. Basic Turning Tools.Tom discussed some of the basic tools that one needs to get started in woodturning. His recommendations were to get a 1/2 bowl gouge, 3/8 spindle gouge, and a parting tool. Don t throw your money away on buying tools your not sure you need. Most turning projects can be done with a minimum of tools. Upcoming Free Turning Demonstration A discussion was held on who to have for a feature turner for the club s upcoming demonstration that will be free to paid up MAW club members. Jeff Salter from the Ann Arbor, Mi area was discussed. Jeff is a very versatile turner and is an active AAW member. To see some of Jeff s work and read his biography, go to his web site at: http://www.jeffsturnedwood.com/ Ohio Turning 07 Symposium For those interested in attending the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild semiannual Turning 2007 Symposium in October. You will find the registration form on page 4 of this newsletter. Don t delay sending it in if you are at all interested in attending. This symposium has a set number of guests and when that number is reached, registration stops. This is one of the better symposiums in the country. You won t be disappointed!

Jigs, Fixtures, and. All members are reminded to bring their favorite ideas in the way of jigs, fixtures, do-dads, and other creations that have helped them do a job, made things easier, helped with organization of the shop, or any other items of importance you would like to share with other members. This will be for the APRIL 1st MEET- ING. Our MAW members are a talented group and after visiting many of the members home shops I have had the opportunity to see some very interesting and creative devices. These devices have been everything from work holding devices to clever organizational items. We are asking that you bring the item and if possible a drawing, sketch, or plan to go along with it that might help other interested members in duplicating what has helped you so much. This will be a great sharing opportunity to see what some of the other members have come up with to help them in their pursuit of turning wood. Wishing you all the best, Steven Russell http://www.woodturningvideosplus.com Demo Tips The following are the actual responses to a question on techniques and ideas for woodturning demonstrations. Herman de Vries Pam Reilly - Mar 3, 2004 I just joined (finally) a local woodturning club last month and they want me to give a demo on making a box. All you experts out there - do you have any tips on how to do this? I've never done it before. I have a handout - basically the how-to that I posted here, but are there any special tricks or tips that would help? Thanks in advance Chris Wright - Mar 3, 2004 Pam, here are some of the things that I have learned: Find out how long the demo time window is and determine if you can turn a piece start to finish in that time. If not, prepare things ahead of time, like roughing out the blanks, spigots, etc. This way you can talk about them, but not waste time on the basics and get down to business. Talk ALOT. Make sure your audience knows what you are doing, how and why. My biggest mistake in my first demo was going through steps that I knew and understood without making sure everyone else did. Not to mention, the entire audience may not be able to see every move. If you are cutting away from them, the camera, etc. Make sure you are narrating what's going on "behind the scenes". Bring examples of your work to the demo. You usually don't have time to go through you're full finishing processes, so this way they can see the final product. Also, some turners enjoy your work so much that they may want to purchase something. Not common for us newer folks, but you never know. Find out what kind of lathe you'll be working on and make adjustments accordingly. Example, if you do a lot of work on a chuck, but your chuck won't fit their lathe and they don't have a chuck, you'll have to determine how to mount and such. Sharpen all the tools you plan to use the night before. Not having to grind during a demo makes it go faster and cuts down on the noise level (especially for videos). Pass things around as you finish them. If you turn one part first and don't need it for the second part for a few minutes, pass it around while you turn the second part. This will give the audience a chance to physically process what you have just done and it will stick in their minds a bit better. Last but not least, be prepared for questions, comments and jests. Being new to the club, you might not get as many hecklers, but in my lively group, there is inevitably someone who has to poke fun at something. Heck, even Michael Hosaluk got a few jests thrown his way when he demo'd last weekend. Hope this helps. Chris 3
