INT. PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE - MORNING sits at the desk of Principal THOMAS with her head down. Martha enters and takes a seat. Well, I called your mother. She will be here in a few minutes. You called my mother? Yes. We have to discuss your suspension. She answered the phone? Of course. Why, is she in the habit of not answering her phone? It s not even noon. I m surprised she s awake. Does she usually sleep in late? She works at night. I see. Martha looks into a file folder. It says here, she is a bartender and part time actress. A single mom. Okay. (beat) She must work the late shift? Yeah, usually. Aren t you concerned about being suspended? Yeah, I guess.
Andrea s mother,, enters the office. Martha stands and shakes Beth s hand and they both sit. Mrs. Walker. Thank you for coming down. What s going on? Are you hurt, baby? Andrea is fine, however, Tommy Carson has a black eye. A black eye? What did you do, Andrea? I was just defending myself. Oh my god... (to Martha) I never thought Andrea would be someone to get bullied, but I ve always taught her not to take crap from anyone. I understand, but Tommy never laid a hand on her. They just had words. Is that true, honey? He was saying things. The story I got from the other kids is that Tommy was making fun of her by calling you names. Me? Like what? It s not that important. It was just to push Andrea s buttons.
Well, can I at least get an idea of what he was saying? He was saying you were a stripper, a hooker...you know. Stuff little boys say. What s his name? Tommy Carson. Carson...Carson...His father is Anthony Carson, right? Yes. The councilman of our district. Of course. His parents are getting a divorce. Yes, I imagine Tommy is going through some issues. What s going to happen to my daughter? I m really sorry, Mrs. Walker, but we have a strict policy on any kind of violent behavior, we have to suspend Andrea for two days. Two days? That s the minimum. Huh. Well, what s Tommy s punishment? He will also be suspended for two days.
Okay. I guess I should have a word with Mr. Carson. Make sure...this doesn t happen again. Would you like me to call him for you? Beth and Andrea both get up and head for the door. They exit. No, I have his number. Okay, sweetheart. I m going to take you home. I m really sorry, mom. No, honey, don t apologize. I ll take care of everything. CUT TO:
