Thanks again to Ron Z. for donating prizes that are specifically to be given to Junior members. Program The program for the month was U.S. Five Cent Pieces by club member John B. John started with a bit of history on coinage used in the US before the US mint started minting coins. He then worked his way through the history of the 5 cent coins that were used, indicating when they were introduced, what they were made of, and varieties that were created in the various issues. After the presentation he had a quiz on the material he presented and gave out some great prizes to members who answered the questions correctly. Requests If you have pictures of coins that you would like to see in the Coin Chatter under the Coin Picture of the Month, please email them to your Secretary. I would prefer jpeg files that are 40k or less in size with a white background. If you would like to write an article on a coin subject that interests you, and you think other members would be interested in that subject also, send it to your Secretary and it can be published in the Coin Chatter. The NSCC needs programs! If you have a program idea or know of someone who can do a program at an upcoming NSCC meeting, contact the NSCC President or Secretary. The President or Secretary can be contacted at info@northsidecoinclub.org President s Notes Northside Coin Club Meeting July 12 th, 2016 No news items from the Coin Show Podcast for the next few months. Mike and Matt have taken the summer off from doing their podcast which means I will have to come up with my own news items for a while. Not a problem this month as I have much to talk about from two weeks at the ANA s summer seminar last month. The first week of summer seminar I took Introduction to Numismatic Digital Photography. The instructors were Tom Mulvaney, Clark Fogg, and David Heinrich. The course covered the photography techniques I expected it would and told me what I expected to hear: I need a new camera and a macro lens to take the kinds of pictures I would like to take of my coins. The highlight of the course was taking pictures of Indian Cents that a student from Steve Roach s Numismatic Publishing course was going to use for a book. 3

I attended the following Bull Sessions (free hour long sessions on a wide variety of numismatic topics) during week 1: 1) Bob Bair The Romanticizing of the American Indian on U.S. Coin and Currency Designs from the 19th Century to the Present Day 2) John Kraljevich Cataloging Pogue 3) Keith Grove Polymer Bank Notes of the World 4) Joseph E. Boling The Cheshire Faker 5) Don Bonser So you Want to be a Coin Dealer The second week of summer seminar I took Grading United States Coins, Part I. The instructors were Mike Faraone (current PCGS grader) and Kyle Knapp (former PCGS grader). The morning of the first day was lecture but virtually the entire rest of the class was grading mostly U.S. coins. We were initially given 60 seconds to grade a coin and we compared our grade with the instructor s grade and that was compared with the slab s grade. As the course went on, we were given 50 seconds to grade a coin and eventually 40 seconds was all the time we had to grade a coin. The third day of the class, we did consensus grading. We broke into groups of 3 or 4 students where we each graded slabbed coins with the actual grade hidden. One person was selected to be the finalizer and that person decided on a consensus grade for the coin. I was the finalizer for the our 4-person group for the last two days of the course. I learned a lot about coin grading and only have minor complaints on how the course could have been taught better. The most awesome coin I saw was a 1900 Barber Quarter graded PF68. I attended the following Bull Sessions (free hour long sessions on a wide variety of numismatic topics) during week 1: 1) Bob Campbell Conservation of coins 301 2) Mitch Ernst My Obsession with the Sower: Coins, Medals, and Miscellanea 3) Pam Stitely Vampire Notes 4) John Baumgart, Mike Fey, and Isaac Wallie Everything you wanted to know about VAMS I attended a Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee meeting that was held on Monday night of the second week. I enjoyed seeing the process of the committee deciding on its recommendations for the 2018 America the Beautiful (ATB) Quarters and the Barack Obama first and second term Presidential Medals. I was really tickled to see that there were three coins with turtles on them for the Cumberland Island candidate designs. It was also great to see that the overwhelming favorite coin design of the committee was the GA-03 turtle design for the Cumberland Island ATB Quarter. Bob Carr President, Northside Coin 4
