Page 4 Volume 24 Issue 6 GREETINGS FROM FLORIDA Hello fellow artists of CKAG! A little news from Florida. Last month, Carol Reesor and I found a group of plein air artists, The Peace River Painters, to join up with. They meet every Monday at some predetermined location. The first time Carol and I joined them (Feb 21) was on a backroad, weathered horse farm. There was a small Peace River Painters sign on the main road alerting us to turn down a long, well worn, sandy driveway. It looked like a place we would not venture into by ourselves. As we drove around what looked like a vacant house with old cars and trailers, there in front of us were about 30 cars parked under old live oak trees. There were artists and easels set up everywhere you looked. We took out our cameras and walked among them introducing ourselves while taking photos of the surrounding buildings and landscape. The group was quiet welcoming so we grabbed our paint boxes and joined in. Most of the artists quit painting at lunchtime and everyone gathered around picnic tables to show their oils, pastels and watercolors, One man, Robert, who had finished three 16x20 canvas boards that morning, seemed in charge of critiquing and went through the pieces on display, giving comments. Carol and I enjoyed it so much that we joined them again on March 3 at a working marina in Punta Gorda. We asked what was required to officially join the group, and they said just show up and paint! No dues, no business meeting, just come, paint and have fun!!! They have shows of their plein air work periodically at various galleries and/or art centers in our area. With more practice, maybe we will join some of their exhibits. See everyone when I return to Kentucky! Theresa Shelton Marina plein air 10x8. Wind started blowing that day, so I had to quickly get paint on the canvas. And the subject was so complicated, I didn t get finished. But looking at it after returning home, I kind of liked the loose sketchy-ness. May try this approach on purpose next time. My plein air painting from farm driveway- oil, 6x8 Carol, taking photos at marina.
