Solid Red Fabric: Cut (2) 1.5 x 10.5 rectangles (for inner border) Cut (2) 1.5 x 14.5 rectangles (for inner border) Solid Green Fabric: Cut (1) 1.5 x 13 rectangle (for 4 patch units) Cut (2) 2.25 x width of fabric strips (for binding) Christmas Stripe Print Fabric: Cut (2) 2.5 x 12.5 rectangles (for outer border) *SPECIAL NOTE #2: Be sure to cut your stipes in the right direction. Double check the direction of the stripes with the final pattern layout before you cut your fabric! Make the Candy Cane Corners Step 1: Take one 1.0 inch white square and place it wrong side up on your work surface. Step 2: Using a thin pencil, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the fabric. Step 3: Place a 1.0 inch square on the upper left corner of a striped 1.5 inch square and sew along the diagonal line. Step 4: Trim the block ¼ inch from the line you just sewed and press the seam toward the striped fabric. Make two of these squares. Step 5: Take one 1.0 inch white square and place it wrong side up on your work surface. Step 6: Using a thin pencil, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the fabric. Step 7: Place a 1.0 inch square on the upper right corner of a striped 1.5 inch square and sew along the diagonal line. Step 8: Trim the block ¼ inch from the line you just sewed and press the seam toward the striped fabric. Make two of these squares. Make the Four Patch Units Step 1: Sew the 1.5 x 13 inch green rectangle to the 1.5 x 13 inch white rectangle. Press seam toward the green fabric. Step 2: Sub-cut the green and white unit from Step 1 into eight 1.5 inch units as detailed in the diagram below. 3
Make the Four Patch Units (cont d) Step 3: Make four 4 patch units as detailed in the diagram on the right. Step 3: Lay out the four 4 patch units as detailed in the diagram below. Sew the four 4 patch units together and press seams open. Make the Candy Canes Step 1: Lay out the candy cane corners, the 1.5 inch squares and the rectangles in rows according to the diagram below. Sew the squares and rectangles together row by row according to the diagram and press seams open. 4
Make the Candy Canes (cont d) Candy Cane 2.0 Placemat Step 2: Sew the three rows together for the candy cane that faces left. Next sew the three rows together for the candy cane that faces right. Press seams open. You now have two candy canes! One faces left and one faces right. Step 3: Sew a 1.5 x 8.5 inch white rectangle to the left side and to the right side of each candy cane. Press seams open. 5
. Make the Placemat Step 1: Referring to the diagram below, sew the candy cane that faces left to the left side of the four patch unit. Sew the candy ca n that faces right to the right side of the four patch unit. Press seams open. Step 2: Sew one 1.5 x 12.5 inch rectangle to the top of the candy cane unit and sew one to the bottom of the candy cane unit. Press seams open. Step 3: Sew a 1.5 x 10.5 inch solid red rectangle to the left side and to the right side of the candy cane unit. Press seams toward the red fabric. Next sew a 1.5 x 14.5 inch rectangle to the top and to the bottom of the candy cane unit. Press seams toward the red fabric. 6
Make the Placemat (cont d) Step 4: Sew a 2.5 x 12.5 inch Christmas stripe print rectangle to the left side and to the right side of the candy cane unit. Press seams toward the striped fabric. Next sew a 2.5 x 18.5 inch Christmas stripe print rectangle to the top and to the bottom of the candy cane unit. Press seams toward the striped fabric. **Tip** Note the direction of the stripes in your placemat before cutting your fabric. I wanted all my stripes to go from left to right...so I measured twice (maybe three times) and cut once! Step 5: Quilt the placemat using your favorite quilting method. Step 6: Piece the 2.25 inch binding strips together and attach to your placemat using your favorite binding method.
